No. A desktop DDR5 DIMM will not fit in a DDR4 motherboard slot, and DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Their notches are in different positions, and the motherboard must support the memory generation. Do not force a module if its notch does not line up with the slot ridge.

Why DDR5 will not fit in a DDR4 slot

DDR4 and DDR5 desktop DIMMs each have 288 pins, but their layouts and notches differ. The notch acts as a physical key, so a DDR5 module is not designed to seat in a DDR4 slot. Intel explains that the generations cannot be installed in the same DIMM slots, and Crucial says each requires a motherboard designed for that memory type: Intel’s RAM compatibility guidance and Crucial’s DDR4 and DDR5 overview.

The notch is also a warning, not an obstacle to work around. If the module’s groove does not match the motherboard’s ridge, stop and verify the required memory type rather than pressing harder. Crucial’s DDR5 installation guidance specifically warns against forcing a mismatched module.

What determines whether your RAM is compatible?

The motherboard

The motherboard’s slot and memory support determine whether it accepts DDR4 or DDR5. A processor family that supports both generations does not make a single motherboard slot compatible with both. Intel’s guidance is direct: the motherboard must support the type of RAM you intend to use.

The processor and board combination

The processor must also be compatible with the motherboard. Some CPU families can be paired with either DDR4 or DDR5 motherboards, but that does not mean one board accepts both types. For example, ASRock’s Z790-C manual specifies four 288-pin DDR5 DIMM slots and says DDR4 modules cannot be installed in them. That is an example for that specific board, not a rule about every Z790 motherboard; check the exact model’s manual.

Desktop DIMM versus laptop SO-DIMM

Do not assume the desktop pin count applies to laptop memory. Crucial lists 260 pins for DDR4 SO-DIMMs and 262 pins for DDR5 SO-DIMMs. Form factor and generation both need to match the computer’s specifications.

How to check before buying RAM

  1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model. Use the computer’s system information, the label on the device, or the motherboard documentation.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s specifications or owner manual. Confirm whether it requires DDR4 or DDR5 and whether it uses DIMM or SO-DIMM modules.
  3. Check the supported capacity and configuration. Confirm the maximum memory capacity, supported module count, and any slot-population requirements.
  4. Check supported memory speeds. Choose a kit within the board’s supported specifications; the processor’s stated maximum alone does not guarantee that speed with every board or kit.
  5. Stop if the notch does not align. Recheck the part and system specifications; never force the module into the slot.

Does a DDR5 upgrade require a new motherboard?

If your current motherboard has DDR4 slots, changing only the RAM will not make it accept DDR5. A move to DDR5 requires a motherboard designed for DDR5, plus a processor compatible with that board. Before buying parts, verify support for the exact CPU-and-motherboard combination.

What Intel desktop processor memory limits tell you

Intel’s processor compatibility guidance, last reviewed in 2025, gives these maximum supported rates for the listed desktop generations. They are processor support figures, not a promise that a particular motherboard and memory kit will run at those speeds.

Intel desktop processor generation DDR5 maximum listed DDR4 maximum listed
12th generation Up to 4800 MT/s Up to 3200 MT/s
13th and 14th generation Up to 5600/4800 MT/s Up to 3200 MT/s

Intel’s rates are reported in its desktop processor memory compatibility guidance. Check the specific processor and motherboard documentation for the supported configuration. These figures establish compatibility ceilings, not how much faster a particular application will run; no workload-specific performance comparison follows from them.
