Usually, a Firefox update does not erase your userChrome.css or userContent.css file, but it can make the rules stop working or leave the interface looking broken. Firefox’s internal HTML/XUL elements and styles can change between releases, so a selector that worked yesterday may no longer match. Mozilla describes this as a compatibility risk, not routine deletion of customization files. Before editing the interface, understand which methods are supported, how to test a change safely, and how to recover if an update exposes a fragile rule.
What a Firefox update can—and cannot—remove
Firefox has several customization layers. Toolbar controls, settings, themes and extensions are the normal options for changing appearance or behavior. Advanced users can also edit about:config preferences or load CSS files from the browser profile. Those advanced methods reach parts of Firefox that are not covered by the ordinary customization interface.
Mozilla’s current guidance says future updates may affect advanced customizations. Its support article states: “Firefox is a work in progress and, to allow for continuous innovation, Mozilla cannot guarantee that future updates won’t impact these customizations.” The statement describes a change in behavior or compatibility; it does not say that a normal update routinely deletes files from your profile.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If your tabs, toolbar, colors or sidebars changed after an update, first ask whether a CSS rule stopped matching or began applying to a different element. Do not assume the update removed the file until you inspect the profile and test with custom rules disabled.

How Firefox interface customization works
Built-in controls, themes and extensions
Firefox’s Customize Toolbar screen can add, remove and rearrange supported toolbar items. Settings expose documented preferences, while themes change the browser’s visual palette. Extensions can add features or alter pages without requiring you to target Firefox’s private interface markup. These routes are intended for general users and are easier to recover when Firefox changes its implementation.
userChrome.css and userContent.css
userChrome.css is a user-created stylesheet for Firefox’s own interface (“chrome”), such as toolbars, tab strips, menus and panels. It can change colors, dimensions, visibility and placement. userContent.css applies rules to web content and selected internal pages. Both files live in a chrome folder inside the active Firefox profile.
Firefox loads these styles only when the toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets preference is enabled. Mozilla’s contributor documentation says this preference defaults to false; a fresh profile therefore ignores the files until you deliberately turn it on in about:config.

Why an update can break a working stylesheet
Selectors depend on private markup
Firefox’s interface is built with web-like HTML and XUL elements and styled with CSS. A rule might target an element ID, an attribute, a class name, a nesting relationship or a pseudo-element. When Firefox changes that markup, any of those targets can be renamed, moved, removed or assigned a different meaning.
What failure looks like
- No visible effect: the selector no longer matches, so the customization appears to vanish while the file remains present.
- Partial effect: some controls still match but others use new markup, producing an inconsistent layout.
- Unexpected targeting: a broad selector matches a newly introduced element, hiding or recoloring the wrong control.
- Severe interface problems: overlapping toolbars, missing buttons or unusable menus can result when a rule conflicts with a structural change.
Mozilla’s contributor guide warns that users should expect some custom rules to stop working and that extreme cases may cause serious user-interface issues. The cited guidance provides no failure percentage or rate, so there is no evidence-based number for how often updates cause problems.
Which customization method has the greatest update risk?

The table describes relative exposure, not a guarantee. A maintained extension can still stop working, and a simple CSS rule can survive many releases before an interface redesign changes its target.
Diagnose a changed interface without deleting anything
1. Confirm that custom rules are a plausible cause
Look for a userChrome.css or userContent.css file in the active profile’s chrome folder. The presence of a file does not prove that Firefox loaded it: the legacy stylesheet preference must also be enabled. Note which release was installed and which visual or functional change appeared afterward, so you can test one cause at a time.

