Yes, but only conditionally. A custom dashboard can replace the practical launcher and file-management experience of LiveArea without inherently deleting installed games or save files. Preservation depends on keeping the correct storage mount, content database, licenses and application paths intact—and making a verified backup before changing software or storage. A launcher replacement, per-title LiveArea customization and an SD2Vita migration are different operations with different failure modes.
What LiveArea is on a PS Vita
LiveArea is not just a wallpaper or theme. Sony’s User’s Guide describes the Vita home screen as the place where application icons are arranged, folders are created and pages are navigated. The home screen can display up to 500 application icons. Each application also has its own LiveArea screen, which presents information and actions that vary by title.
That means two layers are involved:
- The system home screen: the shell used to find bubbles, open folders and move between pages.
- A title’s LiveArea: the screen shown for a particular game or application, with title-specific actions and information.
Replacing the way you launch and manage software is therefore not the same as replacing every LiveArea asset, and neither operation is automatically the same as moving your games to new storage.

What a custom dashboard can replace
VitaShell as a practical LiveArea replacement
The VitaShell project README explicitly calls VitaShell “an alternative replacement of the PS Vita’s LiveArea.” It functions as a file manager, package installer and built-in FTP tool. In practical terms, that can change how you browse files, install packages and transfer content, giving you a management-oriented interface instead of relying on the stock bubble workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That wording supports a claim about the launcher and management experience. It does not establish that every system component is removed, that every firmware behaves identically or that every game bubble is permanently converted into a VitaShell entry. VitaShell’s repository is archived, and plugin compatibility can change, so installation instructions should always match the firmware and plugin versions on your console.
Per-title LiveArea replacement is a separate feature
VitaSDK’s SceLiveAreaUtilUser reference documents sceLiveAreaReplaceAllSync and sceLiveAreaReplaceAllForTitleSync. These APIs replace LiveArea data for a specified title. They are useful for custom per-game presentation, but they do not prove that the entire Vita shell has been globally replaced.
A custom launcher and a title-level LiveArea modification can coexist conceptually: one changes how you reach and manage software, while the other changes the presentation associated with a particular title. Treat them as separate changes when planning backups and troubleshooting.

A dashboard replacement, by itself, is not documented as a deletion operation. Sony documents Vita games as content stored on Vita cards or downloaded from PlayStation Store, and it documents saved-data copying between systems plus saved-data uploads to PlayStation Network servers. Sony’s Content Manager documentation also covers copying, deleting, backing up and restoring games, applications and saved data with a PS3, computer or online storage; that guide applies to system software 3.73 or later.

The safe conclusion is conditional rather than absolute:
- If the same storage is mounted, the content database still points to the applications, and the licenses and paths remain valid, a launcher change should leave the underlying game and save data available.
- If storage is mounted incorrectly, a database entry is lost, a license is not recognized or an application path changes, bubbles can disappear and content can become inaccessible even when some files remain on the card.
- Because homebrew dashboards and migrations differ, there is no universal lossless guarantee for every firmware, plugin combination or storage layout.
“The bubble is gone” and “the data was erased” are not equivalent diagnoses. Check storage, database, license and path state before deleting anything or reinstalling a game.
Three changes that are often confused
| Change | What it affects | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard or launcher replacement | The practical interface used to launch and manage content; VitaShell provides file management, package installation and FTP functions. | It does not establish that all system components are removed or that content is deleted. |
| Per-title LiveArea replacement | LiveArea data for a specified title through documented SceLiveAreaUtilUser APIs. | It does not establish a global replacement of the Vita shell. |
| Theme or appearance change | The visual presentation of the existing shell. | It does not by itself provide a new file manager, package installer or FTP workflow. |
| SD2Vita storage migration | The storage device and mount used for applications and saves; the YAMT/SD2Vita guide describes moving to microSD-based storage. | It is not merely a dashboard change and can make an existing game/save catalog complicated to move. |
Back up your Vita before changing the shell
Do this before installing a dashboard, changing plugins or moving content to SD2Vita. The goal is to preserve both the data and a way to restore it.
- Record the current environment. Write down the system software version, the storage device currently mounted, the plugins that affect storage or boot behavior and which titles are installed. Version-specific behavior matters because a guide written for another firmware may not apply.
- Back up saved data first. Use Sony’s documented saved-data upload to PlayStation Network servers where your account and title support it, or use Content Manager’s saved-data copying options. A save that exists only on the console should not be your only copy.
- Make a broader content backup. Content Manager documents copying and backing up games, applications and saved data to a PS3, computer or online storage. Use the option that matches your available destination and the system software supported by the guide.
- Keep the original storage intact. Do not format, delete or repurpose the original card while testing the new dashboard or SD2Vita setup. It is your simplest rollback source if the new mount is wrong.
- Confirm the backup is usable. Check that the destination contains the expected games, applications and saves and that you know the account or device needed to restore them. A backup that was never verified is only an assumption.
- Capture license and path information. Note which content is downloaded, which is on a Vita card and which depends on a particular storage mount. A missing license or changed path can look like a deleted bubble.
- Charge the console and avoid interruptions. A failed write during a plugin, database or storage change can create a separate recovery problem from the dashboard itself.
The Content Manager guide cited by Sony applies to system software 3.73 and later. If your console uses a different version, use instructions explicitly matched to that version rather than assuming every menu or compatibility detail is unchanged.

