No—hand sanitizer is made for hands, and that does not make it a safe or proven phone cleaner. For routine smudges, use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. If you want to disinfect a phone, use only a product and method its manufacturer permits for your exact model; sanitizer gel is not automatically interchangeable with an approved wipe.
Why hand sanitizer advice for hands does not apply to phones
The CDC recommends hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol for cleaning your hands when soap and water are unavailable. That threshold is for hand hygiene, not a phone surface, and it does not establish that sanitizer gel is suitable for a phone or will disinfect it reliably. The CDC separately advises following the manufacturer’s instructions for electronic devices, including phones and touch screens: CDC guidance on cleaning and disinfecting your home and CDC hand-sanitizer guidance.
Phone makers specify which materials and methods are acceptable for particular devices. A product suitable for one phone may not be approved for another, and a gel, a wipe, and a solution applied to a cloth are not interchangeable just because they contain alcohol.

Power the phone down and disconnect cables before cleaning. Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth and wipe gently. Remove the case or accessories if the maker’s instructions call for it. Samsung says a small amount of distilled water on a soft microfiber cloth can help with stubborn dirt; do not spray or pour liquid onto the phone. Keep moisture away from openings, and never submerge the device. See Samsung’s Galaxy cleaning guidance.

- Turn the phone off and unplug any cable.
- Check the maker’s instructions for your model, including whether to remove its case or accessories.
- Gently wipe the exterior with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
- If the maker permits a damp cloth for stubborn dirt, use only the specified liquid and keep it away from ports, speakers, and other openings.
- Let the phone dry fully before reconnecting it or powering it on.
If you want to disinfect, check the exact model’s approved method
Apple iPhone guidance
Apple permits gently wiping the exterior surfaces of iPhone with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, a 75% ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, subject to its precautions. Apple advises checking the wipe’s expiry, avoiding bleach and hydrogen peroxide, keeping moisture out of openings, and not submerging the phone. It also recommends wiping afterward with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. These are Apple instructions for iPhone—not a general rule for every phone. Read Apple’s iPhone cleaning instructions.
Samsung Galaxy guidance
Samsung’s US guidance permits certain disinfectants, including solutions with more than 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and a specified hypochlorous-acid solution. It says to apply the disinfectant carefully to a microfiber cloth, not directly to the device. Check the current instructions for your exact model and the specific product before using it: Samsung’s Galaxy cleaning guidance. Samsung regional instructions also warn that frequent, long-term alcohol exposure may affect water resistance, so do not assume one region’s directions cover every device or market.

What can go wrong with sanitizer or other cleaners?
- Liquid can enter openings. Applying gel or liquid directly risks getting moisture into ports, speakers, or other openings. Do not spray the device or submerge it.
- Repeated cleaning can wear coatings. Apple says an iPhone’s fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating wears over time during normal use; cleaning products and abrasive materials may further diminish it or scratch the phone.
- Water resistance is not chemical resistance. A water-resistance rating does not mean a phone can be soaked, exposed to arbitrary cleaning products, or cleaned without regard to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- The product may not match the approved method. Ingredient, concentration, application method, and device model matter. A hand sanitizer’s alcohol percentage alone does not show that it is safe or effective for a phone.
