Yes, but only conditionally. Retraining can improve a worker’s prospects when it leads to skills that employers in a specific target occupation and local labour market actually need, and when it includes a recognized credential, practical experience, and credible hiring support. The available evidence does not show that taking a course by itself reliably produces stable employment for people whose jobs were displaced by artificial intelligence (AI).
Before choosing a program, establish whether your work has actually disappeared, identify realistic occupations with current vacancies, and demand independently measured evidence on placement, retention, and earnings. AI exposure, changing tasks, and confirmed job loss are different events, so the right response may be targeted upskilling, an occupational move, or support to improve the existing job rather than a wholesale career reset.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
AI exposure is not the same as a job disappearing
The International Labour Organization’s 2025 assessment measures potential generative-AI exposure at the task and occupation level. A role may contain tasks that AI can assist with while the occupation continues, changes, or gains new responsibilities. Exposure is therefore a signal to examine work, not a count of people who will become unemployed.

An ILO empirical review published on 1 June 2026 found that large-scale displacement remains limited in the evidence reviewed, while warning about inequality, younger workers’ employment opportunities, and job quality. Its summary states: “Large-scale job displacement remains limited, and worker-reported time savings of a few per cent of working hours have not yet translated into higher measured output, earnings or employment.” This describes the evidence available at that date; it does not rule out future losses or guarantee that an individual job is safe.

Forecasts describe labour-market change, not individual outcomes
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 is based on employer expectations across the global economy. It projected disruption to 22% of jobs by 2030, with 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced, for a projected net increase of 78 million. Those figures are projections, not observed counts, are not an AI-only forecast, and do not estimate whether a particular displaced worker will obtain permanent employment after training.
| Figure | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 170 million jobs by 2030 | Employer-survey projection of jobs created globally | A vacancy in your country or a job available to a retrained worker |
| 92 million jobs by 2030 | Employer-survey projection of jobs displaced globally | Observed AI-caused unemployment |
| 78 million net jobs by 2030 | Difference between the two projected totals | A probability of stable work for any individual |
| 22% disrupted by 2030 | Projected global job disruption in the report’s framing | A direct estimate of AI-related job loss in a specific occupation or region |
No source reviewed provides a single causal probability that a worker displaced specifically by AI will gain long-term stable employment after retraining. That evidence gap matters when a provider promises a guaranteed career change.
When retraining is most likely to help
It targets a real occupation, not a fashionable subject
OECD analysis of online vacancies across ten OECD countries found that AI-exposed occupations are changing their mix of required skills. Management and business skills remain important, alongside broader social, cognitive, and digital capabilities. Most workers exposed to AI are unlikely to need specialist AI-development skills. A course in machine learning is therefore not a default answer for an accountant, designer, technician, or customer-service worker.
Use current vacancies in the place where you intend to work to select a target occupation. Record the recurring requirements employers state, such as software proficiency, regulatory knowledge, communication, project experience, or a licence. A skill that is valuable in one region or occupation may not lead to an opening elsewhere.
It closes a specific, verifiable skills gap
Compare your existing tasks and achievements with several recent vacancy descriptions. Separate skills you already have from those that are genuinely missing. You may need a short credential, a portfolio, supervised practice, or knowledge of a sector’s regulations rather than a multi-year program. Ask employers or professional bodies whether the proposed credential is recognized during screening and promotion.

It connects learning to hiring
Training is more useful when it includes employer projects, work-based learning, interviews, apprenticeships, or a documented referral process. A completion certificate or enrollment total is not evidence of durable placement. The provider should identify how outcomes are measured, the time period covered, and whether results include people with backgrounds similar to yours.
A practical retraining process
1. Establish what changed in your job
- List the tasks affected. Identify work removed, reduced, or reorganized by an AI system, and work that still requires judgement, accountability, physical presence, relationship management, or domain expertise.
- Check the employment reality. Review whether your employer is eliminating the role, reducing headcount, or redesigning it. If the job remains, targeted upskilling or a negotiated transition may be faster than leaving the occupation.
- Document transferable evidence. Save work samples where permitted, quantify results, and record tools, processes, customers, compliance duties, and decisions you handled.
2. Choose one or two target occupations
Search recent vacancies in your commuting area or the remote markets you can legally work in. Look for repeated openings, stated pay ranges where available, entry requirements, shift patterns, and experience expectations. Speak with hiring managers, unions, professional associations, or public employment services. Treat a broad label such as “technology jobs” as insufficient; choose a defined occupation with identifiable employers.

Create a simple matrix with four columns: vacancy requirement, evidence you already possess, evidence missing, and the shortest credible way to demonstrate it. Include non-course options such as a supervised project, an industry examination, or an internal transfer. This prevents you from buying content that does not alter your eligibility.
4. Compare programs using outcomes, not marketing
Request written answers about the program’s participants, completion support, employer relationships, and measured results. Check whether the published figures concern enrollment, completion, first job, retention after six or twelve months, or earnings. These are different outcomes and should not be presented as interchangeable.
5. Test demand while you train
Apply for suitable roles, request informational interviews, and show an early portfolio or work sample. Repeated employer feedback can reveal that the target occupation requires a different credential or level of experience. Adjust before committing additional time and money.