2. Use Troubleshoot Mode as a reversible test
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables customizations such as user styles and many add-ons. Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode using the Help menu’s troubleshooting option, then inspect the same toolbar, tabs or menus that looked wrong. If the problem disappears, a custom rule or extension is implicated; if it remains, the update or another setting may be responsible.
This test does not show that an update deleted a CSS file. It only compares Firefox with the suspect customizations inactive. Exit Troubleshoot Mode and Firefox returns to its normal configuration, allowing you to make a targeted change rather than wiping the profile.
Disable or remove a stylesheet selectively
When Troubleshoot Mode points to custom CSS, use the smallest change that restores a usable interface. Mozilla’s advanced-customization guidance describes the following approach:

- Open the Configuration Editor. Enter
about:configin the address bar and acknowledge the warning page. - Find the stylesheet preference. Search for
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets. - Reset it to
false. Use the reset control for that preference. With the preference false, Firefox stops loading profile CSS on the next startup. - Restart Firefox. Check whether the interface is usable without the custom rules.
- Keep the file for analysis or rename it. In the active profile’s
chromefolder, rename the relevant file (for example, add.disabled) or move it to a safe backup location. Renaming is reversible and lets you restore the file after updating selectors. - Isolate rules if needed. If you want to retain most of the design, re-enable the preference only after removing or commenting out the rule that causes the failure, then test changes in small groups.
The same profile-folder method applies when the problem is in userContent.css. If you are unsure which file or rule is responsible, leave both files disabled while you restore the interface, then test them one at a time.

Why Refresh Firefox is not the same as disabling CSS
Refresh Firefox is a broad reset, not a targeted stylesheet switch. Mozilla warns that Refresh removes add-ons and other customizations, including extension data and preference configurations. Accessibility customizations may also need to be restored afterward.
Use Refresh only when you intentionally want a largely clean Firefox profile or when narrower troubleshooting has failed. Before choosing it, export or record extension settings, save any accessibility adjustments, and retain copies of CSS files you may want later. If the only symptom is a broken toolbar rule, resetting toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets and renaming the CSS file avoids the collateral changes caused by Refresh.
Safer choices before you change Firefox’s UI
Match the tool to the scope of the change
- Use Customize Toolbar when you only need a different button arrangement.
- Use a documented setting when Firefox already exposes the behavior you want.
- Use a theme for color and general appearance rather than targeting individual internal nodes.
- Use an extension when a maintained add-on provides the feature and you can accept its compatibility lifecycle.
- Reserve
userChrome.css,userContent.cssand low-level preferences for changes unavailable through supported controls.
Keep a recoverable copy
Save a copy of every stylesheet before changing it and record the Firefox version with that copy. Keep a short note explaining what each rule targets. This is practical risk management, not an Mozilla guarantee: the official pages establish that future updates can affect selectors, while a personal backup gives you a way to compare old and new markup and roll back quickly.

Large collections of copied snippets make failures difficult to diagnose. Comment out a single block, restart Firefox and test the affected control. Small, named sections make it possible to identify the selector that needs revision after an interface change.

What to expect after a Firefox redesign
An update may leave your files untouched while changing the elements those files reference. A previously hidden button can reappear, a tab rule can stop applying, or a broad selector can affect a new panel. Treat each major visual change as a compatibility check: launch with custom rules disabled, verify core navigation, then reintroduce only the styles you still need.
Mozilla’s official explanations are explicit about the limits of this technique. The Contributors guide on Firefox advanced customization with CSS (updated April 1, 2025) and Firefox advanced customization and configuration options (updated September 12, 2026) both describe custom CSS and Configuration Editor changes as advanced, unsupported approaches whose behavior can change as Firefox evolves.
A practical decision path
- Need a supported visual adjustment? Start with toolbar customization, settings or a theme.
- Need a feature supplied by an add-on? Check the extension’s compatibility and disable it first if an update introduced a conflict.
- Need an element-level change unavailable elsewhere? Use CSS only after saving a copy and accepting that selectors may require maintenance.
- Something broke after updating? Test in Troubleshoot Mode before editing files.
- Confirmed CSS is involved? Reset the stylesheet preference to false or rename the file, then restore rules incrementally.
- Want every customization removed? Consider Refresh Firefox, but only after accounting for its removal of add-ons, extension data and preference configurations.
Bottom line for anyone editing Firefox’s interface
Firefox updates can break the effect of interface customizations, especially rules tied to private UI markup. The evidence supports describing this as compatibility breakage—not as routine deletion of userChrome.css or userContent.css. Prefer supported controls when they meet your goal, keep reversible copies of advanced styles, and diagnose with Troubleshoot Mode before making a broad reset.
