Yes. In a 2014 laboratory study, researchers designed seven-residue peptides that assembled into fibrils and showed zinc-dependent esterase activity. The result demonstrated catalytic behavior in a short peptide assembly—not a ready-to-use catalyst or a replacement for enzymes.
What did the 2014 study demonstrate?
The researchers designed peptides seven amino acids long to test whether short, amyloid-forming sequences could support enzyme-like catalysis. The assembled fibrils catalyzed acyl ester hydrolysis, a reaction in which water breaks an ester bond.
In this system, Zn2+ had two roles: it helped stabilize fibril formation and acted as a cofactor in the hydrolysis reaction. The assembly and the metal therefore contributed to the observed behavior; the finding was not simply that an isolated peptide acted like a conventional enzyme.

The authors summarized the result this way: “These results indicate that prion-like fibrils are able to not only catalyse their own formation, but they can also catalyse chemical reactions.” The article appeared in Nature Chemistry on 16 March 2014: Nature Chemistry study.

What does “enzyme-like” mean here?
It refers narrowly to the ability of the assembled peptides to catalyze a chemical reaction under the reported assay conditions. The study supports a laboratory demonstration of catalytic function in a self-assembled peptide material. It does not establish that the fibrils match enzymes in overall performance, work across many reactions, or are suitable for commercial or consumer use.
The authors discussed the possibility of designing self-assembling nanostructured catalysts. That is a prospective implication of the result, not evidence that such catalysts have been deployed.

How does this fit with other peptide-catalyst research?
“Peptide catalyst” describes a broad research area, not one material or mechanism. Studies vary in peptide backbone and length, cofactors, assembly architecture, and the chemical reaction being tested. The examples below are distinct from the 2014 zinc-dependent esterase system.

A 2018 review surveys catalytic peptide assemblies, including natural and unnatural peptide backbones and systems involving metal-containing cofactors: Chemical Society Reviews. The 2024 hydrosilane study concerns a different reaction and is not a replication of the 2014 esterase result: 2024 peptide-catalysis paper.

What is—and is not—established?
- Established: a designed seven-residue peptide system formed fibrils with Zn2+-dependent catalytic activity in a model ester-hydrolysis reaction.
- Not established by this result: a consumer product, industrial readiness, broad enzyme replacement, or a general-purpose catalyst.
- Keep comparisons specific: other peptide catalyst studies use different designs, cofactors, structures, and reactions, so their findings cannot be treated as direct performance comparisons with the 2014 fibrils.
