Yes. Parents can switch off voice chat inside GTA Online, mute particular players, or use a child’s platform account settings to limit communication or multiplayer access. These controls have different reach: muting one player does not block everyone, and turning off GTA voice chat does not by itself prevent the child from joining online multiplayer.
Choose the restriction that matches your concern

How to turn off or narrow voice chat in GTA Online
Turn off all in-game voice chat
- Open the GTA Online Pause menu.
- Go to Settings and select Voice Chat.
- Set Voice Chat Enabled to off. The player will not hear or speak to other players through GTA Online voice chat. Rockstar’s Online Communication and Privacy resource documents this setting.
Mute a particular player
- Open Pause > Online > Players.
- Highlight the player to mute and choose Options.
- Select Toggle Mute. This applies to that player, not everyone in the session.
Rockstar also says the Voice Chat option can control which group the player hears. Its instructions for muting and group selection are in How to mute other players in GTA Online.
Use PlayStation family settings for account-level controls
On PlayStation, a family manager, parent, or guardian can manage a child’s privacy settings, including who can interact with the child through games, parties, and messages. These are account-level controls rather than a GTA-specific multiplayer switch. Review the available options in PlayStation’s privacy settings guidance; the exact choices depend on the child account and current platform settings.
Check Xbox privacy settings on Xbox consoles
For GTA Online on Xbox consoles, Rockstar identifies Xbox privacy and online-safety permissions as affecting voice and text communication and invites, including communication outside the Xbox network. If the aim is to limit who the child can communicate with, review the child account’s Xbox communication permissions. Rockstar’s Xbox console voice-chat guidance describes the relevant permissions. Xbox menu names can change, so follow the current account and family settings screens.

For GTA Online through the Xbox app on PC, restrict multiplayer separately
Rockstar documents two Xbox privacy permissions that can prevent access to GTA Online through the Xbox app on PC: You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play. These permissions are separate from voice chat. Rockstar’s Xbox app on PC troubleshooting guidance explains the settings. For this PC case, cross-network play refers to PC players connecting across PC platforms or launchers; Rockstar says PC players cannot play with console players.
Rockstar also documents Xbox app on PC account settings affecting in-game voice chat, Crews, and Jobs. Those settings are described in its PC access guidance. A restriction or troubleshooting step for this Xbox app setup should not be assumed to apply to other PC launchers.

Keep the scope of each control in mind
- GTA Online voice chat: the in-game switch turns off voice communication, while player muting targets one person and group selection narrows who can be heard.
- Platform communication settings: these apply at the account level and may cover interaction beyond one game.
- Multiplayer access: this is a separate restriction from chat. The cited Rockstar instructions establish it for the Xbox app on PC; they do not establish identical steps for every platform.
These instructions cover GTA Online controls and the cited PlayStation and Xbox account guidance. Options and menus are not established here for every GTA title, console family, or PC launcher. Check the family or privacy controls for the specific platform your child uses rather than assuming another platform’s steps will match.
