Gazelle Wind Power says its new platform for turbines rated at 18 MW or more could reduce capital expenditure by 44% and levelized cost of energy by 52% compared with the semi-submersible benchmark designs it assessed. Those are preliminary company estimates—not independently verified savings or results from an operating wind farm. The design’s main innovation is its floating platform and mooring system, not a new turbine rotor or generator.

What Gazelle announced

In a September 21, 2026 announcement, Gazelle Wind Power described a revised floating platform intended to support offshore wind turbines rated at 18 MW or more. Its headline cost figures compare the design with semi-submersible benchmarks assessed in the company’s preliminary costing exercise.

The announcement reports an estimated 44% reduction in capital expenditure (CAPEX) and 52% reduction in levelized cost of energy (LCOE). CAPEX is the upfront project investment; LCOE is a modeled cost per unit of electricity over a project’s lifetime. These percentages apply to Gazelle’s comparison, not to every floating-wind platform, site, or project. Gazelle’s announcement and independent coverage by Renewables Now both describe the figures as preliminary estimates; the coverage does not independently validate the underlying cost model.

How the platform and mooring system are meant to work

Gazelle describes a central counterweight connected to three Articulated Mooring Frames (AMFs), which link the platform to near-vertical mooring lines. The company says this arrangement supplies passive restoring force as wind, waves, and currents move the structure, without an active ballast system in the announced configuration.

The updated design also includes a tripod support structure, upgraded AMFs, and revised hull geometry. Gazelle attributes improved hydrodynamic performance, mooring flexibility, load distribution, reduced structural weight, and greater damage tolerance to these changes. These are company descriptions of the design and its intended performance, not independently established operating results. The technology overview describes Gazelle’s broader central-counterweight and tripodal-arm concept; its earlier comparisons should not be conflated with the September 2026 cost estimates.

What the reported cost reductions do—and do not—show

The headline combines two different modeled measures: Gazelle estimates CAPEX is 44% lower and LCOE 52% lower than its assessed semi-submersible benchmarks. A lower modeled LCOE does not mean the same percentage reduction in every project’s electricity cost, and the announcement does not establish that either saving has been achieved in commercial operation.

Site and design assumptions matter in floating-wind comparisons. A 2026 peer-reviewed study by Rohrer, Bachynski-Polić, and Hegseth optimized semi-submersible designs for three hypothetical locations and reported changes in its cost function of +16%, −16%, and −32% across different design bases. The authors found that environmental conditions and design constraints materially affected optimized designs. This is not a direct comparison with Gazelle; it illustrates why a cost percentage should be read alongside the modeled site and design basis. The study in Marine Structures was published January 30, 2026.

What has been tested, and what remains to be demonstrated

Gazelle reports that global performance simulations covered survival and power-production conditions. In those simulations, it says roll and pitch remained below 5 degrees and tower accelerations and tower-base loads stayed within project design criteria. The company also says it and its client completed a basin-test campaign to compare physical measurements with the numerical model and support further calibration.

Simulations and basin tests are not evidence of performance at a commercial wind farm. Gazelle describes its Nau Azul project off Aguçadoura, Portugal as a demonstration intended to validate its platform in real-world conditions. That is a planned validation step, not proof that the new 18 MW+ design has already delivered the estimated savings at sea.

  • Realistic Wind Turbine Model: This wind turbine model toy mimics a real wind turbine to scale, and the most interesting thing is that its blades can also turn.
  • 21.65inch Large Size Model: Compared to other ordinary wind turbine models, this wind turbine model has a large size, which can be installed up to 55cm/ 21.65inch.
  • Wind-up Wind Turbine: This windmill toy adopts wind-up design that enables the blades turn automatically after it gets winded up. To wind it up, we just need to turn its blades clockwise for several rounds.
  • Learn While Playing: This model of a wind turbine is not only a toy, but also a scientific and educational tool. It can guide children to understand the role of wind and inertia more intuitively, and cultivate children's interest in science.
  • Suitable for Multiple Occasions: Kids can play with this windmill toy on their own or DIY transform it in the company of their parents. Teachers can also use it as an improvised teaching tool in the classroom.

There is also historical certification context, but it applies to an earlier concept: Gazelle announced in 2021 that DNV had issued a Statement of Feasibility for its earlier hybrid floating platform. That announcement does not establish that DNV verified the 2026 cost estimates or that the newly announced configuration has the same certification status. Gazelle’s 2021 announcement concerns that earlier concept.

How to assess this against other floating-platform concepts

Floating wind includes semi-submersible, spar, and tension-leg platform (TLP) concepts. Gazelle’s announced cost comparison is against assessed semi-submersible benchmarks; it does not provide a complete head-to-head comparison with spar or TLP designs. A meaningful comparison would need consistent assumptions across the following factors:

  • Platform and mooring scope: structural weight, mooring arrangement, installation, and maintenance assumptions.
  • Cost measure: upfront CAPEX versus modeled lifetime LCOE, with assumptions disclosed separately.
  • Evidence stage: simulations, basin testing, or performance from an operating project.

Until the benchmark and model details are available, the strongest supported conclusion is limited: Gazelle reports a substantial preliminary modeled advantage over the semi-submersible designs it assessed, while the public announcement does not show whether that advantage will hold across other sites or be realized in operation.
