Possibly—but the evidence does not show that skipping breakfast causes stress. A 2022 meta-analysis found that people who reported skipping breakfast also reported stress more often, while a small cortisol study found altered hormone patterns in habitual breakfast skippers without a difference in self-reported chronic stress. Those findings describe associations and physiological responses, not proof that eating breakfast prevents stress or that missing it will make everyone feel worse.
Your own response can still matter. Delaying food may coincide with hunger, lower energy, irritability or difficulty concentrating for some people, while others feel fine or prefer a later first meal. The practical question is whether your eating schedule supports your energy, mood and overall nutrition—not whether breakfast is a universal stress treatment.
What the strongest evidence says
The clearest numerical estimate comes from a systematic review and meta-analysis by Zahedi and colleagues, published in Nutrition Neuroscience in 2022 (published online in 2020). It combined 14 observational studies involving 399,550 people from ages 6 through 65 and older. Breakfast skippers had higher odds of reporting stress than breakfast eaters: pooled odds ratio 1.23, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.04 to 1.43. The full paper is available through PubMed.
An odds ratio of 1.23 means the groups differed in their reported stress, not that skipping breakfast raises an individual’s stress by exactly 23%. Because the underlying studies were observational, participants chose—or already had—a breakfast pattern. Factors such as work or school schedules, sleep, income, health, mental-health symptoms, smoking, activity and total diet could influence both breakfast habits and stress. The review therefore cannot establish which came first.

The same meta-analysis reported associations between breakfast skipping and depression (pooled odds ratio 1.39, 95% confidence interval 1.34–1.44) and psychological distress (1.55, 95% confidence interval 1.47–1.62). These figures should not be read as proof that missing breakfast causes depression, anxiety or another mental-health condition. They are group-level associations from mostly observational evidence.
What the human studies measured
| Study | Design and participants | Main finding | What it can—and cannot—tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zahedi et al., 2022 | Systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 observational studies; 399,550 people, ages 6 to 65 or older | Breakfast skipping was associated with higher odds of reported stress (1.23; 95% CI 1.04–1.43) | Shows a population association. It does not prove that changing breakfast timing changes stress. |
| Witbracht et al., 2015 | Small cross-sectional study: 30 habitual skippers and 35 breakfast eaters; women ages 18–45 | Skippers had higher cortisol during some measurement periods and a flatter day-to-day cortisol pattern; self-reported chronic stress did not differ | Suggests a difference in cortisol regulation in this restricted sample, not that participants felt more stressed or that the result applies to everyone. |
| Widaman et al., 2016 | Cross-sectional Sacramento-area study: 40 breakfast eaters and 35 skippers; women ages 18–45 | Breakfast eaters scored higher on several diet-quality measures. Among skippers, reported stress was related to some evening food-choice measures. | Shows relationships among stress, diet and eating patterns, but cannot identify a cause or direction. |
| Smith, 2002 | Older study of daily breakfast cereal consumption and cortisol | Cereal consumption was associated with lower cortisol; the authors said alternative explanations could not be ruled out. | Older, limited evidence—not a recommendation to eat cereal or evidence that cereal treats stress. |
Cortisol is not the same as feeling stressed
Cortisol is a hormone involved in the body’s daily rhythm and response to demands. Researchers can measure it in samples taken at particular times, then examine the pattern across the day. A change in cortisol timing or amplitude is a physiological observation; it is not a direct report of worry, tension or emotional overload.
In the Witbracht study, the authors reported higher cortisol during some periods and a blunted diurnal cortisol amplitude among habitual skippers. However, the groups did not differ in their questionnaire ratings of chronic stress. The authors’ exact conclusion was: “Self-reports of chronic stress did not differ between the groups.” Read the study details at PubMed.

This distinction matters because a hormone pattern cannot tell you by itself whether a person felt distressed, coped well, slept poorly or experienced an acute stressful event. It also prevents a common mistake: treating any cortisol difference as proof that breakfast would make someone calmer.
Why skipping breakfast might feel different for some people
The available studies do not test a breakfast intervention, so they cannot identify a proven mechanism. Still, people can notice real short-term differences when they delay eating. Hunger may make it harder to focus, and some people report feeling irritable, tired or less steady until they eat. Others experience no such effect and function comfortably with a later first meal.
Your morning routine may also be a marker for other conditions. An early work shift, caregiving, inadequate sleep, financial pressure, medication timing or an irregular schedule can affect both whether you eat and how stressed you feel. In that situation, breakfast is one visible part of a larger pattern rather than the sole cause.

