Klassik recreates selected parts of the KDE 3 desktop inside KDE Plasma 6: a classic-style panel and menu, several applets, an application style, a KDE 2 window-decoration port, color schemes and legacy wallpapers. It is a developing visual recreation—not a restoration of the complete KDE 3 software stack. The project is built for Qt 6 and KDE’s current frameworks, and its author says it supports Wayland and fractional scaling.
What Klassik brings back—and what it does not
Klassik is installed into an existing Plasma 6 desktop. The project repository describes a Qt 6 and Qt Quick recreation of selected classic KDE components, rather than a separate desktop environment or a way to run the original KDE 3 stack.
Included components
- A custom panel containment, with support for custom background images.
- Panel applets: the K Menu, Quicklaunch, a task manager, lock and log-out buttons, and analog and digital clocks.
- A rewrite of the KDE 2/3 default QStyle for Qt 6, affecting application styling.
- A port of a KDE 2 KWin window decoration to KDecoration3.
- Color schemes originating in KDE 3 and a set of wallpapers originally included with KDE 3.
The panel applets are reimplementations, and the author has described additional applets as planned. The listed features therefore define a selection of recreated desktop elements, not complete KDE 3 parity.
How it fits into Plasma 6
Klassik uses Qt 6, KDE Frameworks 6 and Plasma 6 libraries. Its author says it supports Wayland and fractional scaling; those are project claims, not independent compatibility test results.
Porting a legacy desktop appearance to Plasma 6 is more than copying old theme files. KDE’s Plasma 6 theme-porting guide explains that global themes are KPackages and need a manifest.json entry with "KPackageStructure": "Plasma/LookAndFeel" to appear in Global Theme settings. The guide also documents breaking changes, including renamed QML imports and the inability to load Plasma 6 global themes through symlinks. That is the broader migration context; it does not establish a specific defect in Klassik.
How to build and activate Klassik
The repository’s documented route is a build from source. It lists Qt 6, KDE Frameworks 6 and KDE Plasma 6 development libraries among the compilation requirements; the precise package names and installation commands depend on your Linux distribution.

- Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/neeeeow/Klassik.git. - Build and install the project with CMake, using a Release build as described in the repository’s README.
- Open System Settings → Colors & Themes → Global Theme.
- Select Klassik. Before applying it, enable Desktop and window layout so the Klassik panel is loaded.
The README points users to the default master branch for cloning. It warns that develop contains work in progress and may be unstable. The documented instructions describe a source build; they do not establish that a prebuilt package or one-click installation is available.

Some details discussed by the project author may evolve. In a public project discussion, the author said panel auto-hide of the requested kind could not be implemented from within the containment because KDE reserves space for the panel. The author described enlarging icons on hover as a possible future feature, not a confirmed current capability. Check the repository for the present state before relying on either behavior.

The discussion also raises questions about which KDE 3 version is being represented and whether specific old decorations, such as Keramic, will be ported. The material does not establish a complete version-by-version recreation or a promise to port every historical decoration.

Klassik’s stated approach is to recreate selected visuals within the modern Plasma 6 environment. In the project discussion, its author characterizes Trinity as retaining Qt 3 and X11, in contrast to Klassik’s use of Qt 6 within Plasma. That is the author’s characterization, not a full, independently verified feature comparison. The important distinction for a prospective user is the project’s stated scope: Klassik adds a classic appearance to Plasma rather than claiming to restore the full legacy desktop stack.
