Yes, some children can play VALORANT, but it is not a child-focused game. In the United States, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates it Teen for Blood, Language, Violence, Users Interact, and In-Game Purchases. Whether it is appropriate for a particular child depends on maturity, comfort with a first-person shooter, readiness for contact with strangers online, and the controls available in the child’s region.
There is no single worldwide minimum age or universally available parental switch for voice chat. Riot’s age-verification and guardian-approval rules differ by region, so parents must check the child’s local Riot account portal and the current in-game communication settings.
What age rating is VALORANT?
The current US ESRB listing gives VALORANT a Teen rating. That rating is a US classification, not a global legal minimum age and not a personalized judgment about every child.

ESRB’s parent guidance treats the “Users Interact” notice as a reminder that online games can expose children to communication from other players. It recommends reviewing the game’s terms and settings. The notice does not measure how often children encounter insults, profanity, or other abusive behavior, and no source establishes a universal age at which VALORANT is suitable.

Is VALORANT safe for a 10-year-old?
There is no evidence-based yes-or-no answer for every 10-year-old. The Teen rating means a parent should actively evaluate the game rather than assume that a younger child will have the same experience as an older teenager. A 10-year-old who is comfortable with realistic-looking gunplay, can follow family rules, and has close supervision may respond differently from a child who is easily upset by violence or struggles to leave hostile online conversations.
Consider five separate questions:
- Content: Is your child comfortable with a first-person shooter involving guns, explosions, blood effects, and fictional abilities?
- Online contact: Can your child handle hearing or reading language from strangers and tell you when a conversation becomes inappropriate?
- Self-control: Will the child stop playing when asked, avoid retaliating in chat, and leave a match if necessary?
- Spending: Are you comfortable with a game that carries an In-Game Purchases notice, and have you agreed how purchases will be handled?
- Supervision: Can an adult review the account’s regional permissions and the communication settings the child actually sees?
These questions are more useful than treating “Teen” as an automatic permission threshold. The rating is a reference point; the family’s decision should account for the child’s temperament, prior online experience, and the amount of supervision available.
Why voice chat changes the decision
Communication is built into VALORANT’s team format. Riot Games has said, “Comms are a fundamental part of VALORANT.” Voice can help teammates coordinate, but it also creates a direct channel to people the family does not know.

Riot’s September 22, 2026 “Playing with Respect” announcement says its Riot Voice Evaluation system was updated in Patch 13.06 to better identify toxic communication in Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean, with additional languages planned. Riot also reported that other improvements helped it identify and penalize “2x more instances of voice comms abuse over the last year.” That is Riot’s own report about its enforcement work, not an independent measurement of how often abuse occurs and not a guarantee that a child will avoid it.
Riot says players can report abusive voice communication in the game. Its stated instruction is: “If someone is abusing voice comms, use the Voice Comms Abuse report category in-game so we can evaluate that interaction.” Menu wording and support procedures can change, so use the current category shown in the client rather than relying on an old screenshot or guide.
What moderation can and cannot do
- Reporting gives Riot a way to review an interaction and apply penalties under its policies.
- Voice evaluation may improve detection, but detection is not instantaneous and cannot prevent every offensive comment from being heard.
- A report process is a response mechanism, not proof that a match will be harassment-free.
- Children still need a plan for muting, leaving, and telling an adult when communication crosses a boundary.
Can you turn off voice chat in VALORANT?
Do not assume there is one universal parental voice-chat switch. Riot’s age-verification information says that some guardians can manage permissions through a parental portal, but the reviewed information does not list every control and does not establish that disabling VALORANT voice chat is available through that portal in every region.

Parents should check two places for the child’s specific account:

- The current VALORANT client: Open the game’s present Settings and communication or voice options, note which controls are available on the child’s account, and test the result with the child. Labels and options can change after updates, so verify them in the installed version rather than relying on a general web description.
If the regional portal does not show a voice-specific setting, that absence does not prove that no in-game communication control exists; it means the available control must be verified in the client and through current regional support information. Avoid promising a parent that voice can always be disabled before you have checked the account.
How Riot’s age and guardian rules work
Riot’s age-verification support information says the age at which a minor may play without guardian approval depends on the region. Some locations require age verification, and a minor below the local age for independent use may need a guardian to approve the account. In some regions, guardians can manage a child’s permissions in a Riot parental portal.

A practical parent setup checklist
Use this sequence before allowing a child to play regularly. It separates account eligibility from day-to-day supervision.
- Identify the account region. Confirm the country or region attached to the Riot account. Do not apply a US rating or another country’s age rule as if it were universal.
- Read the local age-verification instructions. Follow Riot’s current regional support flow. If guardian approval is requested, complete it through the official account process rather than sharing an adult password with the child.
- Review every permission offered. Record what the regional parental portal can manage. If there is no voice-specific control, say so plainly and move to the game’s own communication settings.
- Inspect the installed client. In the current VALORANT Settings, review voice and other communication options while signed in as the child. Confirm what the child can hear, transmit, mute, or change, then recheck after major updates.
- Agree on communication rules. Tell the child not to share a real name, address, school, phone number, passwords, or live location. Establish a simple rule: stop, mute or leave, and tell an adult when another player is threatening, sexual, discriminatory, or persistently abusive.
- Practice reporting. Explain where the in-game report function appears and select the current Voice Comms Abuse category when that is the reason for reporting. A child should not be expected to investigate or confront the other player.
- Set a purchase rule. Because the ESRB lists In-Game Purchases, decide in advance whether purchases are allowed, who approves them, and what happens if the child encounters a purchase prompt. The evidence available here does not establish a universal VALORANT spending-control workflow, so check the relevant account and platform settings yourself.
- Review the first sessions together. Watch or play nearby long enough to see the actual mix of text, voice, teammates, and match intensity. Adjust the decision based on your child’s behavior, not on the game’s marketing description.
What to do when another player is abusive
Give the child a short response plan instead of asking them to win an argument. First, stop responding. Next, use the communication controls available in the current client to mute or limit the player. Then leave the interaction if necessary and report it through the in-game process, choosing Voice Comms Abuse when appropriate. Finally, tell a trusted adult and preserve any information the reporting flow requests.

Riot’s moderation systems can evaluate reports and penalize some behavior, but the child may hear the comment before a system acts. For that reason, supervision and a clear exit rule remain necessary even when communication detection is enabled.
How to think about in-game purchases
The ESRB’s In-Game Purchases notice is a separate issue from violence and voice chat. It tells parents that the game includes purchases; it does not specify the price range, item types, refund rules, or a universal parental spending control. Do not assume that a child cannot reach a purchase prompt simply because voice or text communication has been restricted.
Make the family rule explicit before the first match: no purchase without permission, or no purchases at all. Check the payment and account controls offered in your region and on the platform being used, and review them again if the child changes devices or account ownership.

A headset with a microphone and a physical mute control can make team communication easier if the child is allowed to use voice chat. It is optional, not required to play, and it is not a parental control or a safety intervention. A mute button can help a child stop transmitting quickly, but it does not by itself block what other players say.

Check Riot’s regional age and guardian requirements, inspect the communication controls on the child’s actual account, establish rules for muting and reporting, and revisit those settings after updates.