Diet quality is another potential link. In the Widaman study, breakfast eaters had higher scores on several measures of overall diet quality. That does not show that breakfast itself improved the diet; people who choose breakfast may differ in many other ways. Nor does it identify a particular food that protects against stress.
What the evidence does not establish
- It does not show that everyone needs breakfast every day.
- It does not prove that skipping breakfast causes stress, depression, anxiety or psychological distress.
- It does not show that a specific breakfast food, cereal or meal plan treats stress.
- It does not show that adding breakfast will lower your cortisol or improve your mental health.
- It does not establish effects in every age group, sex, medical condition or eating schedule.
The American Heart Association’s 2017 scientific statement on meal timing reviewed cardiometabolic outcomes, not breakfast as a stress treatment. It described the breakfast evidence as limited and called for longer-term studies. That statement is available at the American Heart Association scientific statement.
How to test whether your routine affects you
If you are unsure whether skipping breakfast contributes to your own morning stress, use a simple, nonjudgmental observation period rather than assuming the answer.

- Record your baseline for several days. Note wake time, first food or drink, sleep duration, perceived stress from 0 to 10, hunger, energy, concentration and any major stressor. Include caffeine and medications when relevant.
- Keep the rest of the routine as stable as practical. Changing sleep, caffeine, exercise and meal size at the same time makes the result impossible to interpret.
- Try a modest morning meal on comparable days. Choose an amount and timing that fit your schedule. The goal is to observe your response, not to follow a prescribed “stress breakfast.”
- Compare patterns, not a single morning. Look for repeated differences in hunger, energy, mood and concentration across at least several comparable days. A busy deadline or a poor night of sleep can outweigh any meal effect.
- Keep the routine that is sustainable and nutritionally adequate. If eating early leaves you uncomfortable or causes you to skip later meals, a later first meal may suit you better. If skipping makes you shaky, irritable or unable to concentrate, eating earlier may be practical.
This self-observation cannot diagnose a medical problem or prove causation. It simply helps you identify a routine that works for your body and schedule.

| Situation | Practical option | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| You feel hungry, distracted or irritable before lunch | Try a convenient meal or snack earlier in the day and observe whether symptoms settle | Energy, concentration, hunger and mood over several comparable days |
| You are not hungry in the morning and feel well | A later first meal can be reasonable if your overall diet is balanced and your schedule supports it | Total food intake, afternoon fatigue, evening overeating and ability to meet nutritional needs |
| Early eating causes nausea or discomfort | Discuss timing, portions and possible causes with a clinician; do not force a large meal | Persistent nausea, pain, reflux, unintended weight change or medication-related symptoms |
| You have diabetes, take glucose-affecting medicines, are pregnant, or have a history of an eating disorder | Get individualized advice before deliberately changing meal timing | Symptoms and any measurements your clinician has asked you to track |
A balanced eating pattern matters more than a breakfast label. If you eat in the morning, select foods you tolerate and can maintain; if you do not, make sure later meals reliably provide enough energy and nutrients. There is no evidence in these studies that one product or menu prevents stress.

Also arrange medical advice for repeated dizziness, fainting, confusion, vomiting, severe weakness, unexplained weight change or symptoms that occur whenever you delay food. These signs can have causes unrelated to breakfast timing. People using insulin or other glucose-lowering medicines should follow their prescriber’s instructions rather than experimenting with skipped meals.
A clear way to interpret headlines about breakfast and stress
When you see a claim that breakfast “reduces stress,” check four details: Was the study observational or an intervention? Did it measure perceived stress, cortisol or both? Who participated? Was the result a single association or a repeated change after people altered their routine?
For this question, the answers are mixed: the largest evidence synthesis is observational; the small cortisol study measured a hormone and found no difference in reported chronic stress; and the diet-quality study cannot establish cause and effect. The responsible conclusion is therefore conditional: skipping breakfast may coincide with feeling worse for some individuals, but current evidence does not show that it generally causes stress or that breakfast is a treatment.
