Sometimes. A mask, sunglasses, or heavy makeup can reduce facial-recognition accuracy, but none is a dependable on/off switch. The result depends on the algorithm, the camera image, how much of the face is covered or altered, lighting and image quality, and whether the stored reference photo shows the same appearance. Automated matching studies and human-vision experiments measure different tasks, so their percentages cannot be directly combined.
What “identify” means in facial recognition
Facial-recognition systems do not all perform the same job. In one-to-one verification, a system compares a probe image with the photo associated with a claimed identity—for example, checking whether a person matches an account photo. In one-to-many identification, it searches a gallery of faces for possible matches. The widely cited mask figures from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) concern one-to-one verification, not a universal probability of being recognized by every camera or a prediction for one-to-many surveillance.
A system can also be configured with different thresholds. Lowering a threshold may accept more genuine users but create more false matches; raising it can reject more genuine users while reducing some false matches. Consequently, “identified” is not a single technical outcome. A system might still produce a candidate list even when it cannot confidently verify a claimed identity.

Can a mask stop facial recognition?
What NIST measured in 2020
In a 2020 NIST evaluation, the best-performing 89 commercial algorithms had error rates from 5% to 50% when matching digitally masked images of a person against that person’s unmasked photograph. In the same test setup, the most accurate algorithms had an unmasked failure-to-authenticate rate of about 0.3%. Those numbers show how strongly a mask can affect a particular verification benchmark; they are not the chance that an individual will evade every deployed system.

NIST digitally applied the masks to existing photographs. The test therefore controlled the covering more tightly than a mask worn in daily life. Mask shape and how far the covering extended over the nose affected the result. More coverage generally made matching harder, but the algorithms did not all respond in the same way.
Later algorithms improved, but not uniformly
NIST’s December 2020 account added 65 newly submitted algorithms, bringing the cumulative total to 152. Some newer submissions reduced error rates by as much as a factor of 10 compared with pre-pandemic versions. The test still used digitally simulated masks, and performance continued to vary substantially between algorithms. NIST advised organizations to evaluate the software they actually deploy under their own conditions, ideally with real physical masks rather than only digital overlays.
NIST’s specific one-to-one mask benchmark was discontinued in February 2024; its posted results were last updated in March 2024. Treat those results as dated benchmark context, not a live guarantee for a current product, camera network, or access-control system.
Real masks are more complicated than digital overlays
A separate study evaluated three deep face models with the Real World Occluded Faces dataset. The dataset contains 6,421 neutral images, 4,627 sunglasses images, and 678 masked images collected from public-figure photographs. The authors reported significant performance declines on real-world occlusions and found that synthetic obstructions were less challenging than real ones. Real coverings vary in texture, position, folds, shadows, and the amount of skin they hide, so a clean digital rectangle does not represent every camera view.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: a mask can make automated verification substantially less reliable, especially when the enrollment image is uncovered, but newer systems may recover some performance and another system may behave differently. A mask should not be described as making someone universally unrecognizable.
Do sunglasses stop facial recognition?
Sunglasses hide the eye and eyebrow region, which carries useful information for both algorithms and human observers. Dark lenses can also create reflections, reduce visible texture, and alter the apparent shape of the upper face. Those effects may lower match confidence, yet they do not create a guaranteed barrier.
The Real World Occluded Faces study found significant degradation for its tested models on actual sunglasses images. Because the result came from three models and a defined dataset, it should not be transferred as a percentage for every commercial system. Camera angle, lens tint, frame shape, focus, and whether the reference image also shows glasses can all change the outcome.

Human observers are affected as well. A 2023 face-memory study compared uncovered faces with sunglasses covering the eyes and eyebrows and surgical masks covering the lower face. In that experiment, sunglasses produced larger reductions in identification sensitivity than masks. This was a test of human memory, not an automated-system benchmark; a person looking at a photo and a software model calculating a similarity score are different measurement problems.

