A Counter-Strike 2 player says a master’s thesis tested whether mouse and keyboard behavior in recorded match demos could help identify when different accounts belong to the same person. The author reports 100% identification with mouse data and 98% with keyboard data, but those are results attributed to the thesis author—not independently verified real-world accuracy. The work describes a possible way to link accounts, not a proven cheat detector or a feature shown to be deployed by Valve.

What the thesis set out to identify

The project asks whether patterns in how someone uses a mouse and keyboard during CS2 matches are distinctive enough to recognize that player across demos or accounts. The thesis author, posting as Magga_, described the goal as “a way to recognise the person behind an account using nothing but the demos CS2 already records.” Magga_’s Reddit post says the study used demo data and covered more than 1,000 players; Tom’s Hardware also reports that participant count.

“Recognise the person behind an account” is a description of linking gameplay observations, not identifying a legal name. The available account of the work does not establish that the method can discover who a player is outside the game.

What the reported results do—and do not—show

Reported result Attribution and meaning
More than 1,000 players Reported by Magga_ and repeated by Tom’s Hardware as the study’s scope. The accessible accounts do not provide a detailed sampling description.
100% identification with mouse data A result reported by the thesis author and repeated in coverage. It describes the study’s reported dataset and evaluation, not demonstrated perfect accuracy in live play.
98% correct identification with keyboard data A result reported by the thesis author and repeated in coverage. The available accounts do not establish population-wide performance or an error rate for real-world enforcement.
Grade A Magga_ says the thesis received this grade. The available sources do not independently confirm it.

The full thesis and detailed evaluation protocol are not available in the cited accounts. They do not give enough information to assess the sample balance, separation of training and test data, false-match rate, or how results change with different equipment or playing conditions. That means the headline percentages should be read as reported study results, not as a guarantee that the system would identify every player—or avoid linking unrelated players—outside the tested setting.

Account linkage is not the same as cheat detection

Two questions can sound similar but require different evidence:

  • Same-player verification: Do two gameplay records plausibly come from the same player?
  • Cheat detection and enforcement: Is there evidence that a player cheated, and does it justify a particular sanction?

The thesis is described as addressing the first question. A behavioral match might help a platform decide which accounts deserve further review, but it does not by itself show that the player cheated. A same-player match is not proof of misconduct.

Magga_ presents account linkage as a possible way to make it harder for someone to return on a replacement account after a ban. That is a proposed application, not evidence that the method is being used in CS2 enforcement. The sources do not show that Valve has adopted the thesis or made it a live feature.

How a separate CS2 study fits in

A related but separate paper, Xuchen Zhang’s “Same-Player Verification for Account Consistency in Counter-Strike 2”, also examines identifying the same player across gameplay demos. Its abstract describes behavioral signals including crosshair control, movement-stop-fire coordination, economy and buying behavior, combat and engagement, and timing patterns.

That paper reports experiments on 1,330 demos and 13,300 demo-player observations. It reports an average ROC AUC of 0.931 for its pairwise model, different-player recall of 0.722 at 95% precision, and an AUC of 0.986 when aggregating player history at K=10. These are results from Zhang’s paper, not Magga_’s thesis; the datasets and methods should not be conflated. The separate work illustrates the broader account-consistency research question, but does not independently validate the thesis’s percentages.

What remains uncertain

The accessible sources do not provide the thesis itself, a confusion matrix, a false-positive rate, or enough methodological detail to judge how well the reported results would carry over to enforcement. In particular, the published headline figures do not establish how often unrelated players might be linked, how robust a fingerprint is after changes in hardware or playing conditions, or whether the method distinguishes cheaters from other players.

  • TEXTURED MICRO-WEAVE CLOTH SURFACE — Optimized across all mouse sensors for pixel-precise accuracy and total tracking responsiveness, the weave’s high thread count let the mouse glide with ease across the mat for quick, fluid swipes

  • ANTI-SLIP BASE — When things get chaotic, pull off clutch plays with a stable base that’s crucial to competitive gaming

Accordingly, the defensible takeaway is narrow: Magga_ reports a thesis experiment that used CS2 demo-derived mouse and keyboard behavior to identify players across accounts, with high figures in the reported evaluation. The available evidence does not establish a production-ready anti-cheat system, automatic bans, or adoption by Valve.
