Yes—Modern World of Warcraft allows Horde and Alliance characters to play together in many activities. The most reliable route is a manually assembled, or “premade,” group for dungeons, raids and rated PvP. Cross-faction guilds are also supported, and Blizzard support documentation describes additional questing and queue options in Modern WoW.
The boundary is the outdoor world: opposite-faction guildmates remain Unfriendly to one another, and become Hostile in War Mode. Queue eligibility also depends on the activity, mode and current patch. WoW Classic follows substantially stricter rules, so an answer that is correct for the modern game may be wrong for Classic.
What “cross-faction” means in Modern WoW
Horde and Alliance are still separate factions, but Modern WoW can place their characters in the same cooperative group. Blizzard’s cross-faction instance design treats the relationship differently inside supported content than it does in the outdoor world.
Blizzard’s Development Preview: Cross-Faction Instances says that, after entering a dungeon, raid or rated PvP match, members become friendly and can assist one another in combat, trade loot, earn shared achievements and otherwise cooperate as same-faction players do. That instance-based change is the foundation for most practical Horde–Alliance play.

Cross-faction guilds extend the social connection beyond a single group. Blizzard’s guild announcement makes the limitation explicit: opposite-faction guildmates can play communally inside instances, but remain Unfriendly outdoors, or Hostile when War Mode is active.
Which activities support Horde–Alliance groups?
The clearest officially documented support is for premade groups. Blizzard’s cross-faction overview lists the following Modern WoW activities as available through the Premade Group Finder:
- Normal dungeons
- Heroic dungeons
- Mythic dungeons
- Mythic+ dungeons
- Raids
- Rated arena matches
- Rated battlegrounds
- Torghast
Blizzard Support’s Modern WoW summary also says players can quest together, queue for dungeons and battlegrounds, raid on normal and heroic difficulty, and join cross-realm, cross-faction guilds since The War Within pre-patch. Because queue rules are changed by patches and can differ between modes, treat the in-game tool as the final check for a particular activity rather than assuming that every random queue is cross-faction.

Inside a supported instance, faction labels no longer prevent normal cooperation. The documented benefits include combat assistance, loot trading and shared achievements. This is why a Horde character and an Alliance character can complete a premade Mythic+ run together even though their characters remain opposing factions in the world outside the dungeon.
Content that needs a live eligibility check
“Cross-faction is supported” does not mean every queue button is permanently available to both factions. Automated matchmaking, battleground types, special event modes and newly introduced activities may have separate rules. Open the current Group Finder or queue window, inspect the eligibility text and test with the exact characters and mode you intend to use.

Premade groups versus automated queues
The distinction between a premade group and an automated queue explains many failed attempts to play with a friend.

In Shadowlands patch 9.2.5, Blizzard specifically changed Premade Group Finder listings for Mythic dungeons, raids and rated arena or rated battlegrounds so applicants from either faction could apply. The listing leader retained the option to limit applications to the leader’s faction. That precedent is useful when diagnosing a listing that rejects your friend: the restriction may be intentional rather than a technical failure.

How to run a dungeon or raid with an opposite-faction friend
- Confirm the game version. Use a Modern WoW character, not a WoW Classic character. Classic has different party and instance rules.
- Choose content that supports a premade group. Normal, Heroic, Mythic and Mythic+ dungeons, raids and rated PvP are the clearest documented choices. Torghast is also listed in Blizzard’s cross-faction overview.
- Open the Group Finder. Create a listing under the relevant premade category, or apply to an existing listing with your friend.
- Check faction restrictions. A group leader can restrict a listing to same-faction applicants. If your application is blocked, find a listing that accepts both factions or create your own without that restriction.
- Invite the other character. Once both characters are in the group, use the normal preparation steps for that activity, including role selection and any mode-specific requirements.
- Enter the instance. The cross-faction cooperation rules take effect on entry. Members can assist one another in combat, trade eligible loot and earn shared achievements as documented by Blizzard.
- Use the current tool for any queue step. If the activity uses automated matchmaking after the group is formed, read the queue’s eligibility message. A successful premade invitation does not guarantee that every automated queue accepts the group.
This procedure avoids the most common assumption: that being able to see or invite a character means every subsequent queue and outdoor interaction will behave as same-faction play.
Can opposite-faction characters join the same guild?
Yes, Modern WoW supports cross-faction guilds. A Horde character and an Alliance character can belong to the same guild and use that guild as their shared social hub.
Guild membership does not erase faction identity. Blizzard states that opposite-faction guildmates are Unfriendly to each other in the outdoor world and Hostile in War Mode. The guild’s communal play is therefore strongest in instances, where the game temporarily makes the members friendly for cooperation.

