HandNotes describes a local workflow for reading a friend’s handwritten notes on that friend’s laptop: add the writer’s short forms, run a page through a recognizer, compare the output with a plain model, and make flashcards. The author’s proposed next step is to use corrected words from pages to fine-tune a small open handwriting model. That training is a plan, not a reported completed result, and the accessible project description gives no accuracy measurement or exact model details.

What HandNotes is trying to do

The project’s defining constraint is that the work should run on the friend’s laptop. Its described workflow combines a little writer-specific context—short forms—with recognition of a page, a comparison against a plain model, and flashcard creation. The author then proposes turning corrections into training examples so a model can become more specific to that person’s writing.

In practical terms, the idea is a feedback loop: a general recognizer produces a first transcript; a person corrects mistakes; those verified examples can then help adapt a model. The source description does not establish the app’s architecture, whether every stage currently runs on-device, or how well it reads the friend’s pages.

How writer-specific fine-tuning could help

Handwriting recognition depends on the writer, the page, and the task. A recognizer trained broadly may misread an individual’s letter shapes or abbreviations. Corrected examples give a model evidence about those patterns, but the benefit depends on how representative the examples are and how similar later pages are to the training material.

A 2022 study by Reul, Tomasek, Langhanki, and Springmann examined handwritten text in medieval German manuscripts. In that study, pretrained mixed models had an average character error rate of 6.22% when used without document-specific fine-tuning. The average fell to 3.27% after fine-tuning with two pages of transcribed ground truth, and to 1.65% with 32 pages. Those figures describe the study’s manuscripts, models, and evaluation; they are not expected results for HandNotes or modern personal notes. Read the study.

A 2024 paper on handwritten code offers a different illustration of how specific the task can be. Islam, Doumbouya, Manning, and Piech report reducing error from 30% to 5% with their method for handwritten-code recognition. Code has special challenges, including indentation and errors that can make a program fail, so those results are not a general handwriting benchmark or a prediction for ordinary notes. Read the paper.

Why corrections and human review still matter

Fine-tuning does not guarantee an error-free transcript. The medieval-manuscript study notes that even the output of fine-tuned models may still need manual correction. That is especially important if recognized text is turned into study material: an incorrect word can become a misleading flashcard unless someone checks it against the page.

Handwritten-code research makes the broader point in a high-stakes-for-the-task way: small transcription errors can change meaning, and inconsistent spacing can make indentation hard to recognize. Notes are not code, but the lesson carries over—recognition confidence should not be confused with correctness.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

  • Described: a local project focused on reading a friend’s handwritten notes, including short-form setup, a page-reading comparison, and flashcard creation.
  • Planned: extracting corrected words from pages and using them to fine-tune a small open handwriting model.
  • Not established in the accessible description: the exact model, its license, laptop hardware requirements, a completed custom training run, or a measured HandNotes accuracy figure.
  • Not proven by adjacent studies: that HandNotes will reach the manuscript or handwritten-code papers’ reported error rates.

A separate local handwriting project, GemmPen, also describes recognition followed by downstream feedback, but its author limits validation to one educational setting and says unusual handwriting and poor scan quality can hurt recognition. It is a cautionary example of the limits imposed by writing and image quality, not evidence that HandNotes uses the same technology or achieves the same results. See GemmPen’s project page.

What a useful evaluation would look like

To judge whether a writer-adapted model actually helps, compare it with the baseline on pages that were not used to train it. Keep the source pages and ground-truth transcriptions, check word or character errors, and note whether the system makes uncertain text easy to review. Also record the amount of correction work and whether training as well as recognition stays on the laptop; the project description does not report these measurements.

Testing only on the pages used for adaptation would not show how well the model handles new notes. Short forms, unusual names, page quality, and changes in the writer’s style can all affect the result, so a practical workflow needs a human correction step even if adaptation improves the first pass.
