People with a shellfish allergy should not assume edible insects are safe. Proteins shared by crustaceans and some insects can trigger cross-reactive immune responses, and clinical reactions to insects have been documented. However, the risk is not established for every person, insect species, serving size, or preparation. Health Canada advises people with a crustacean allergy to avoid edible insects and foods containing them until they have spoken with an allergist or doctor.
That advice is precautionary, not a finding that every shellfish-allergic person will react to every insect. Species, the person’s clinical history, the type of allergy testing, and the way the insect was processed all matter.
Why shellfish and insects can cross-react
An allergy occurs when the immune system makes IgE antibodies that recognize a protein as a threat. Some proteins in crustaceans also occur in insects. When the structures are similar enough, antibodies made after exposure to shrimp, crab, lobster, or another crustacean may bind to an insect protein as well. That is called cross-reactivity.

Tropomyosin is one of the best-known proteins implicated in cross-reactivity between crustaceans and edible insects. It is involved in muscle contraction and is found across many invertebrate species. Similar molecular features can make an immune response to a crustacean recognize tropomyosin in an insect.

Arginine kinase
Arginine kinase is another protein associated with cross-reactivity. It participates in cellular energy metabolism and has been identified as an allergen in both crustaceans and some insects.
Finding that an antibody binds to one of these proteins in a laboratory test does not prove that a person will develop symptoms after eating the insect. A laboratory IgE result shows sensitization or binding; a real-world diagnosis requires the clinical history and, when appropriate, medically supervised testing.
What the clinical evidence actually shows
A small mealworm food-challenge study
A controlled study summarized by the UK Food Standards Agency in 2016 examined 15 people with shrimp allergy. A food challenge confirmed mealworm allergy in 13 participants. Because participants were selected for the study and the sample was very small, 13 of 15 is not a population-wide rate and cannot be converted into an individual reader’s probability of reacting.
The study does establish an important point: some people with shrimp allergy can have a genuine clinical reaction to mealworm, not merely a positive laboratory test. It does not show that all people with shellfish allergy will react, that mealworm is riskier than every other insect, or that the same proportion applies to crickets, locusts, or another species.

Species are not interchangeable
A 2020 study reported that shellfish-tropomyosin IgE cross-reactivity differs among edible insect species. Results for mealworm cannot automatically be applied to cricket, locust, or another insect. Different species contain different allergen profiles and amounts, and commercial foods may use different insect life stages, ingredients, and processing conditions.
Primary insect allergy is also possible
A reaction after eating an insect does not have to be caused solely by shellfish cross-reactivity. The evidence base described by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) also includes primary sensitization to insects. In that situation, the person’s immune system is reacting to an insect allergen even without a prior shellfish allergy.
What the evidence does not establish
Current evidence does not provide a universally safe insect species, a safe serving size, or a safe cooking method for people with crustacean allergy. It also does not establish a population-wide percentage of shellfish-allergic people who will react to insects. The 13-of-15 finding comes from a small, selected clinical sample rather than a general survey.

A person who tolerated a trace exposure may still react to a larger serving, and a previous uneventful meal does not guarantee that a different insect product will be tolerated.

Does cooking make insects safe?
Not reliably. Government risk assessment has described evidence that heating or enzymatic processing can change how strongly IgE binds to some measured proteins. That is a change in laboratory reactivity, not proof that an allergic person can safely eat the processed food.
Processing varies widely. An insect may be roasted, fried, boiled, milled into flour, fermented, or incorporated into a bar or baked product. The treatment may alter one allergen while leaving another active, and the finished food can contain enough residual protein to cause a reaction. Because these effects are not sufficiently understood, cooking or processing should not be used as a personal safety test.
How to decide what to do with a product
If you have a diagnosed crustacean allergy, the safest course is to avoid edible insects and foods containing them until an allergist or doctor has assessed your situation. Do not perform a home taste test, even if the product is labeled cooked, powdered, or processed.

