CSS-drawn comfort-food illustrations can reduce image downloads when they replace simple graphic assets, which may help a page feel lighter on a slow connection. But there is no established evidence that this design choice improves conversion. Treat that outcome as a hypothesis to test—not a promise—and keep the page’s full delivery and rendering costs in view.
How page weight can affect a slow connection
Images can add substantial weight to a page. The HTTP Archive’s 2019 Web Almanac found that media accounted for 67.0% of page bytes at the median, with shares ranging from 44.1% at the 10th percentile to 91.2% at the 90th percentile. Those figures describe sites measured in 2019; they are not current benchmarks for every site. That makes reducing unnecessary image downloads a plausible way to improve the experience, but bytes are only part of the story. A visual can also affect when the important content appears, how much work a browser performs, and whether the design remains clear and usable.

Simple shapes and illustrations may be drawn with CSS rather than downloaded as separate image files. A historical W3C paper demonstrated three images totaling 7,541 bytes represented by an HTML-and-CSS demo of 610 bytes. That was a limited test, not a general compression ratio: photographs and many non-textual graphics cannot be represented this way. W3C: HTML and CSS images.

A simple bowl, pastry, or cup illustration may suit CSS if its appearance can be built from a small number of shapes. Detailed textures, realistic food photography, or complex artwork may take too much CSS to recreate or simply look worse. Compare the actual alternatives rather than assuming that CSS is lighter.
CSS does not automatically mean fewer bytes
A CSS background-image still downloads its referenced image. The HTTP Archive’s 2021 CSS chapter reported about 16 KB median total weight for external images loaded via CSS on mobile. This is a historical measurement, not a current universal value. HTTP Archive, 2021 Web Almanac: CSS.

For a fair comparison, count the compressed stylesheet and any image resources it references, not just the illustration code. Also consider request count, caching, and whether the CSS is already needed for the page. Replacing one image with a large block of additional CSS—or adding a background image while calling the result “CSS art”—may not reduce the delivered weight.

Make sure the main visual appears promptly
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures the time from navigation until the largest image or text block in the viewport renders. web.dev’s guidance, updated March 31, 2025, defines a good experience as LCP of 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of visits. That threshold is a user-experience target, not a result guaranteed by CSS illustrations. web.dev: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).

Discovery timing matters. An image referenced only through a stylesheet background may be discovered later than an image present in the initial HTML. If the food artwork is the page’s largest visible element, compare when each implementation is discovered and rendered; don’t judge it by file size alone.
Account for rendering, animation, and accessibility
Transfer is only one part of performance. The 2022 Web Almanac notes that large resources take longer to transmit and can require more processing and memory after arrival, delaying display—especially on less capable devices. HTTP Archive, 2022 Web Almanac: Performance.

If the illustration animates, the properties used can add browser work. Animations that change geometry or trigger painting can be costly; transforms and opacity are generally preferred for animation. web.dev: Animation guide. Keep decorative artwork from obscuring text or controls, and check that the page remains understandable if styles or assets fail to load.

A lighter page could improve the experience for people on constrained connections, but that mechanism alone does not establish a conversion lift. web.dev recounts a YouTube example in which a watch page was reduced from 1.2 MB to 250 KB; the account does not establish a conversion result, nor does it show what CSS comfort-food art would do. web.dev: Why speed matters.

Compare the CSS and image versions using the same page content and representative viewport sizes, pixel densities, network conditions, and device capabilities. Measure the whole delivery and rendering path, then run a separate conversion experiment if conversion is the claim.
