Usually, no—not automatically. A separate Googlebook computer does not gain permission to browse your Mac’s storage or use its built-in camera merely because both devices are on the same network. macOS requires explicit consent for protected folders, and Google’s published camera and local-network controls describe ChromeOS and Chrome browser contexts, not access to Mac host hardware. Google’s documentation also does not establish a supported way to install Googlebook OS on a Mac or run it as a guest with automatic access to macOS resources.
Start with the setup you mean
“Googlebook OS on a Mac” can describe very different arrangements. The answer changes depending on whether Googlebook is a separate laptop, an operating system replacing macOS, or a virtual machine running while macOS remains the host.
A separate Googlebook laptop
In this arrangement, Googlebook runs on its own hardware. Your Mac is another computer on the same Wi-Fi, Ethernet network, or internet connection. Network reachability does not create a macOS login, file-sharing credential, camera permission, or other authority on the Mac. Access exists only if you deliberately configure a sharing or transfer path and authenticate to it.

The official Google material available for this topic does not document Googlebook OS as a supported Mac installation. Google’s Mac installation instructions concern ChromeOS Flex, a different operating system. ChromeOS Flex support therefore cannot be used as proof that Googlebook OS can be installed on a Mac.

A virtual machine with macOS as host
The cited documentation does not establish a supported Googlebook virtual-machine configuration on a Mac, nor does it describe automatic passthrough of the Mac’s files, built-in camera, or other host devices. Any access in such an arrangement would depend on the virtualization software, the devices you explicitly attach, and macOS permissions. Treat claims that Googlebook automatically sees the host as unverified unless they are backed by documentation for the exact software and version.
Can Googlebook OS read files stored on your Mac?
A separate Googlebook device cannot read a Mac’s filesystem simply by being nearby or connected to the same network. You must expose files through a mechanism such as an explicitly configured share, a transfer service, removable media, or another application, and the Mac must authorize that operation.
macOS protects important folders with consent controls
Apple says that, in macOS 10.15 and later, the system requires user consent before an app can access Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes. Apple describes the purpose this way: “In macOS 10.15 or later, this model is enforced by the system to help ensure that all apps have obtained user consent before accessing files in Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive and network volumes.”
For apps that need broader storage access, Apple says macOS 10.13 and later require an explicit full-storage authorization. On macOS 13 and later, the relevant controls are in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy; on macOS 12 and earlier, Apple places them in System Preferences. These controls govern applications running under macOS. They do not grant an unrelated computer permission to inspect the Mac.
What a file share changes
If you intentionally share a folder or run a transfer service, the remote Googlebook application may be able to list or copy only what that service exposes and what your credentials permit. That is an application-level arrangement, not a bypass of macOS’s protection model. A share can be read-only or writable, limited to selected folders, and restricted to particular accounts. Disable it when you no longer need it and use a strong, unique password for any account that can reach it.

The same distinction applies to cloud synchronization or a USB transfer: the files become available because you selected a transfer channel, not because Googlebook has inherent Mac storage privileges.
FileVault protects the underlying volume
Apple’s FileVault documentation says the Mac’s storage remains encrypted and protected from unauthorized access without valid login credentials or a recovery key, even if the physical storage is removed and connected to another computer. That protects data at rest. It does not decide what happens after you intentionally share a folder, log in to a service, or attach a device to a virtual machine.
Can Googlebook OS use your Mac’s built-in camera?
There is no documented basis for saying that a separate Googlebook can activate a Mac’s built-in camera. The Googlebook computer has its own camera hardware; a Mac’s camera belongs to the Mac unless you deliberately make it available through a supported remote or virtual-device mechanism.
Camera controls documented for Chrome
Google documents camera-input policies for ChromeOS devices and for the Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux. In those contexts, users are prompted for video-capture access by default for URLs that are not covered by an administrator’s allowlist. Administrators can also disable camera input except for specifically allowed URLs.
Those policies explain how a Chrome or ChromeOS context asks for and restricts camera input. They do not prove that Googlebook OS can reach a Mac host camera, and they do not describe a Mac-hosted Googlebook installation.

