Usually, they can reduce a steady data-center hum, but they are unlikely to make it disappear completely. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is designed to counter repetitive, low-frequency sound, and a constant ventilation or equipment drone is a plausible match. However, the available guidance does not include a test in a data center or show that any particular headphone eliminates a specific facility’s hum.
Your result depends on the hum’s actual frequencies and level, the headphone’s ANC performance, and whether its ear cups maintain a reliable seal. Treat ANC as one part of noise reduction, not as a guarantee of silence or as hearing-protection equipment.
How ANC and passive isolation deal with a hum
ANC headphones use microphones to sample sound around your ears. Their electronics generate a matching signal with opposite phase, reducing part of the incoming sound before it reaches your hearing. The cancellation is continuously adjusted while you wear the headphones, so it works best when the unwanted sound is reasonably consistent.

The ear cups also provide passive isolation. Cushions and cup materials physically block some sound, while a snug seal prevents air from leaking around your ears. ANC and passive isolation work together: the electronics address suitable parts of the sound spectrum, and the physical seal reduces whatever the cups can attenuate without electronic help.

Sennheiser’s support guidance describes ANC as most effective for repetitive, low-frequency noises such as engine or air-conditioning hum, and less effective for higher-frequency sounds such as speech. Jabra similarly explains that ANC targets steady sounds while passive isolation comes from the materials and fit of the headphones. Those examples make a constant server-room drone a plausible use case, but they are not measurements from a data-center room.
Why a data-center hum is a plausible—but unproven—target
Steady, tonal noise gives ANC its best chance
If the sound reaching you is a continuous low-frequency drone, ANC has time to analyze it and produce an opposing signal. A fan, chiller, or power-system hum that stays similar from minute to minute is closer to the engine and air-conditioning examples in manufacturer explanations than to conversation, keyboard clicks, or alarms.
The word if matters. A data center can contain several overlapping sources, and the combined sound may include changing tones, broadband airflow, rattles, and vibration transmitted through the building. A headphone cannot be matched confidently to the room without knowing the frequencies and level at the wearer’s position. No source reviewed here reports such a spectrum or a test result for a named facility.

“Reduce” does not mean “silence”
Even when ANC is working normally, residual sound can remain. Sennheiser notes that users may hear a faint electronic hiss, and both ANC and passive isolation vary by model and by fit. You may still notice a low tone in quiet passages, and voices or sudden sounds can remain more prominent than the background drone because they contain changing, higher-frequency components.
Fit and seal often decide the practical result
Choose cups that surround your ears
A comfortable over-ear design is generally the most sensible starting point for a room hum because it gives the cushions a chance to seal around the entire ear. Comfort is not cosmetic: if the headband is too loose, the cups shift, or you remove the headphones frequently, the seal and therefore the passive contribution change.

Check common leaks
Hair caught between the cushion and your head, eyeglass arms, jewelry, or a cushion that is detached or positioned incorrectly can create a gap. Jabra’s explanation of passive isolation emphasizes the importance of physical materials and a snug fit, while guidance on headphone performance warns that glasses, hair, and incorrectly attached pads can impair the seal. Adjust the cups until the cushion contacts your head continuously without painful pressure.
Fit can vary during a shift
Try the headphones while seated, standing, and turning your head. If the hum changes sharply when you move the cups by a few millimeters, the seal is contributing substantially and should be treated as a fitting issue rather than proof that the ANC electronics are defective. A pair that is technically capable but uncomfortable for several hours may be less useful than a slightly less aggressive model that you can wear consistently.
What to compare when choosing a pair
Marketing labels such as “maximum noise cancellation” do not tell you how a product behaves at the particular frequencies in your room. Compare the following attributes instead:
| Approach | How it reduces sound | Where it may help with a steady hum | Limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over-ear ANC headphones | Microphones and an opposite-phase signal, plus the ear-cup seal | Low-frequency, repetitive noise is the category ANC is generally designed to reduce | Residual noise, electronic hiss, variable ANC quality, and fit-dependent results |
| Passive-isolation headphones without ANC | Cup materials and a physical seal | Can reduce sound that the cup blocks, including some components of a drone | Cannot electronically counter the sound; effectiveness depends heavily on seal and materials |
| ANC with a strong passive seal | Electronic cancellation and physical attenuation together | Offers two mechanisms when the cups fit the wearer correctly | A poor seal can undermine both the passive benefit and the real-world result; no universal model winner is established |
Look for frequency-specific measurements
When independent measurements are available, prefer graphs or tables showing attenuation by frequency over a single broad marketing number. A single headline figure can conceal weak performance at the exact low frequencies produced in your room. The sources available for this topic do not provide model-level figures, so they cannot support ranking named headphones.
Understand the current measurement standard
The British Standards Institution catalogue lists BS EN IEC 60268-24:2024, which specifies characteristics and measurement and evaluation methods for headphone ANC. The listing describes a way to measure ANC; it is not a test result for a particular product or data center. It also states that the document does not cover equipment intended for hearing protection. A headphone can comply with an audio measurement standard without being suitable protection from hazardous workplace noise.

