Yes. A drone can be flown indoors without GPS. In fact, GPS is normally unusable indoors and should be disabled. Manual flight can use the pilot’s commands plus the drone’s inertial and altitude sensors; stable hovering, position hold and autonomous routes require another source of movement or position data, such as optical flow, visual-inertial odometry, motion capture, UWB or LiDAR.

Why GPS usually fails indoors

Satellite navigation signals are extremely weak by the time they reach the ground. Roofs, walls and metal structures attenuate them, while reflections from windows and walls create multipath: the receiver sees delayed copies of a signal and may calculate a plausible-looking but incorrect position.

ArduPilot’s official guidance is unambiguous: “GPS does not work indoors and needs to be disabled (no exceptions).” A receiver can show satellites or a low reported dilution-of-precision value while its position drifts many metres, or even thousands of metres, because of multipath. A satellite count is therefore not proof that an indoor position estimate is safe to use.

Disable GPS use in the flight controller rather than merely ignoring the map display. If the estimator is allowed to fuse a bad indoor GPS solution, it can fight the pilot, move the aircraft unexpectedly or trigger a failsafe based on a position that does not exist.

What a drone can do without GPS

Manual attitude flight

The simplest arrangement uses the pilot’s commands, gyroscopes and accelerometers. The flight controller can keep the aircraft level or hold an attitude, and a barometer or range sensor can help with altitude. When the pilot releases the sticks, the drone does not necessarily stay over the same point: it can drift with air movement, sensor bias and small control errors.

Assisted hovering and position hold

To hold a location, the estimator needs a measurement of horizontal movement or position. An optical-flow camera can measure motion across the floor; a visual-inertial system can estimate local three-dimensional movement; external systems can provide a tracked pose. The flight controller fuses that data with inertial measurements, usually through an extended Kalman filter (EKF) or a comparable estimator.

Autonomous indoor flight

Waypoints, automatic returns and similar functions need a reliable coordinate frame. That frame may be local rather than latitude/longitude, but the flight controller still needs a valid position estimate and a configured origin. A sensor that merely reports altitude or attitude cannot by itself support an autonomous route.

Indoor navigation alternatives to GPS

Method What the flight controller receives Best fit Main requirements and limitations
Optical flow plus range sensor Two-dimensional ground velocity, with distance-to-ground used to scale the motion Low-cost hover and slow movement in small indoor spaces Textured, illuminated floor; usable range-sensor coverage; performance degrades over blank, shiny or rapidly changing surfaces
Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) Local three-dimensional pose and velocity from cameras combined with IMU data Indoor vehicles that need local 3D movement without installed anchors Camera visibility, scene texture, adequate lighting, processing power and careful calibration; drift or feature loss can occur
Motion capture externally measured 3D pose in a local coordinate frame Research labs, test halls and other controlled spaces Installed cameras or tracking sensors, calibrated coverage and significant infrastructure cost
UWB or other external navigation Local position or range-based measurements supplied by anchors and tags, or an external-vision feed Larger indoor areas where radio anchors are practical Anchors, tags and flight-controller integration; positioning does not provide obstacle avoidance by itself
LiDAR or LiDAR-inertial odometry Range-based motion and, in suitable systems, a local map Texture-poor environments and mapping-oriented applications Additional payload, power, cost and integration complexity

Optical flow: the economical indoor option

An optical-flow sensor uses a downward-facing camera to track how the floor moves through the image. A separate downward distance sensor supplies the scale: the same number of pixels represents a different physical speed when the aircraft is at different heights. The flight controller can then estimate horizontal velocity and counter drift.

PX4 describes optical flow as a two-dimensional velocity-estimation method and identifies PX4Flow and ARK Flow hardware as examples. Its documentation recommends optical flow for aircraft intended to fly only indoors when cost is important.

Where optical flow works well

  • Small rooms with a visible, textured floor.
  • Hovering and slow translation at a height where the range sensor has a reliable return.
  • Builds that need stabilization but do not need a globally referenced map.

Common optical-flow failure modes

  • Blank or repetitive flooring: a plain, glossy or uniformly colored surface gives the camera few features to track.
  • Low or changing light: motion estimation becomes noisy when the camera cannot see detail consistently.
  • Excessive height: the floor occupies fewer pixels and the range sensor may exceed its operating envelope.
  • Rapid motion or rotation: blur and large image changes can cause dropouts.
  • Bad scale data: an incorrect or intermittent distance reading turns apparent image motion into an incorrect velocity.

Optical flow does not identify walls, furniture or people. Add a separate obstacle-detection and avoidance system if the aircraft must navigate around objects.