Installing a custom launcher without losing access to content
Use a version-matched procedure
Choose a guide that identifies your firmware, exploit environment and plugin versions. The VitaShell project documentation establishes what the application is intended to do, but it is not a promise that an archived release works unchanged with every modern setup. Avoid combining a launcher, storage driver and unrelated plugins in one blind step; change one variable at a time so a failure can be isolated.
Separate launcher installation from storage migration
If you are only changing the interface, leave the existing storage arrangement alone during the first boot. Verify that your normal games and saves remain available before attempting an SD2Vita migration. This gives you a known-good baseline and prevents two independent changes from producing one ambiguous failure.
Keep a rollback path
Retain the original storage and the backup until you have launched representative games, opened their saves and confirmed that the new setup survives a normal reboot. Do not treat a successful installation screen as proof that every title is intact.

The YAMT/SD2Vita guide describes switching to microSD-based SD2Vita storage and says the process is intended to carry existing apps over. The same guidance warns that moving an existing game and save catalog can be complicated. That distinction matters: an SD2Vita adapter changes where the Vita expects content to live, while a dashboard changes how you reach and manage it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before migration, back up saves and the relevant storage, then document which device is active. After migration, verify that the Vita mounted the intended microSD volume and that the content database, licenses and application paths still point to the moved data. If the catalog does not appear, stop before formatting or reinstalling. Restore the previous storage arrangement or use a verified Content Manager backup rather than guessing which files are safe to delete.
“PS Vita SD2Vita adapter” is an accurate search phrase for this type of storage project, but compatibility depends on the console model, firmware, driver and setup. Retailer specifications and current prices are separate facts that must be checked for your particular hardware.
Post-install checks that catch most access problems
Once the dashboard or storage change is complete, check the system in a deliberate order:
- Storage mount: Confirm that the intended Vita card or microSD-backed mount is active. A wrong mount can make an entire catalog appear absent.
- Application entries: Look for the expected bubbles or launcher entries without deleting anything that appears missing.
- Licenses: Confirm that downloaded content still has the license information required to run.
- Paths: Check that the launcher points to the same application locations used before the change.
- Saves: Open at least one known game and verify that an existing save is visible. Do not create a new save over a title until the old data is confirmed.
- Cold reboot: Restart the Vita normally and repeat the checks. A setup that works only until reboot is not stable.
- Backup availability: Keep the verified backup until the system has passed these checks and you have tested the recovery route.
If games or bubbles disappear
Do not assume deletion
A missing bubble can result from an inactive storage mount, a database entry that no longer references the application, an unrecognized license or a changed path. The visible symptom does not identify the cause.
Best Value

Use the least destructive recovery order
- Power down and confirm the intended storage device and its mount configuration.
- Check whether the launcher is looking at the same application paths used before the change.
- Verify license status for downloaded titles.
- Check the original storage, if it was retained, before writing new data to the replacement device.
- Restore games, applications and saved data with Sony’s documented Content Manager backup and restore functions if the setup cannot be returned to its known-good state.
Avoid formatting or deleting the old card while diagnosing. Reinstalling a title can also overwrite the opportunity to determine whether its original save and license data were still present.
How to evaluate a custom dashboard
Whether a dashboard is suitable depends less on its appearance than on how it handles the parts of the Vita that matter to you:
- Replacement scope: Does it replace the practical launcher, or only customize LiveArea data for selected titles?
- Management tools: Does it provide the file management, package installation or FTP functions you actually need?
- Compatibility: Is the release and its plugins documented for your firmware and storage driver?
- Backup and rollback: Can you return to the previous storage and launcher arrangement without relying on an untested backup?
- Recovery behavior: Does the setup make it clear how to check mounts, licenses, database entries and application paths when bubbles disappear?
A dashboard that offers many functions but no tested rollback plan is a poor preservation choice. The safest setup is the one you can restore, not merely the one that boots once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat you can safely promise yourself
You can reasonably expect a custom dashboard to change the way you launch and manage Vita content, and VitaShell is explicitly documented as an alternative replacement for LiveArea. You cannot responsibly promise that every game and save will remain accessible under every firmware, plugin and storage combination without a verified backup. Keep launcher replacement, per-title LiveArea customization and SD2Vita migration separate in your plan; preserve the original storage; and verify mounts, licenses, database entries and paths before concluding that data was lost.