Plan a real-room trial
If possible, buy from a seller whose return policy allows you to check fit and performance in the actual room. No reviewed source establishes that a current named model has been tested against your facility’s hum. A trial in the room is therefore more informative than assuming that a specification or a review from another environment predicts your result.

Use a controlled, repeatable check rather than relying on your first impression in a quiet office.
- Characterize the room. Stand or sit where you normally work and note whether the sound is steady, pulsing, tonal, or mixed with voices and alarms. Test at the times you would wear the headphones, because equipment operating states can change.
- Fit the cups carefully. Move hair and glasses away from the cushion where practical, center each cup over the ear, and adjust the headband until the seal is even. Do not judge ANC while the cups are crooked or partly off your ears.
- Listen with ANC off. This gives you a baseline for the combination of passive isolation and the unprocessed room sound. Keep the volume low; increasing music volume can mask the hum without reducing it.
- Enable ANC without playback. Compare the room with ANC on and no music or podcast. A reduction in the steady drone indicates that the system is addressing some of the ambient sound; it does not prove that all frequencies are being removed.
- Compare movement and positions. Turn your head, stand, and return to your usual seat. Large changes suggest that fit, room position, or the sound field is influencing the result.
- Check speech and alerts separately. Ask whether conversations, warning tones, or other transient sounds remain audible. ANC that reduces the hum may still leave these sounds noticeable, which can be important for safe operation and communication.
- Repeat after extended wear. Confirm that pressure, heat, battery behavior, or slippage does not cause you to loosen the cups. A result you cannot maintain for a full work period is not a practical solution.
Common reasons the hum remains audible
The sound is not as steady or low-frequency as it seems
Human hearing often describes a complex room as a single “hum.” If the sound includes higher-frequency components, changing tones, or mechanical rattles, ANC may address only part of it. The manufacturer examples support the strongest expectation for repetitive low-frequency content, not for every sound produced by data-center equipment.
The seal is leaking
Hair, glasses, damaged pads, or an incorrect cup position can bypass passive isolation. Refit the headphones and inspect the cushions before concluding that the ANC circuitry is ineffective. If the seal repeatedly breaks when you move, try a different cup shape or headband adjustment.
Residual sound or electronic hiss is masking the improvement
ANC does not create an acoustically silent space. Sennheiser notes that residual sound and a faint hiss may remain. In a quiet interval, that hiss can be more noticeable even though the low-frequency hum has been reduced. Compare ANC on and off at the same listening level and without playback so you are evaluating the room, not a louder audio signal.

Vibration is traveling through the building
Headphones act on sound reaching the microphones and your ears. If you feel a vibration through a chair, floor, or wall, reducing airborne sound may not remove that physical sensation. The available sources do not provide a data-center test that separates airborne hum from structure-borne vibration, so a persistent tactile sensation should be treated as a different problem requiring facilities or acoustic investigation.
Safety, communication, and hearing protection
Consumer ANC headphones are not automatically hearing-protection devices. The BSI catalogue’s scope statement for BS EN IEC 60268-24:2024 explicitly says the standard does not deal with equipment intended for hearing protection. Do not use an ANC rating as evidence that workplace exposure is below a permissible limit.
Follow your site’s safety rules for alarms, paging, radios, and communication. Because speech and sudden sounds can remain more noticeable than a steady low-frequency background, decide whether wearing headphones could prevent you from hearing a required warning. If the room may expose you to hazardous sound levels, ask the responsible safety professional or occupational-health service for an approved hearing-protection assessment rather than substituting consumer headphones.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Sennheiser and Jabra provide manufacturer explanations of ANC and examples involving engine, office-equipment, and air-conditioning hum. Those explanations support the general mechanism and the expectation that repetitive low-frequency sound is a reasonable target. They are not independent comparative tests between headphone models.
The BSI entry provides a current measurement framework and publication information for ANC characteristics; it does not publish a noise-reduction number for consumer headphones in a data center. No reviewed source measures a data-center room, identifies the spectrum of a particular facility’s hum, or matches a named model to that environment. Consequently, there is no evidence-based “best” model to recommend from these sources.
The defensible decision is conditional: choose a comfortable over-ear pair with a dependable seal, examine credible frequency-specific measurements when available, and verify the result in the room under the conditions in which you will wear it. Expect a quieter background rather than guaranteed silence, and keep hearing-protection and alarm requirements separate from the consumer-audio choice.