6. Finish with evidence an employer can verify
Keep the credential, assessment results, project documentation, supervisor references, and a concise explanation of how your previous experience transfers. Demonstrated competence is more persuasive than a course title alone.
7. Measure the transition honestly
Track applications, interviews, offers, starting pay, hours, contract status, and retention at six and twelve months. If the program or public agency claims success, ask whether it follows participants long enough to distinguish a temporary placement from stable work.
How to evaluate a training program
| Question | Evidence to request | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Does it fit local demand? | Recent vacancy analysis, named occupational outcomes, and employer validation for your region | Only national or global growth headlines, with no local hiring evidence |
| Is the credential recognized? | Recognition by employers, regulators, or a relevant professional body | A proprietary badge that recruiters do not know |
| Do participants get jobs? | Placement rate, denominator, measurement date, occupation, and comparison group | Testimonials or a percentage with no definition of placement |
| Do jobs last? | Retention at six or twelve months, hours, contract type, and earnings | Counting any first paycheck as a successful outcome |
| Who is included? | Results by prior occupation, experience, age, location, and employment status | Results from a selectively admitted group presented as typical |
| Can you complete it? | Total cost, schedule, accessibility, childcare or travel support, tutoring, and withdrawal terms | Intensive unpaid hours or hidden assessment and equipment costs |
| Does it connect to employers? | Work-based learning, interviews, employer projects, and named support after graduation | Promises to introduce employers without describing the process |
Marketing claims, enrollment numbers, completion rates, and projected job growth can indicate reach or interest, but none proves durable placement. If independently measured placement, retention, and earnings data are unavailable, record that limitation before enrolling.
Why access and support determine results
OECD work on training supply for the green and AI transitions reports that workers most exposed to displacement may also be among the least likely to access training. Cost is only one barrier. Irregular schedules, caring responsibilities, disability access, location, digital connectivity, language, and the risk of losing income while studying can determine completion.
- Prefer schedules that match your available hours and state the full time commitment.
- Check whether learning materials, assessments, and support are accessible on your devices and in your language.
- Ask about tutoring, mentoring, disability accommodations, and help finding work after completion.
- Calculate lost earnings, travel, equipment, examination fees, and debt—not just the advertised tuition.
- Use public employment services, unions, or employer transition funds where eligibility allows, and verify their outcome measures as carefully as private providers’.
OECD also reports that evidence on whether existing training supply delivers the skills needed for AI transitions remains limited. Availability of a course should therefore not be confused with proof that it works.

Training inside the workplace
Retraining does not always require leaving your employer. The OECD Skills Outlook 2025 associates negotiated AI adoption, worker consultation, and training provision—including dedicated training time—with better worker outcomes. Consultation can help identify tasks worth redesigning, protect job quality, and select training that matches operational needs.
This evidence concerns workplace adoption, not a controlled test of courses for people already displaced. An employer’s promise of training is not proof of a new role, a permanent contract, or an earnings increase. Obtain the role description, assessment criteria, pay, duration, and what happens if the program ends before you give up an existing job.

Choosing a course before choosing an occupation
Correct this by starting with vacancies and employer requirements, then selecting the smallest credible learning intervention that closes the gap.
Assuming AI exposure means AI expertise is required
Many exposed workers need stronger domain, communication, analytical, management, or digital skills rather than advanced model-building. Let the target vacancy—not headlines—set the level.

Ignoring job quality
Check contract permanence, predictable hours, pay progression, benefits, workload, surveillance, and opportunities to use and develop your skills. A short-term or unsafe job may not be a stable transition even if it follows training.
Treating a global forecast as a personal plan
Use global projections to understand broad direction only. Decisions should rest on local vacancies, legal requirements, employer recognition, and your financial ability to complete the route.
A decision rule for enrolling
Proceed when you can answer yes to all of these questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Is there a clearly defined target occupation with current openings where you can work?
- Do employers repeatedly request the skill or credential the program teaches?
- Can you verify outcomes for participants comparable to you, including retention or earnings?
- Does the total cost and schedule fit your finances and responsibilities?
- Does the program provide a credible route to employers, work experience, or a recognized assessment?
If one answer is no, seek more evidence or choose a different route. That may mean a shorter course, an employer-supported transfer, an apprenticeship, or assistance finding work that uses your existing expertise.
What a realistic expectation looks like
Retraining can raise employability by making skills legible to employers, filling a documented gap, and creating access to interviews or work experience. It cannot control regional demand, hiring cycles, discrimination, health, caregiving constraints, immigration rules, or whether an employer converts a temporary role into a permanent one. Stable employment is the result of the training choice plus those labour-market conditions.
The strongest evidence-based approach is therefore conditional and local: verify what AI has changed in your work, select a target occupation from current vacancies, choose training recognized by its employers, and insist on independently measured placement, retention, and earnings results. Where those results do not exist, treat the program as an unproven investment rather than a guarantee.