Separate device versus virtualized camera
On a separate Googlebook, a website or app requesting video normally addresses the Googlebook’s own camera, subject to that device’s permissions and policy. A camera attached to, or passed through to, a virtualized environment is a different case. Availability depends on whether the virtualization layer supports that device, whether macOS allows the host application to use it, and whether the guest operating system receives it. The available Google documentation does not define those Googlebook-on-Mac details.
Do not infer camera access from a browser permission prompt alone. A prompt proves that a browser context is requesting a camera device; it does not identify whether the device is the Mac’s built-in camera, a USB camera, or hardware belonging to another computer.
Does network access let Googlebook OS reach the Mac?
Network access is a transport capability, not a blanket permission. A Googlebook may reach the internet, discover a Mac on a local network, or connect to a service listening on the Mac. None of those facts, by themselves, authorize reading local files or switching on the camera.
Local-network and loopback policies
Google’s Chrome Enterprise documentation describes policies for local-network and loopback requests in Chrome and ChromeOS. Administrators can use allow and block lists and restrict requests to local endpoints. These settings control which browser requests are permitted in the supported Chrome contexts; they do not document the network topology of an unsupported Googlebook-on-Mac installation.
What must exist before a network connection becomes useful
For a Googlebook to obtain data from a Mac over the network, all of the following must line up:

- A reachable service: the Mac must be running a sharing, transfer, web, or other service that accepts connections.
- An allowed path: firewalls, router isolation, VPN rules, and browser or platform policies must permit the connection.
- Authentication: the service must accept valid credentials, a pairing code, or another authorization method.
- Scope: the service determines which files, commands, or devices are exposed; network reachability does not expand that scope.
If any one of these is missing, a Googlebook can still be online while being unable to access anything hosted on the Mac.
What Googlebook’s extension documentation actually establishes
Google’s extension guidance for Googlebook identifies platform boundaries rather than Mac-host integration. It notes that some ChromeOS-only APIs are unsupported and that attempts to establish native-messaging connections fail in the documented cases. That is useful evidence about what an extension can expect inside Googlebook OS, but it is not a statement that the operating system can inspect a macOS host.
An extension’s ability to make web requests, use a supported API, or ask for browser permissions should therefore be evaluated separately from host-resource access. An API limitation can prevent an extension from performing an action; an available network request still does not grant filesystem or camera privileges on another computer.

How to check what is actually exposed
If you are auditing a real setup, work from the Mac outward rather than assuming that a network connection equals access.

- Identify the platform. Confirm whether Googlebook is a separate device, a replacement operating system, or a virtual machine. Do not substitute ChromeOS Flex documentation for Googlebook OS documentation.
- List deliberate sharing paths. On the Mac, inventory enabled file-sharing, remote-access, synchronization, transfer, and streaming services. Remove any service you do not recognize or need.
- Review macOS privacy grants. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy on macOS 13 or later, or the corresponding System Preferences pane on macOS 12 and earlier. Check protected-folder and full-storage permissions for applications that could handle incoming connections.
- Check camera permissions. Review which macOS apps have camera access and whether a browser or conferencing app is currently using it. A Googlebook on the network should not appear in this list unless a Mac application is acting as an intermediary.
- Inspect accounts and credentials. Change passwords for any sharing account you no longer trust, remove unused users, and revoke old pairing tokens or sessions.
- Check firewall and router boundaries. Confirm whether the Mac is reachable from the Googlebook’s network segment and which ports or services are exposed. A successful ping or web connection does not demonstrate file access.
- Test the narrowest operation. If you intentionally configured a share, test access to one non-sensitive folder with a limited account. Confirm whether the account can only read, or can also create, modify, and delete files.
- Protect the host at rest. Keep FileVault enabled and store the recovery key securely. Encryption protects the physical volume if the Mac or its storage is lost; it does not replace careful configuration of active sharing services.
Common misunderstandings
“Same Wi-Fi means full access.”
No. The devices can exchange traffic only where a service is listening and policy allows it. File permissions and credentials remain separate controls.

“A camera prompt means the Mac camera is available to Googlebook.”
No. The prompt belongs to a particular browser or operating-system context and may refer to that device’s own camera. The documented policies do not establish host-camera passthrough.
“ChromeOS Flex for Mac proves Googlebook runs on Mac.”
No. ChromeOS Flex and Googlebook are different products. Instructions for one cannot be treated as compatibility evidence for the other.
“An extension can use native messaging to reach macOS.”
The cited Googlebook extension guidance describes native-messaging connection attempts that fail in the relevant unsupported cases. It does not provide a general bridge to macOS files, devices, or services.

A Googlebook device does not receive automatic access to your Mac’s files or built-in camera, and network connectivity alone grants neither. macOS protects sensitive folders through consent and full-storage controls, while camera and local-network policies documented by Google apply to ChromeOS and Chrome contexts.
