Whether a Docker-based PDF editor can replace Adobe Acrobat depends on the work you need it to do—and the available evidence does not establish which of two products stood out in a hands-on test. Stirling PDF and BentoPDF are two documented self-hosted options, but their official feature descriptions cannot prove editing fidelity, speed, reliability, or a comparative winner. Use the task-by-task framework below to assess them against your own PDFs before switching.
What the two tools are—and what their documentation can establish
Stirling PDF is a collection of PDF tools with Docker and other deployment options. Its official overview lists editing, merging, signing, redaction, conversion, OCR, REST API, and workflow capabilities, and reports “55+ tools” as a vendor feature count—not an independent measurement. Stirling PDF overview
BentoPDF describes itself as a browser-based toolkit that processes files locally using WebAssembly. Its listed capabilities include editing and annotation, signing, redaction, forms, page organization, OCR, compression, and conversion. It documents a self-hosted Docker image called bentopdf-simple. Those descriptions help identify what to investigate; they do not establish that either tool edits existing text or complex layouts as accurately as Acrobat, or that one performed better in a test. Tool counts are not a useful substitute for checking the specific tasks and documents that matter to you.

How to judge whether either editor can replace Acrobat
Separate annotations from editing existing content
Adding text, comments, or marks to a PDF is different from changing text already embedded in the document, preserving its layout, or reflowing content. Test both kinds of work if your workflow needs them. Use representative files with the fonts, tables, images, and page structures you encounter; then inspect the saved result in another PDF viewer. Feature labels alone do not establish editing fidelity.
Test the tasks you actually use
Build a short checklist from your Acrobat routine: for example, page insertion and rearrangement, form filling, signatures, redaction, OCR, compression, or format conversion. Check each task in the current product documentation and perform it on a copy of a real-world document. For redaction, verify that the underlying text is actually removed rather than merely covered visually. For OCR, check whether the resulting text is searchable and accurate enough for your use.
Run OCR and office conversion as separate tests
Do not assume that a basic page operation demonstrates that OCR or conversion will work in your deployment. Stirling PDF documents multiple Docker image variants, and says OCR and office conversion depend on server-side components available in its Full feature set. Confirm the selected image and its bundled components in the current Stirling PDF versions guide.

BentoPDF’s Docker documentation says Office conversion requires SharedArrayBuffer, cross-origin isolation headers, and a secure context. The documented image includes the required headers, but a plain HTTP connection to a LAN IP typically does not provide the secure context this feature needs; use HTTPS for non-loopback access. Check the actual browser and network path you plan to use. BentoPDF Docker deployment
Where files are processed depends on the deployment
BentoPDF describes browser-side WebAssembly processing. Stirling PDF describes self-hosted processing on the user’s instance; its desktop deployment also distinguishes between local features and advanced tools that need a connected cloud or self-hosted server. These descriptions are not a blanket security guarantee. Consider which deployment you use, where the browser or server processes files, who can reach the service, and whether your configuration and network meet your requirements. Check Docker setup and access before relying on a service
Stirling PDF: persistence, login, and image choice
Stirling PDF’s Docker guide documents persisting configuration through a /configs mount. It describes login as enabled by default on a fresh setup, with an initial administrator account, and instructs administrators to change the initial password after first login. Verify the current image tag, account details, and defaults in the Stirling PDF Docker guide before using setup instructions; defaults can change.

- EVERY PDF TOOL UNLOCKED - 30+ tools in one app: edit text and images, convert, merge, split, compress, sign, OCR, redact, watermark, batch process, and more. No feature gates, no upsells, nothing held back.
- PAY ONCE, OWN FOREVER — A one-time purchase, not a subscription. Other apps runs $240/year — Scrivar is yours for life, with free updates included.
- UNLIMITED eSIGN, BUILT IN — Send contracts and forms for signature and track every step. Recipients sign in their browser with no account or app needed. Replace DocuSign and save hundreds a year.
- PC, MAC, AND WEB — Install on any Win 10/11 PC or macOS 11+ Mac (Intel or Apple Silicon), or work in your browser at scrivar.com. Same tools, same account, everywhere you work.
- OCR + FULL OFFICE CONVERSION — Turn scanned documents into searchable, selectable text, and convert PDFs to and from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with formatting kept intact.
Choose an image variant based on the features you need, not just whether the container starts. If OCR or Office conversion is essential, confirm that the selected image includes the required server-side components using the Stirling PDF versions guide.
BentoPDF: secure context and proxy behavior
If you need Office conversion, confirm that the service is accessed over HTTPS when it is not running in a loopback context, and that the required cross-origin isolation headers survive any reverse proxy. A container being available on your network does not by itself establish that browser-dependent features are ready or that access is safely restricted. BentoPDF Docker deployment
Apply the same operational checks to either installation
- Limit access to the people who need the service, and understand the authentication behavior of the current setup.
- Use persistent storage where the product requires it, and confirm that configuration survives container replacement.
- Check how updates and image tags are managed before treating the service as a dependable part of a work process.
- Test through the actual reverse proxy, HTTPS setup, browser, and network location users will rely on.
A fair comparison needs a recorded, repeatable test
To support a claim that one editor stood out, test both products on the same representative files and tasks, with versions and deployment details recorded. A concise test log should identify:
- Each product version or image tag and the deployment used.
- The same input PDFs and the same tasks performed in each tool.
- Whether existing text and layout were changed, or only annotations were added.
- Whether OCR, conversion, or other dependent features worked in the actual setup.
- What changed in the output, what needed correction, and any failed or unavailable task.
That evidence can support a useful verdict for a particular workflow. Without it, the official documentation supports describing capabilities and deployment requirements, but not naming a test winner or claiming equivalent performance to Acrobat.
