Inflammation is one of several biological processes researchers are investigating in Alzheimer’s disease, but no inflammation-targeting treatment has been established as a way to prevent or slow the disease. Human trials are testing candidate medicines, while diet studies remain ongoing. These are research leads—not proof that an anti-inflammatory drug, supplement, or diet treats Alzheimer’s.

Why study inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s research examines interacting biological processes, including amyloid, tau, vascular and metabolic factors, and inflammation. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) describes work on inflammation across basic, translational, and clinical research; it is one part of a broad effort, not a settled replacement for other explanations of the disease.

In its 2024 Report to Congress, NIA wrote: “Recognizing inflammation as a critical process in disease onset and progression, NIH is funding projects across the research continuum – from basic, to translational, to clinical – with the aim of identifying and testing potential therapeutics that target inflammation in AD/ADRD.” Funding and testing candidates does not establish that they work.

Are inflammation-targeting medicines being tested?

Yes. NIA’s 2024 report gives a dated snapshot of its funded inflammation portfolio: as of December 2023, it included one Phase 2b trial and eight early-phase trials in Phases 1 and 2a. This is not a current live trial count, and a trial’s phase describes its stage of development, not whether it has succeeded.

Examples of candidates and studies

Candidate or study Approach and participants Stage or measures described
MW150 Designed to inhibit p38alphaMAPK, reduce inflammation, and support synaptic function. NIA described a Phase 2a study focused on safety, tolerability, cognition, and activities of daily living.
MCLENA-1 Lenalidomide study in people with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Included in NIH/NIA’s active-trials listing, whose page data are dated March 2025.
GM-CSF/sargramostim study Study in Alzheimer’s disease. Listed as a Phase II study in the NIH/NIA listing dated March 2025.

Descriptions and anticipated completion dates in a trial listing are not trial results. Status can change, so check the official NIA Alzheimer’s disease clinical trials listing for current information. The available sources do not provide head-to-head results for these candidates, so they cannot be ranked by effectiveness.

How does this differ from approved Alzheimer’s treatment?

Inflammation-targeting candidates are investigational; anti-amyloid immunotherapies are a separate treatment approach. NIA’s 2025 progress report says FDA-approved anti-amyloid therapies for early Alzheimer’s have slowed cognitive decline in some people, while further research is needed. They should not be described as anti-inflammatory drugs. Consult NIA’s Alzheimer’s disease treatment overview for treatment categories and current guidance.

Clinical plausibility does not guarantee success. In its 2024 progress report, NIA noted that the A4 Phase 3 prevention trial enrolled more than 1,100 cognitively normal older adults with brain amyloid; solanezumab did not slow cognitive decline in that group. A4 studied an anti-amyloid approach, not an inflammation treatment.

Can an anti-inflammatory diet or supplement help?

Dietary studies are underway, but they do not establish a diet as an Alzheimer’s treatment. NIA describes research comparing a Mediterranean diet with a low-fat diet, as well as an ongoing anti-inflammatory diet study tailored to a multicultural population. NIA says more research is needed to understand how eating patterns affect insulin resistance and brain and cognitive health.

The reviewed official sources do not establish an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine, supplement, diagnostic kit, or other consumer product as a treatment for Alzheimer’s. Do not treat a product’s “anti-inflammatory” label as evidence that it prevents or modifies the disease. For personal treatment decisions, speak with a qualified clinician.

What should readers take away from the trial news?

  • Inflammation is a research target among several, alongside amyloid, tau, vascular, metabolic, and other processes.
  • Human trials show that candidates are being investigated; they do not show that those candidates are effective or approved.
  • Trial phase, participant group, and measured outcomes matter. Safety or tolerability studies are not proof of cognitive or daily-function benefit.
  • Diet studies are research, not established prevention or treatment advice.

For broader context, NIA’s Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research progress report describes a multi-mechanism portfolio that includes inflammation, metabolism, vascular factors, neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, APOE, amyloid, and tau.