What guild membership does not change
- It does not make the two characters permanently same-faction in outdoor zones.
- It does not remove War Mode hostility between the factions.
- It does not guarantee that every outdoor interaction, event or queue accepts both factions.
- It does not make WoW Classic use Modern WoW’s cross-faction guild rules.
Can Horde and Alliance quest together?
Blizzard Support’s Modern WoW summary says players can quest together. That means cross-faction cooperation is not limited solely to instanced dungeons and raids. However, outdoor faction relations still apply, so questing together should be understood as supported cooperation within the current quest and zone systems—not a conversion of both characters into one faction.
If a particular quest objective, NPC interaction or zone event refuses the second character, check the quest’s current requirements and the zone’s faction rules. A shared guild or a successful dungeon group is not evidence that every outdoor objective is cross-faction compatible.
Why can’t we queue for the same dungeon?
The activity is not using the supported premade path
Cross-faction support was explicitly built around Premade Group Finder listings for major dungeon, raid and rated-PvP categories. If you are trying to use a random or automated queue, its current rules may differ. Form a premade group first, then inspect the queue window for that exact mode.
The leader restricted the listing
Since the Shadowlands 9.2.5 cross-faction changes, a listing leader can limit applications to same-faction players. Ask the leader to remove that restriction or create a new listing yourself.
You are mixing Modern WoW and Classic
Characters on separate game versions cannot use Modern WoW’s cross-faction features. Confirm that both players launched the same version and are on compatible realms and characters.

The patch or mode changed the eligibility rule
Queue behavior is not a permanent promise across every patch. Blizzard’s support summary describes broad Modern WoW capability, while the detailed cross-faction announcements emphasize specific premade activities. A newly added mode, special event or queue can have narrower rules. The current in-game eligibility message is the authoritative check for that activity.
A normal group requirement is failing
Faction may not be the real cause. Character level, role, item-level, rating, difficulty or party-size requirements can reject a group after the faction check succeeds. Read the complete error message before changing faction or rebuilding the party.
Modern WoW versus WoW Classic
Do not transfer assumptions between the two game families. Blizzard Support describes materially tighter restrictions for Classic.

“Classic” also covers more than one ruleset over time, so identify the exact Classic version before planning a group. The safest expectation is that Classic will not provide the same cross-faction party, guild and instance flexibility as Modern WoW.
A practical decision guide
If your priority is a dungeon or raid together
Use Modern WoW, form a premade group and select a documented dungeon or raid category. This is the least ambiguous route and gives you the instance-based friendly status Blizzard describes.

If your priority is a shared guild
Create or join a Modern WoW cross-faction guild, but plan communal activities around instances. Treat outdoor travel, quest objectives and War Mode as faction-separated systems.
If your priority is a random queue
Check the live queue interface for the exact activity. If it rejects the party, switch to a supported premade listing rather than assuming the characters must change faction.
If you are playing Classic
Plan around Classic’s restrictions. Arena and battleground queues may be available in Classic Progression, while cross-realm dungeon and raid party access is not described as supported.
Before you invite your friend: a patch-aware checklist
- Both characters are in Modern WoW, or both are in the same Classic ruleset.
- The chosen activity appears in the current Premade Group Finder or queue interface.
- The listing does not enforce same-faction applications.
- Both characters meet the activity’s ordinary level, role, rating and equipment requirements.
- You understand whether the next step is a premade instance or an automated queue.
- You are prepared for Unfriendly outdoor relations and Hostile relations in War Mode.
- You will recheck the in-game tool after a major patch or when a new mode is introduced.
The Bottom Line
Modern WoW lets Horde and Alliance characters cooperate extensively—especially in premade dungeons, raids, rated PvP and cross-faction guilds—but they remain opposing factions outdoors. WoW Classic is considerably more restrictive, and queue rules can change by activity and patch.