Visual-inertial odometry (VIO)

VIO combines camera-derived visual odometry with IMU measurements. Cameras identify features and their apparent motion; gyroscopes and accelerometers provide high-rate motion information between camera frames. The estimator produces a local pose and velocity even when GNSS is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advantages

  • Provides more than floor-relative velocity, including local three-dimensional movement.
  • Does not require permanent anchors in every room.
  • Can support mapping or navigation across a larger visual scene than a single downward-looking flow camera.

Practical constraints

VIO depends on visible scene features. Dim lighting, blank walls, repetitive patterns, motion blur, dust or sudden exposure changes can make tracking fail. The quality also depends on camera placement, IMU-camera calibration, synchronization and the computing hardware running the estimator. There is no single accuracy number that transfers to every indoor environment; performance must be validated in the actual room and flight profile.

When visual tracking is lost, configure the aircraft to fall back to a mode the pilot can control. Do not assume that a brief VIO dropout is harmless merely because the drone still appears level.

Motion capture and external vision

Motion-capture systems use multiple external infrared cameras or other tracking cameras to observe markers or a tracked vehicle. The system calculates a three-dimensional pose in a local coordinate frame and sends it to the flight controller. Similar external-navigation feeds can come from a tracking-camera or LiDAR/UWB installation.

This is the most controlled approach for laboratory testing because the vehicle’s pose is measured from outside the aircraft. It is also the most infrastructure-heavy: cameras must be installed, calibrated and positioned to maintain coverage. Occlusion, reflective surfaces and flying outside the calibrated volume can interrupt the estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before enabling position control, align the external system’s axes and origin with the flight controller’s expectations. A stable local pose with an incorrect frame can make the aircraft move in an unexpected direction even when the tracking system itself is functioning.

UWB and other external-navigation systems

Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems use fixed anchors and an airborne tag to estimate local position from radio measurements. The resulting position can be supplied to the estimator much like an external-vision measurement. UWB can cover spaces that are too large for a single optical-flow patch and is less dependent on visible floor texture.

UWB still needs careful anchor placement, surveying, time synchronization and integration with the flight controller. Radio positioning alone does not tell the drone where obstacles are. Add a separate range, depth or LiDAR system when collision avoidance is required.

ArduPilot documents optical flow, external navigation and motion capture as non-GPS sources. It also supports restoring a recorded EKF origin for position-controlled modes; ArduPilot 4.7 and later can automatically save and restore that origin, although firmware behavior and parameter names can change between releases.

LiDAR and LiDAR-inertial odometry

LiDAR measures distances to surfaces rather than relying on camera texture. A LiDAR-inertial system can combine those measurements with IMU data to estimate motion and, in some designs, build a local map. This makes it attractive in dim or visually sparse rooms where VIO may lose features.

The trade-off is engineering complexity. Sensors and processing hardware add weight, power demand and cost, and the integration must account for scan rate, field of view, reflective or transparent surfaces and estimator timing. A single downward rangefinder is useful for altitude or optical-flow scale, but it is not the same as a full LiDAR-odometry system.

How to choose an indoor navigation method

Your requirement Most suitable starting point Why
Low-cost hover in one or a few rooms Optical flow plus a downward range sensor Minimal infrastructure and direct velocity feedback when the floor is visible and textured
Local 3D movement without installing anchors VIO or a stereo/depth-camera system Uses the environment itself as the reference, subject to lighting and feature quality
Repeatable, tightly controlled laboratory flight Motion capture or a calibrated external-vision system External pose measurements can be highly controllable within the covered volume
Broad indoor coverage with radio infrastructure UWB with an external-navigation interface Anchor-based local positioning is less dependent on floor appearance
Poor visual texture or mapping requirements LiDAR-inertial odometry Range measurements can provide motion cues where cameras struggle

