Raman spectroscopy can detect biochemical differences in tissue that may help researchers distinguish cancerous from noncancerous samples. But “bedside” can mean several different experimental workflows, and the method is not a universally available, stand-alone cancer diagnosis. Its possible role is to add rapid tissue information during care, especially as a complement to established pathology—not to replace a biopsy result.
What Raman spectroscopy detects
When light illuminates tissue, a small fraction scatters at frequencies shifted by interactions with vibrating molecules. Measuring those shifts produces a spectrum that reflects the sample’s chemical composition, including contributions from proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates. Researchers can use statistical or machine-learning methods to classify patterns associated with different tissue states. The spectrum is a biochemical fingerprint, not a direct image of cancer cells. A clinical translation review and a review of Raman applications in cancer describe this label-free approach.
Because tissue chemistry can differ with disease, a classifier may help distinguish tissue types. That does not mean the instrument independently “sees” cancer or that one spectrum answers every diagnostic question. The result depends on the tissue sampled, the measurement setup, the analysis method and validation against an appropriate reference.

What “bedside” can mean in practice
Raman-based cancer research covers distinct setups. Some examine a removed biopsy; others aim to measure tissue in the patient during a procedure. Stimulated Raman histology (SRH) is an imaging approach studied for rapid brain-tumor assessment, not simply another name for a handheld probe. A 2026 review of Raman in neuro-oncology discusses these and other developing workflows.

| Workflow | What is measured | Potential use under study |
|---|---|---|
| Ex vivo probe analysis | A fresh biopsy or other removed tissue, measured near the procedure | Rapid tissue characterization to inform decisions while a procedure is underway |
| In vivo point probe | Tissue in the patient, contacted or approached with a fiber-optic probe | Interrogating accessible surfaces or sites during surgery, potentially including margin assessment |
| SRH imaging | Raman-based images of tissue, often interpreted with computational methods | Rapid assessment of brain-tumor tissue during surgery |
| Other developing platforms | Examples include endoscopic Raman, biopsy-needle guidance and nanoparticle-enabled multimodal imaging | Research into access, visualization or tissue characterization in particular settings |
The categories are not interchangeable: they differ in whether tissue is still in the body, the area sampled, the instrument and the clinical decision they are intended to support. Reviews describe probe systems for accessible tissue surfaces and intraoperative use as developing clinical workflows, not routine tests available everywhere. A fiber-optic probe review and a clinical translation review cover the broader research landscape.
Can it diagnose cancer during surgery?
It is being investigated as a way to provide additional tissue information during procedures. A 2020 National Cancer Institute report described research combining SRH and artificial intelligence to assess brain-tumor tissue intraoperatively. The report presented this as a research approach and quoted clinicians discussing its potential to inform surgical decisions; it did not establish that SRH is a routine or definitive diagnosis.

Potential uses include characterization of tissue and support for surgical-margin decisions. A Raman result for a particular sample is not automatically equivalent to a complete pathology assessment, nor does a fast measurement in a research implementation establish the speed or reliability of every system. The 2026 neuro-oncology review describes multiple platforms and research workflows; performance and intended use must be considered for each one.
How accurate is bedside Raman cancer testing?
There is no single transferable accuracy figure for “bedside Raman cancer diagnosis.” The reviewed evidence does not establish a pooled clinical accuracy across cancers, instruments and workflows. A result from one tissue type, study cohort or validation method cannot safely be generalized to another.

To assess a specific study or system, look for:
- Cancer and tissue type: Results for one tumor or organ do not establish performance elsewhere.
- Sampling setup: Note whether measurement was in vivo or ex vivo, point-probe or imaging, and how much tissue was examined.
- Reference standard: Check what the Raman classification was compared against and whether the validation was independent of the data used to build the classifier.
- Intended clinical role: Research characterization, adjunctive guidance and a stand-alone diagnostic decision are different claims.
Reviews identify weak Raman signals, fluorescence interference, limited or point-by-point sampling, and subtle differences between spectra as practical challenges. Reliable classification also requires robust processing and algorithms validated on large, independent measurement sets. These factors help explain why promising findings in a particular study do not by themselves establish clinical accuracy across settings. A review of intraoperative vibrational spectroscopy and a clinical translation review discuss these limitations.
Can it replace a biopsy or pathology?
No general replacement claim is established. Raman measurements may eventually assist with rapid tissue characterization or support decisions during a procedure, but that is not the same as replacing biopsy and pathology. A point measurement samples a limited area, and interpretation depends on validated methods for the relevant tissue and clinical question. A suspected cancer still needs the diagnostic process recommended by the treating clinical team.

Is Raman cancer testing available at the bedside?
Availability depends on the exact system, clinical indication, institution and country. The research literature describes developing probe and imaging platforms; it does not establish universal bedside access. Nor does the FDA’s list of authorized companion diagnostics serve as a comprehensive database of Raman devices. For a named system, its intended use and regulatory status must be checked with the relevant regulator for the specific model, indication and jurisdiction.
