Usually, no: malware on one car’s infotainment system does not automatically spread to another nearby car. A vehicle-to-vehicle worm is technically possible, but it would need a way to propagate, a second vehicle with a compatible vulnerability, and a path through the vehicle’s network that is not adequately contained. NHTSA has discussed that as a potential scenario—not as evidence of a routine or active car-to-car outbreak.
What would have to happen for malware to spread between cars?
Two vehicles being parked near each other is not enough. For malware to move from one vehicle to another, several conditions would have to line up:
- The first vehicle must be compromised.
- The malware must be capable of copying itself or otherwise reaching another vehicle through a communication interface.
- A second vehicle must be reachable over that interface and have a compatible weakness.
- Its network architecture must allow the malware to reach the relevant component rather than containing it.
NHTSA’s historical vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) proposal described the possibility of self-replicating malware reaching similar vulnerable systems in communications range. The proposal framed this as a risk scenario, not a finding that such an outbreak had occurred. It also noted that possible effects depend on the vehicle’s databus design. A communication path need not be direct V2V technology: wireless interfaces such as cellular, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth may be relevant depending on the vehicle. A historical NHTSA example described researchers who said a worm could have been designed after exploiting a vehicle’s cellular connection. That does not mean a worm was deployed in that case.

Does infotainment malware mean the whole car is controlled?
No. Infotainment, telematics, and safety-critical vehicle systems may be connected in different ways, and access to one component does not automatically grant access to every other system. Network segmentation and access controls determine what a compromised component can reach.
In a historical case, researchers exploited wireless functions in the radio module of an unaltered 2014 passenger vehicle. The module was connected to two CAN buses, and the FBI and NHTSA advisory described the ability to manipulate selected vehicle functions. The agencies reported that almost 1.5 million vehicles were recalled in connection with those vulnerabilities. That figure refers to the recall population—not to infections or vehicles reached by a spreading worm—and the case does not establish that other models share the same weakness. FBI and NHTSA advisory

Which connections can create exposure?
Official guidance identifies several interfaces that may create entry points. Their actual risk depends on the vehicle’s model, software version, configuration, and security design.
- Wireless services: cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth functions.
- Connected phones and tablets: devices linked through USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
- Diagnostic-port devices: third-party equipment attached through the OBD-II port.
The FBI and NHTSA caution that a vulnerability does not necessarily provide access to every vehicle system. NHTSA’s best-practices guidance recommends authenticating third-party connections and limiting their access to what they need. What should owners do?
- Check for recalls and software updates using the manufacturer’s official channels or official recall information for your exact vehicle.
- Verify update notices with the manufacturer, and download update files only from its official source. Avoid third-party download sites and file-sharing services.
- Do not connect unknown devices to the OBD-II diagnostic port.
- Use care when pairing devices or connecting phones over USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi; follow the vehicle maker’s instructions.
- Seek model-specific help from the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the vehicle behaves unexpectedly or a recall applies. Do not install unofficial firmware.
NHTSA’s guidance favors layered protections: secure interfaces, restricted access between vehicle networks, incident response, and designs that support recovery. Its 2023 keynote also noted an ongoing research project on infotainment and risks associated with vehicle and mobile-device pairing technologies. There is no established fleet-wide rate of malware spreading from one vehicle to another in the cited agency material. Vehicle systems, interfaces, software, network boundaries, and update processes vary, so a vulnerability in one model or year should not be generalized to all cars. For a specific vehicle, rely on its manufacturer’s notices and any model-specific recall or security advisory.
