Qubes OS can host a Home Assistant virtual machine as an advanced experiment, but the official documentation does not establish a turnkey or supported Qubes-and-Home-Assistant setup. Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant OS, while Qubes is designed to run directly on hardware and warns against installing Qubes inside another virtual machine. For most people, a dedicated Home Assistant OS device or a documented VM host is the more straightforward choice.
Can you run Home Assistant OS in a Qubes VM?
Potentially, yes: Qubes supports hardware virtual machines (HVMs) that can be created from an operating-system ISO. But that general capability is not the same as documented support for Home Assistant OS specifically. Qubes’ generic HVMs lack Qubes agent scripts initially and require manual network configuration. The official documentation reviewed does not certify a Qubes HVM running Home Assistant OS.
That distinction matters if you expect an appliance-like installation. You would be adapting a general virtualization mechanism, not following a documented Qubes/Home Assistant deployment guide. Plan to handle setup and troubleshooting yourself, and do not assume that USB radios or other smart-home peripherals will pass through reliably.
Why the pairing is not an obvious fit
Qubes is meant to run on the physical machine
Qubes OS uses the Xen hypervisor to manage the computer’s hardware. Its system-requirements documentation says, “Installing Qubes in a virtual machine is not recommended, as it uses its own bare-metal hypervisor (Xen).” The installation guidance also says nested virtualization is not supported. In other words, Qubes is not intended to be a guest operating system under another hypervisor.

Home Assistant recommends its own operating system
Home Assistant’s installation documentation says, “Home Assistant Operating System is the recommended installation type.” It describes Home Assistant OS for single-board computers and virtual machines. Its Linux installation guidance likewise recommends Home Assistant OS for most users. These sources give readers a documented baseline; they do not identify Qubes as a recommended host.
Meeting Qubes’ hardware minimums does not prove compatibility
Qubes lists minimum requirements of 6 GB RAM and 32 GB of free storage, and recommended requirements of 16 GB RAM and 128 GB of free storage. The project cautions that these requirements are necessary but not sufficient. Check Qubes’ hardware compatibility guidance before choosing a machine; the published figures alone do not establish that a particular system will work well.

- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
How the practical options compare
| Option | Documented fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant OS on dedicated hardware | Home Assistant recommends Home Assistant OS and names Home Assistant Green and Raspberry Pi as devices for it. | A dedicated host avoids adapting Qubes’ HVM setup for this use. Confirm that the particular device and any required peripherals suit your installation. |
| Home Assistant OS in a virtual machine | Home Assistant documents virtual-machine installation. | Use a VM host that fits your needs and verify peripheral assignment, networking, and ongoing availability for your specific setup. |
| Home Assistant OS in a Qubes HVM | Qubes documents generic HVM creation; the reviewed documentation does not specifically validate Home Assistant OS in a Qubes HVM. | Expect manual network configuration and advanced troubleshooting. Compatibility for particular smart-home radios is not established by the cited documentation. |
What to choose instead of adapting Qubes
Choose a dedicated Home Assistant host for a simpler setup
If your priority is to run Home Assistant rather than experiment with virtualization, use Home Assistant OS on dedicated hardware. Home Assistant names Home Assistant Green and Raspberry Pi as options for Home Assistant OS. The documentation does not establish current pricing, stock, or suitability of every model, so choose a specific device based on your own hardware and peripheral requirements.
Choose a documented VM route if you already use virtualization
Home Assistant supports installation in a virtual machine. This can make sense if you already maintain a suitable VM host and can keep the Home Assistant guest running, provide network access, and assign any necessary peripherals. The documentation reviewed does not specify compatibility for individual Zigbee or Z-Wave USB adapters, so check the requirements for the exact radio and host before committing.

Use Qubes HVMs only if the experiment is the point
A Qubes HVM may suit an advanced user who specifically wants to explore this arrangement and is comfortable configuring networking and diagnosing problems without a Home Assistant-specific Qubes guide. Treat it as an experiment, not as an officially recommended or proven deployment. Keep in mind that the cited sources provide no comparative performance, energy-use, or reliability results for this combination.