Before buying or eating
- Identify the insect ingredient. Check whether the food contains a whole insect, insect flour, protein powder, extract, or an ingredient made from a named species.
- Read the complete ingredient list and precautionary statement. Look for statements about crustaceans, shellfish, insect ingredients, shared equipment, or cross-contact.
- Ask the manufacturer when wording is unclear. Request the exact insect species, the form used, processing steps, and whether the product is made on equipment that handles crustaceans.
- Do not treat a missing warning as proof of safety. Labeling rules differ by country, and voluntary precautionary statements may not be consistent.
- Discuss the specific product with your clinician. Give the allergist the package, ingredient list, and any manufacturer response rather than relying on a generic statement about “edible insects.”
Why Canadian labels need special caution
Health Canada says that some manufacturers place warnings on edible-insect foods indicating that they may not be suitable for people with crustacean allergy. In Canada, that warning is not mandatory under the current allergen-labelling rules. The absence of a warning therefore cannot be interpreted as a guarantee that an insect food is safe. This is a Canada-specific labeling point; requirements in another country may be different.

How an allergist evaluates the risk
EAACI notes that diagnostic tools for insect food allergy are limited. An allergist generally starts with a detailed history: the shellfish involved, symptoms, timing, amount eaten, previous reactions, other allergies, and the exact insect product. Testing is interpreted in that context.
What testing can and cannot tell you
- Skin-prick or blood IgE testing: A positive result can indicate sensitization, but it does not by itself prove that eating the insect will cause symptoms.
- Component or protein testing: Identifying reactivity to proteins such as tropomyosin may help characterize risk, but it still does not establish a safe dose.
- Supervised oral food challenge: When the specialist believes the information is necessary and the risk is manageable, a controlled challenge in a medical setting can provide direct clinical evidence. It should never be attempted at home.
An online checklist, a single IgE number, or a home test kit cannot clear a person to eat an insect product. A clinician also needs to consider whether the original “shellfish allergy” was confirmed and whether the suspected shellfish was a crustacean or a mollusk, because the available cross-reactivity evidence is not interchangeable across all foods called shellfish.
Comparing the kinds of evidence

Recognizing and responding to a reaction
Anyone with a diagnosed food allergy should follow the emergency plan supplied by their clinician. Symptoms can include hives, swelling, vomiting, coughing, wheezing, throat tightness, dizziness, or collapse. A severe reaction can develop quickly and may involve more than one body system.

Common questions about shrimp, crickets, and mealworms
Can I eat crickets if I am allergic to shrimp?
Do not assume that crickets are safe. The available evidence shows that cross-reactivity differs by insect species, and it does not establish a safe cricket dose for people with shrimp allergy. Ask an allergist before eating a cricket product.
Are mealworms safe if I have a shellfish allergy?
Safety is not established. A controlled study confirmed mealworm allergy in 13 of 15 selected shrimp-allergic participants, which is enough to demonstrate real clinical risk but not enough to predict every person’s response.
Does a negative insect IgE test mean I can eat the product?
Not necessarily. Tests can miss relevant allergens, extracts may not represent the commercial food, and results must be interpreted with the exposure history. A negative result is not a substitute for specialist advice.
What if I have eaten insects before without a reaction?
Tell your allergist what you ate, how much, and when. Prior tolerance is useful history, but it does not prove that another species, formulation, dose, or batch will be tolerated.
Putting the risk in context
Health Canada estimated shellfish allergy prevalence at 1.1% of the Canadian general population on a page dated 2021. That figure describes shellfish allergy in Canada; it is not an estimate of insect cross-reactivity and should not be used to calculate the chance that a shellfish-allergic person will react to an insect.
The strongest practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: an edible insect is not automatically safe merely because it is not a crustacean. Shared proteins, species differences, limited clinical studies, and uncertain processing effects make a product-specific medical discussion the responsible next step.
