Windows 11’s Multi-App Camera feature is designed to let more than one application access a camera stream at once. Microsoft announced it in preview update notes dated May 26, 2026, but those notes do not establish a universal consumer-facing switch or guarantee that every camera and app supports it. If you cannot find a multi-app setting, check the documented admin control and make sure camera privacy permissions are enabled; they are separate controls.

What Multi-App Camera does—and what it does not do

Microsoft describes Multi-App Camera as a Windows 11 feature that “allows multiple applications to access your camera stream at the same time.” That is the intended behavior, not a promise that every camera, driver, or application will work with multiple simultaneous connections. The May 26, 2026 announcement appeared in preview update notes, so it should not be taken as proof that the feature is available on every Windows 11 PC.

Multi-App Camera is distinct from camera privacy permissions. The feature concerns whether multiple apps can use the stream concurrently; privacy settings determine whether Windows allows apps to access the camera at all.

How to check whether the multi-app setting is available

For a basic camera settings check, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and select the camera. Microsoft says the options shown there vary with the camera’s capabilities and Windows version. Its reviewed documentation does not establish a complete consumer walkthrough, a definitive setting label, or a supported-build list for turning on Multi-App Camera. If you do not see a multi-app option, do not assume that another similarly named camera or privacy switch enables it.

For administrators: configure the camera mode through Group Policy

Microsoft’s May 26, 2026 preview update notes document a Group Policy control for enterprise administrators to select Multi-App Camera mode or Basic Camera mode:

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor or the applicable Group Policy management tool.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Camera.
  3. Open Configure Camera Options and configure the mode according to your organization’s policy.

This is the documented administrator path; it is not evidence that every consumer Windows 11 installation exposes an equivalent Settings toggle.

Check camera privacy permissions separately

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Check that camera access is enabled, then review the relevant app permissions. Microsoft Store apps can have individual access switches. Desktop apps use a general desktop-app access control on this page; they cannot be individually toggled there. Browsers and many video-conferencing programs are desktop apps, so check the general desktop-app setting when one of those cannot access the camera.

Troubleshoot when one app still cannot use the camera

  1. Check permissions: In Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, confirm camera access and the appropriate app or desktop-app access control are enabled.
  2. Close other camera apps: Exit apps that may already be using the device, then try the app that failed. This can help identify an app conflict, though it is not a guaranteed fix for Multi-App Camera compatibility.
  3. Test the camera: Open Start > Camera and see whether the built-in Camera app can display video. If it cannot, the problem may be with the device or Windows configuration rather than the app you first tried.
  4. Check common causes: Microsoft lists missing drivers after an update, antivirus software, and restrictive privacy settings among possible reasons a camera may not work. Review those areas if the basic checks do not resolve the issue.
  5. Notice camera activity: If your device has a camera activity light, it turns on when the camera is active. On devices without one, Windows shows a notification when the camera turns on or off. These indicators can help you observe camera use while testing apps.

These are general camera troubleshooting steps. They do not confirm that a particular camera or application supports simultaneous access under Multi-App Camera mode.