Can heavy makeup fool facial recognition?
Makeup can change the apparent color, contrast, contours, and relative prominence of facial features. A 2020 paper by Rathgeb, Drozdowski, and Busch examined cosmetics as makeup presentation attacks—attempts to alter appearance to resemble a target—and evaluated a proposed detection method using the MIFS database. The authors describe cosmetics as capable of substantially changing appearance and negatively affecting recognition decisions.
That finding supports a narrower conclusion than “heavy makeup defeats facial recognition.” The study addresses attack scenarios and a detection technique, not a dependable consumer routine that prevents identification. Makeup may lower confidence in one image while leaving enough information for another system, camera angle, or reference photo to produce a match. Products, application style, skin texture, lighting, and algorithm training all matter.
There is no evidence here for recommending a particular cosmetic pattern, color, or placement as a reliable way to evade recognition. Cosmetic changes can also trigger fraud or security review when a system detects an unusual mismatch between a live image and an enrolled photo.
Automated systems and people do not fail in the same way
| Question | Automated face matching | Human face memory |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence discussed here | NIST mask evaluations and the Real World Occluded Faces study | A 2023 face-memory experiment with 135 participants in Experiment 1 |
| Typical task | Usually a calculated similarity or one-to-one verification decision | Learning a face and later deciding whether a viewed face is the same person |
| Effect of masks | Can raise verification errors; magnitude differs by algorithm and image setup | Can reduce identification sensitivity, particularly when appearance changes between learning and testing |
| Effect of sunglasses | Real-world sunglasses caused significant declines for the tested models | Produced larger sensitivity reductions than masks in that experiment |
The 2023 study tested performance at three time points between June 2020 and July 2021 and reported no time-point effect on the measures it examined. Its result still cannot be converted into an accuracy claim for a phone, border checkpoint, retail camera, or police system.

Why the same disguise works differently from one system to another
- Reference-image mismatch: A masked probe compared with an uncovered enrollment photo is a harder comparison than two images showing similar appearance. NIST’s later account and the human-memory study both emphasize the importance of whether the learning or reference image matches the later appearance.
- Coverage and location: Covering the nose and more of the lower face increased difficulty in NIST’s mask setup. Sunglasses remove information around the eyes and eyebrows. The exact boundary matters more than the label “mask” or “glasses.”
- Image quality: Blur, low light, glare, compression, pose, and camera distance can remove information independently of a disguise. A high-resolution, well-lit image may preserve features that a dim side-angle image does not.
- Algorithm design and threshold: Systems are trained differently and make different trade-offs between false accepts and false rejects. An update can improve masked performance without making every deployment equally robust.
- Synthetic versus real occlusion: Digital overlays usually have consistent edges and textures. Worn masks and glasses introduce folds, shadows, reflections, and irregular placement that can be more difficult for a model.
- Task and gallery size: One-to-one verification has a claimed identity to test. One-to-many searching compares a probe against a gallery and may return ranked candidates even when no match is certain. A benchmark for one task should not be quoted as a rate for the other.
What this means in everyday situations
Phone or app sign-in
A device that asks you to look at the camera is normally performing verification against an enrolled image, often with additional liveness checks. A mask or sunglasses may cause a rejection and request a second factor, but a system that has been updated for occlusions may still verify you. If access matters, keep the service’s approved fallback—such as a passcode or security key—available rather than relying on a disguise.
Building, workplace, or event access
Access-control operators choose their own cameras, thresholds, enrollment practices, and fallback procedures. Ask whether the system accepts a badge, PIN, or staffed identity check when your appearance differs. Do not assume that a result measured on a vendor’s digital test set predicts the reader at a specific doorway.
Public-camera or investigative identification
A public-camera search is not the same as one-to-one authentication. It may use a gallery, produce several candidates, or require a human review step. Masks, glasses, and cosmetics can reduce the available evidence, but image quality, camera placement, and the size and quality of the gallery also influence the result. No item discussed here guarantees that a person will not be detected or investigated.
Privacy steps that do not depend on a disguise
If your concern is biometric privacy rather than access to a particular device, focus on the organization operating the system:

- Ask what purpose the facial image or biometric template serves, how long it is retained, and who can access it.
- Ask whether a non-biometric option—badge, PIN, passcode, or staffed check—is available and whether choosing it affects access.
- Read the service’s consent, deletion, and appeal procedures before enrolling.
- For workplaces, venues, or services, request the written policy governing sharing with contractors or law enforcement.
- Report a suspected false match promptly and preserve the date, location, and transaction details so the operator can investigate.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s historical guidance, Facing Facts: Best Practices for Common Uses of Facial Recognition Technologies, provides official context on responsible use and privacy practices. It does not establish the performance of any current product.
Bottom line: masks, sunglasses, and makeup are variables—not guarantees
Masks can raise automated matching errors dramatically: NIST recorded 5%–50% errors among the best of 89 algorithms in a digitally masked, one-to-one test, while later submissions improved some results. Real sunglasses and masks still degraded the models evaluated on real-world images. Heavy makeup can alter recognition decisions and is studied as a presentation attack, but no reliable consumer concealment method follows from that work. Human observers are also affected, with sunglasses producing a larger sensitivity reduction than masks in one 2023 experiment.
The defensible conclusion is that these coverings and appearance changes can make identification harder under particular conditions. They do not promise anonymity, and historical benchmark percentages should never be treated as a current guarantee for a specific camera system.