Step-by-step setup for a GPS-denied indoor flight

  1. Define the required mode. Decide whether you need attitude-only manual control, altitude hold, position hold or an autonomous local mission. The required sensor quality rises sharply as you move from manual flight to autonomy.
  2. Disable GPS use indoors. Do not rely on satellite count, HDOP or an apparent lock. Prevent the estimator from fusing GPS and review GPS-loss and position-loss failsafes.
  3. Install one primary non-GPS source. Mount the optical-flow camera and range sensor downward, install and calibrate a VIO camera/IMU, place motion-capture markers, or survey UWB anchors. Keep the sensor’s field of view clear of landing gear and propeller wash where possible.
  4. Calibrate the sensors and coordinate frames. Follow the flight-controller and sensor calibration procedures. Check camera-to-IMU orientation, sensor offsets, range-sensor direction and the external system’s origin and axes.
  5. Configure the estimator. Select the chosen velocity or position source, set the appropriate quality checks and make sure the estimator reports a healthy local solution before enabling position-controlled modes.
  6. Configure failsafes for that source. Set behavior for optical-flow, VIO, external-navigation or range-sensor loss. Ensure the pilot can immediately take over instead of allowing an autonomous action that assumes a valid global position.
  7. Test at very low altitude in a clear area. Arm only after the estimator is healthy. Lift briefly, check drift and altitude response, and move slowly while watching sensor-quality indicators.
  8. Test loss and recovery. At a safe height and with a clear landing area, verify what happens when the camera is covered, the external feed is interrupted or the range sensor loses its return. Confirm that manual control remains available.
  9. Expand the envelope gradually. Increase speed, height and room size one at a time. Recheck the estimator whenever lighting, flooring, payload, firmware or the tracking layout changes.

Flight-mode limits without a global position

PX4 notes that automatic modes such as Mission, Return and Land require a global position estimate. With only attitude and altitude stabilization, the pilot may need to fly manually or use limited assist modes. A local-position source can enable more assistance, but only if the estimator and mode are configured to accept it.

Return-to-home deserves special caution. A drone cannot safely return to a stored geographic home point when GPS is disabled and no valid external or global position exists. Configure a behavior appropriate to the indoor test—often a controlled pilot takeover or a carefully tested local response—instead of assuming the outdoor failsafe still applies.

Troubleshooting indoor-position problems

The drone drifts while optical flow is enabled

  • Inspect the floor for texture, reflections and repeating patterns.
  • Improve steady illumination and reduce motion blur by lowering speed.
  • Check that the range sensor is aimed at the floor and returning a valid distance within its specified operating height.
  • Verify that the flow camera and range sensor are mounted rigidly and that their orientations and offsets are calibrated.

VIO repeatedly reports tracking loss

  • Increase light and add visible, non-repetitive features to the scene.
  • Reduce rapid yaw, acceleration and vibration while testing.
  • Check camera focus, exposure, lens cleanliness, time synchronization and camera-to-IMU calibration.
  • Use a fallback mode that does not depend on the missing local pose.

External vision is stable but the drone moves in the wrong direction

  • Compare the external system’s axes and origin with the flight controller’s frame convention.
  • Check sign, scale and timestamp handling in the navigation message.
  • Recalibrate the installation after moving a camera, anchor or marker.

The aircraft tries to trigger Return or refuses an automatic mode

Check the mode’s position requirement and the estimator’s source-selection status. Global-position-dependent modes are unavailable without a valid global estimate, while a mode refusal can be the correct safety response rather than a sensor defect.

Indoor safety checklist

  • Disable GPS fusion indoors; never treat a satellite count or low HDOP as proof of a trustworthy fix.
  • Use a tested non-GPS source before enabling position hold or autonomous behavior.
  • Give optical flow a textured, illuminated surface and keep its range sensor within the manufacturer’s operating envelope.
  • Keep people, pets, loose objects and fragile equipment outside the test area.
  • Test estimator health, failsafes and manual takeover at low altitude.
  • Expect position estimates to degrade when lighting, flooring, speed, vibration or coverage changes.
  • Assume return-to-home and other global-position behaviors are unavailable unless a valid external or global position is supplied.

What accuracy can you expect?

There is no authoritative accuracy, range or success-rate figure that applies to every indoor room and every aircraft. Optical flow, VIO, motion capture, UWB and LiDAR each depend on installation, lighting or surface conditions, estimator tuning, vehicle speed and coverage. Treat published specifications as sensor-level capabilities, not guarantees for a complete flight stack.

The useful test is repeatable behavior in the room where the drone will operate: verify hover drift, response to slow movement, recovery after a sensor dropout and the exact failsafe action. Record the conditions, because changing the floor, lighting, payload or firmware can change the result.

Bottom line

You can fly a drone indoors without GPS, and you usually should. Manual attitude flight needs only the pilot and onboard stabilization; reliable hovering and autonomous navigation need a substitute for GPS. Optical flow is the economical choice for slow movement over a visible floor, VIO supplies local 3D motion without installed anchors, motion capture offers controlled laboratory tracking, UWB provides anchor-based local positioning, and LiDAR helps when visual texture is poor. Select the source that matches the room and mission, configure the estimator and failsafes for it, and prove the setup at low altitude before relying on it.
