A game feature is not finished if players cannot read the text or perceive the visual cues it depends on. Check readability across menus, gameplay, objectives, chat, subtitles, captions, alerts, and loading screens—and test it in the conditions where people actually play.
What counts as readable in a game?
Readability is part of whether a feature works. A quest instruction that disappears against a bright scene, a chat message that is hard to distinguish, or a subtitle too small to follow can make information inaccessible even when the feature is technically present.
Consider every place the game communicates: menus and HUD elements, objectives and waypoints, instructions, NPC communications, player chat, subtitles, captions, loading screens, and notifications. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 101 asks designers to consider whether reading text is required in the game and treats text size, spacing, style, and color as elements of accessibility.
Set readable defaults and give players control
Start with defaults that are easy to read: text should be large and well-spaced enough for its purpose, with a clear distinction from its background. Do not make a player hunt through settings just to read routine instructions.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Where practical, let players adjust text size, spacing, style, and color. Microsoft’s guideline explains: “The best approach to ensuring that text is accessible for as many players as possible is by providing players with choices to configure the UI to best address their needs.”
Choice matters because there is no single presentation that works best for everyone. High contrast can improve visibility for players with low vision, but some players with cognitive disabilities or difficulty reading may find a high-contrast interface hard to perceive. The Game Accessibility Guidelines’ text-color recommendation likewise supports allowing color choice where feasible, or at least offering a contrast setting. Treat configuration as a way to accommodate different needs, not as a substitute for legible defaults.

Check contrast in the scene, not just in a menu
A text sample may look clear against a plain test background and become difficult to read over gameplay. Check labels and visual cues against the range of backgrounds, lighting, effects, and interface states in which they appear. Test both static screens and active play, where movement and changing scenes can obscure information.

Xbox Accessibility Guideline 102 calls for checking text and visual elements throughout game contexts. Contrast supports visibility, but it is not a universal fix: players may need different color and contrast choices, and the relevant question is whether the element remains interpretable in context.

Design for real viewing conditions
Players may use a small mobile screen, sit far from a television, or play in a noisy environment or with sound muted. These situations affect whether they can perceive an instruction or alert. Validate on the smallest supported screen and at a realistic viewing distance, rather than judging only on a development monitor.
Roblox Creator Hub’s accessibility guidance also recommends enlarging small labels and using sufficient text/background contrast, and notes player settings that include text size. The implementation details will vary by game and platform; the useful test is whether players can read important information in the conditions they encounter.

Do not make essential information depend on one channel
Text is not the only way to communicate, and sound is not always available or usable. Reinforce essential information through another suitable channel: for example, pair a written instruction with a visual cue, or provide text or visual equivalents for information conveyed by sound. The Game Accessibility Guidelines recommend clear subtitles and captions, readable default font sizes, strong text/background contrast, and conveying essential information through visuals and/or speech rather than text alone. For sound-dependent information, they recommend a text or visual equivalent.
Redundancy should preserve the meaning of the information, not merely add decoration. A visual marker, caption, or spoken cue should help players understand the same essential event or instruction.

Use a feature acceptance check
Make readability part of design review and feature validation. For each text or visual communication element, check:
- Coverage: Have you included menus, HUD, objectives, instructions, waypoints, NPC messages, chat, subtitles, captions, loading screens, and alerts that the feature touches?
- Default legibility: Can players read it at the default size and spacing, without relying on an optional setting?
- Player control: Can players change size, style, or color where feasible, and is there a contrast choice when a broader palette is not practical?
- Context: Does it remain distinguishable over changing backgrounds and during gameplay, on small screens and at realistic viewing distances?
- Alternative channels: Can players get essential information without relying only on text or only on sound?
If an element fails one of these checks, revise the feature or its presentation before treating it as complete. The test is not whether the text exists on screen; it is whether players can perceive and use the information when they need it.
