Yes. Cats and dogs can become infected with plague, a disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Cats are especially susceptible to serious illness; dogs are less likely to develop clinical disease but can still be infected or carry infected fleas indoors. Protection depends on veterinarian-guided flea control, preventing roaming and wildlife contact, reducing rodents around the home, and obtaining veterinary help quickly after a plausible exposure.
What plague is and why pets matter
Plague is an infection caused by Yersinia pestis. In nature, the bacterium circulates mainly among wild rodents and their fleas. An infected flea can bite another mammal, including a cat, dog, or person. A pet can therefore be part of the transmission chain even when the owner never visits a place where wild rodents are visible.
Risk is geographic rather than uniform. Plague persists in particular wildlife areas, and the boundaries can change as animal and flea activity changes. Local or state health departments are the best source for current information about a county or region. A 2016 CDC report describing plague in domestic cats in Idaho illustrates how veterinary and public-health agencies respond to a suspected case; it is not a current prevalence estimate for pets.

CDC veterinary guidance, updated May 15, 2024, states: “Cats are highly susceptible to plague and are a common source of infection in humans (owners and veterinarians).” That warning explains why an apparently isolated sick cat can become a household and clinic safety issue.

How pets become infected and how people can be exposed
Flea bites and fleas carried indoors
The principal route is a bite from an infected flea. Cats and dogs can pick up fleas while outdoors, during contact with wildlife, or in places where rodents live. A flea may then remain on the animal or enter bedding, carpets, vehicles, and other parts of the home. Dogs and cats can also carry infected fleas into a household without becoming visibly ill themselves.
Flea transmission is not limited to pets that roam. A wildlife burrow near a house, an unprotected crawl space, or a visiting animal can bring fleas close enough for exposure. Regular preventive treatment reduces the chance that adult fleas survive and reproduce, but it must be selected and used correctly.
Hunting, scavenging, and contact with wildlife
A pet can be infected after catching or handling an infected rodent or other small mammal. Bites, scratches, and contact with tissues or body fluids are plausible routes. Dead animals can also harbor fleas, so picking up a carcass can expose a person even if the pet appears healthy.

CDC veterinary guidance identifies infectious exudates, bites, scratches, and aerosolized bacteria from an animal with pneumonic plague as possible exposure routes. The risk therefore depends on what kind of contact occurred. Ordinary brief contact does not mean transmission is inevitable, but close handling of a sick animal, its secretions, or respiratory material requires professional advice.

Why a pet can change a household’s risk
An infected flea can move from an animal to a person. A sick cat can expose owners or veterinary staff through a bite, scratch, contaminated fluid, or respiratory droplets. The practical implication is to tell a veterinarian about a possible rodent, wildlife, or flea exposure before arriving, so staff can prepare appropriate precautions.
Cats and dogs: different levels of risk
| Question | Cats | Dogs |
|---|---|---|
| Likelihood of serious clinical illness | Highly susceptible; illness can be severe. | Less likely than cats to develop clinical illness, but not immune. |
| Potential role in human exposure | A sick cat can expose owners and veterinary staff; infected fleas may also spread. | Can become infected and can transport infected fleas into a home even when signs are mild or absent. |
| Exposure that should concern an owner | Rodent or wildlife contact, flea exposure, bites, scratches, or sudden illness after outdoor activity. | The same exposures; apparent good health does not rule out infection or flea carriage. |
| What to do | Arrange prompt veterinary assessment and disclose the possible exposure before arrival. | Arrange veterinary advice promptly after plausible exposure, especially if the dog becomes ill. |
Swollen lymph nodes, particularly beneath a cat’s jaw, may occur with plague. That finding is not diagnostic: enlarged nodes can result from many other conditions. A veterinarian must interpret the sign alongside the animal’s history, examination, and testing. Do not use a symptom checklist to rule plague in or out.
When a pet needs urgent veterinary attention
Contact a veterinarian promptly when a cat or dog becomes ill after contact with rodents, rabbits or other wildlife, a dead animal, or a flea-infested environment. A cat with unexplained illness deserves particular urgency because cats are more susceptible and are a recognized source of human infection.

Veterinary personnel may need precautions against fleas, respiratory droplets, secretions, or infected tissues. When plague is suspected in a cat, CDC advises prompt notification of public-health officials. That notification helps determine whether household members, veterinary workers, or other animals need follow-up.

