On supported Samsung Galaxy devices, Gallery’s Photo Assist or Generative Edit can alter selected objects and generate changes around them. To try it, open a photo in Gallery, tap Edit, choose the available AI editing control, select an object, make the edit, tap Generate, then save the result as a copy. Samsung’s documented steps do not establish a universal control for replacing an entire photo background with a chosen image or solid color.
Use Photo Assist or Generative Edit to change a photo

Open Gallery and select the photo you want to edit.

Tap Edit (the pencil icon), then look for Photo Assist (the stars icon) or Generative Edit. The label and location can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s US guide and Samsung’s Canada guide describe the feature.

Select or outline the object you want to change. Use the controls available on your device to add, move, remove, or resize it. Samsung says the AI can adjust an object and its background to match the photo; tap Generate to process the edit.

Review the result and tap Save as copy or Save copy. This preserves the original separately from the edited image.
This workflow is useful for repositioning an object or generating changes in image areas around it. It should not be mistaken for a guaranteed full-background replacement tool: Samsung’s documentation does not promise that every Galaxy has a command to place a chosen picture or flat color behind a subject.

Remove an unwanted object and fill the area
If you only need to remove a distraction, use Object Eraser when it is available on your device. In Gallery, select the photo, tap Intelligence features (three stars), choose Object eraser, tap or draw around the unwanted object, and tap Erase. Save the edited image when you are satisfied. Object Eraser fills the area left by the removed item; it is not a general tool for replacing the entire background. Availability varies by model. Samsung’s instructions cover the editing tools.

Check whether your Galaxy supports the feature
Photo editing features and eligibility differ by tool, device, region, and software version. Samsung’s US Galaxy AI overview describes Photo Assist on selected phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, and says an internet connection is required. Samsung’s Galaxy AI overview gives that scope; it is not a compatibility guarantee for every Gallery edit.

Samsung’s Canada guide describes its Photo Assist tools for Galaxy devices running One UI 8 and says a Samsung account is required. It also notes that screens and settings can vary by provider, software version, and model. Check the instructions for your region and device rather than assuming one system requirement applies to every feature or market. Samsung Canada’s guide
For Photo Assist, Samsung’s US support guide also specifies that Generative Edit output is resized up to 12MP and AI-generated images display a Galaxy AI watermark. If those limits matter for your use, review the saved copy before using it elsewhere. Samsung US support

Choose the right Gallery option for the result you want

Before editing, consider whether your phone supports the relevant tool, whether an account or internet connection is required for that feature, whether a generated result and its watermark are acceptable, and whether saving a separate copy suits your workflow.
