There is no public evidence that robot submarines can reliably evade next-generation sonar. What the evidence does show is a developing contest: navies are investing in autonomous underwater vehicles and distributed sensing, while researchers work to improve sonar detection and classification. The outcome depends on the sensor, the vehicle, the seabed and the mission—not on a simple contest between an invisible sub and a powerful sonar.
What does it mean to “outwit” sonar?
Sonar is not one device with one ability. Active sonar sends sound and interprets returning echoes; passive sonar listens for sound from other sources. Different systems are built for different tasks, and their effectiveness depends on such factors as frequency, sensor placement, target characteristics and the surrounding water and seabed.
That distinction matters because public examples of unmanned systems using sonar do not necessarily involve submarines trying to hide from it. In mine countermeasures, for instance, an autonomous vehicle may carry sonar to map the seafloor or locate objects. That is a different problem from detecting an underwater vehicle that is trying to avoid detection.

Sonar can be used to search for underwater objects, but public sources do not establish a reliable detection range for any of the named vehicles in the programs discussed here. Nor do they provide comparable acoustic signatures or controlled tests showing how a specific robot submarine fares against a specific advanced sonar.

Detection and classification are also different tasks. A system may register an object or return without being able to identify it confidently. NATO’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), in a 2023 report focused on mine-countermeasure research, describes how complex seabed environments can reduce detection and classification performance, particularly for buried or partly buried objects. That finding is specific to the report’s mine-warfare context; it should not be treated as a universal result for submarine detection.
The report also says that commercial short-range, high-resolution multibeam imaging sonar can provide sub-centimetre resolution in some configurations. That is a conditional resolution figure—not a claim about how far sonar can detect a submarine.

How might an underwater drone complicate detection?
Autonomy can change how an area is monitored without making a vehicle acoustically invisible. Multiple unmanned platforms could distribute sensors, remain on task for extended periods or share information with other assets. NATO’s 2023 CMRE report discusses heterogeneous autonomous assets using active and/or passive sensors to detect and localize targets. NATO Allied Command Transformation’s 2025 Task Force X announcement describes integrating autonomous systems with existing forces and fusing data.

They may make it harder for an adversary to understand what is being watched and where, but the cited public material does not demonstrate that autonomy defeats sonar or guarantees a vehicle will go undetected.

Underwater communications are another constraint. The U.S. Department of Defense reported that the 2024 AUKUS Autonomous Warrior exercise tested software-defined acoustic modems alongside autonomous underwater and surface vessels. The test is evidence of experimentation and interoperability work; it does not establish particular communication ranges, latency or combat readiness.
What do the announced programs actually demonstrate?
The examples below span different vehicle types, missions and levels of evidence. A prototype agreement, research report or successful exercise is not the same as a declaration that a system is fielded and performing its intended mission.

| Program or example | Mission or focus | What the public source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Navy/DIU large-displacement unmanned underwater vehicle (LDUUV) prototypes | Long-endurance underwater sensing and payload delivery for undersea and seabed warfare | On 8 February 2024, the Defense Innovation Unit announced prototype agreements with Oceaneering International, Kongsberg Discovery and Anduril Industries. The announcement described live demonstrations beginning in 2024; it does not establish routine operational service. |
| DARPA ACTUV | An unmanned surface vessel concept intended to track quiet diesel-electric submarines using non-conventional sensors | DARPA describes a completed program that aimed to demonstrate long-range autonomy, safe navigation and continuous tracking under sparse remote supervision. A stated program goal is not proof of persistent operational tracking. |
| NATO Task Force X | Persistent maritime surveillance, threat tracking and improved awareness, initially focused on the Baltic | NATO Allied Command Transformation’s 31 January 2025 article announced the initiative and described plans, including a planned mid-February test. The announcement alone does not confirm the test’s outcome or later operational status. |
| AUKUS Autonomous Warrior 24 | Experimentation with networked autonomous maritime systems | The U.S. Department of Defense reported successful testing during a three-week maritime experimentation in Australia in October 2024, including acoustic modems and autonomous underwater and surface vessels. This demonstrates exercise activity, not that every system is operational. |
| Orca extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle (XLUUV) | An extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle | In December 2024, the Navy said delivery of XLE-1 was expected in early 2025, with follow-on testing through the third quarter of fiscal year 2025. Those were forecasts at the time; the cited information does not confirm whether the milestones were completed. |
| AN/AQS-20 mine-countermeasure system | Mine hunting and identification | NAVSEA describes a system with forward-looking, side-looking synthetic-aperture and digital gap-fill sonar, integrated in an unmanned mine-countermeasure package. It illustrates an unmanned system using sonar for a defined task, not a robot submarine defeating anti-submarine sonar. |
Why sonar researchers are working on new approaches
CMRE’s 2023 report discusses research into ultra-wideband synthetic-aperture sonar, low-frequency approaches and AI-based target recognition. These approaches address limitations in sensing or interpretation; they do not make detection certain. In the report’s mine-countermeasure setting, the seabed itself can make objects harder to detect and classify.

AI-based recognition is not a guarantee that a sonar return will be correctly identified. Its output depends on the data and conditions available to the system, and the cited material does not show that AI reliably solves detection problems across different underwater missions.

What the “arms race” claim gets right—and what it doesn’t
There is a real strategic competition in the sense that navies are exploring autonomous platforms, wider-area sensing, improved classification and ways to connect information from multiple assets. Uncrewed systems may also reduce the need to put people on some missions. But the public evidence supports investment, research, prototypes and trials—not a conclusion that robot submarines now beat advanced sonar.
Assessing a specific system would require details that public sources do not supply here: its acoustic signature, the detection performance of a specified sonar against it, test conditions and results, and the vehicle’s operational status. Without those details, ranking vehicles by stealth, survivability or detection range would be speculation.