Prevention steps owners can take
1. Use veterinarian-guided flea control
Ask the pet’s veterinarian which flea-control product fits the animal’s species, age, weight, health status, and household. Use it exactly as labeled. CDC flea guidance recommends treating dogs and cats year-round to kill adult fleas and prevent new fleas from hatching. A product that is safe for a dog may be dangerous for a cat, so never transfer a dose between species or combine products without veterinary direction.
A flea comb can help you inspect the coat or remove visible fleas. It is an inspection and grooming aid, not a replacement for a veterinarian-recommended preventive product. Flea management may also require cleaning sleeping areas and treating the environment according to professional advice, because immature flea stages can be off the animal.
2. Keep pets from roaming
In areas where plague occurs, keep cats indoors or otherwise confined and supervise dogs outdoors. Roaming increases opportunities to hunt rodents, investigate burrows, encounter stray animals, and pick up fleas. Limit contact with wild and stray animals, even when the animal appears healthy.

Make the area around the home less attractive to rodents. Remove brush piles, rock piles, cluttered firewood, junk, and other sheltered nesting sites. Do not leave pet food outside, and secure food or refuse that could feed wild animals. Rodent-proof the home and outbuildings by sealing entry points and maintaining screens, doors, and crawl-space barriers.

4. Handle dead animals safely
Do not pick up or touch dead rodents or other wildlife. Contact the local health department for advice about identification and disposal. If a pet has mouthed or carried a dead animal, keep people and other animals away from the item, wash hands after any unavoidable contact, and call the veterinarian before bringing the pet to a clinic.
5. Keep free-roaming pets off beds
CDC advises that free-roaming cats and dogs in endemic areas should not sleep on their owners’ beds. This reduces close exposure to fleas and to secretions if an animal becomes ill. It is an additional precaution, not a substitute for confinement and flea prevention.
6. Do not rely on vaccination in the United States
CDC states that a plague vaccine is no longer available in the United States. Current prevention therefore rests on flea control and exposure reduction, not on routine vaccination.

What to do after a possible exposure
- Separate cautiously. Keep the potentially sick animal away from people and other pets without provoking it or handling it unnecessarily. Avoid contact with saliva, drainage, blood, or respiratory secretions.
- Call the veterinarian. Explain the suspected exposure and the animal’s current condition before traveling. Follow instructions for transport and arrival.
- Record the exposure. Note when and where the pet encountered rodents, wildlife, a dead animal, or fleas; whether anyone was bitten or scratched; and whether the pet has been sleeping on beds or sharing close spaces.
- Contact public health when directed. Suspected plague in a cat should be reported promptly through veterinary and public-health channels. Officials can advise on animal handling, environmental control, and contacts.
- Assess people in the household. Anyone with a significant exposure should contact a healthcare provider and local public-health officials. CDC advises monitoring health closely for two weeks after the last possible contact. Professionals may recommend post-exposure antibiotics depending on the type and duration of contact.
- Do not self-medicate. Do not start human or veterinary antibiotics without a clinician’s direction; the correct drug, dose, timing, and duration depend on the exposure and the patient.
People who develop illness after a plausible exposure should tell the healthcare provider about the animal contact immediately. A person’s risk cannot be estimated from the pet’s appearance alone, because a dog may carry fleas with few signs and a cat may deteriorate quickly.

How to make a household plan in a plague-endemic area
Put the veterinarian’s flea-control schedule on a calendar and keep product packaging or dosing records available. Decide who will confine a roaming cat, supervise dogs, remove outdoor food sources, and contact the health department if a dead animal is found. Teach children not to touch wildlife, rodent nests, or sick pets and to tell an adult about bites or scratches immediately.
Review the plan whenever local health authorities announce plague activity. Geographic risk is local and can change, so a county-level advisory may justify stricter confinement than a general statement about an entire state. The same precautions protect household members from other flea- and rodent-associated infections as well.
Questions owners commonly ask
Can a healthy-looking dog give me plague?
A dog can be infected without developing the severe illness more commonly associated with cats, and it can carry infected fleas indoors. That possibility is why flea prevention and exposure history matter even when the dog seems normal.
What if my cat was near a sick or dead rodent?
Keep the cat from further contact, do not handle the rodent, and call the veterinarian before arriving. Report any bites, scratches, or visible fleas. The clinic and public-health officials will determine what monitoring or testing is appropriate.
Does touching my pet automatically transmit plague?
No. CDC describes risk in relation to specific contact, including infected fleas, bites, scratches, infectious fluids, and respiratory material from pneumonic illness. Avoiding those exposures and seeking professional advice is more useful than assuming either guaranteed transmission or zero risk.
Can I diagnose plague from swollen lymph nodes?
No. Swollen nodes under a cat’s jaw can occur with plague but also with many other diseases. Diagnosis requires veterinary evaluation and, when indicated, laboratory testing.
Is there a current plague vaccine for pets or people in the United States?
CDC states that a plague vaccine is no longer available in the United States. Prevention relies on controlling fleas, reducing rodent and wildlife contact, and obtaining rapid medical or veterinary advice after exposure.
