Yes—Codex can help implement a feature in an open-source app from a natural-language request, so you may not need to hand-write the implementation. For example, you could ask it to add a keyboard shortcut or an export option. That is an illustrative request, not a tested result or a promise that the change will work. You still need access to the code, enough setup to let Codex work, a clear description of the behavior you want, and a way to review and verify its changes.

What Codex can do—and what it cannot promise

OpenAI describes Codex as a coding agent that can read and modify code, generate code from natural-language instructions, and help with feature development. In practice, you can describe a missing capability and ask it to inspect the project, propose an approach, and make a change. OpenAI Academy’s Codex for Builders and the Codex product page describe these capabilities.

That does not establish that Codex will correctly implement every feature in every app, or that a person can complete every step without technical help. The app’s architecture, dependencies, existing conventions, and your description all affect the result. Treat the generated change as a proposal to evaluate, not an automatically verified release.

Choose a way to work with the repository

The documented options include working locally with the Codex command-line interface (CLI) or sending coding tasks to Codex Cloud. They differ in where the work runs and what access and setup are required; neither is universally better for every reader.

Workflow Where the code work runs What you need
Local CLI In your local environment, where the repository is available. The CLI, an authenticated account, and a usable local project setup. OpenAI’s Codex CLI – Getting Started explains the local workflow and approval modes.
Codex Cloud On OpenAI-managed computers using cloud environments. An eligible account and, where applicable, workspace permission, a connected repository, and a configured environment. OpenAI’s Enterprise admin getting started guide for Codex describes repository connections and cloud environment setup.

Access is not the same for every plan or workspace. OpenAI’s Codex plan information says Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, with usage limits that vary by plan. It describes Codex Cloud as available to eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Education accounts, subject to rollout and workspace settings; Free and Go do not include Cloud access. Check that live page for current eligibility before choosing a workflow.

Prepare a useful feature request

Before asking for an implementation, identify the repository and describe the change in terms of what a user should be able to do. A request such as “add export” leaves important decisions open: the file format, which data is included, where the export command appears, and what happens when there is nothing to export.

  • Describe the user action: say where the feature should be available and how someone will invoke it.
  • Define the expected result: specify the output, behavior, or visible change you expect.
  • Call out constraints: mention relevant platforms, existing project conventions, or requirements such as preserving current behavior.
  • Ask for inspection first: have Codex locate the relevant code and explain a proposed approach before it edits files.

For example, you might ask: “Inspect this repository and find the existing export-related code. I want users to export the currently displayed data as a CSV. First explain where you would make the change and how the project handles similar actions; wait for my approval before editing.” This is an example of a careful prompt, not a claim that Codex has produced or tested the feature.

Use a review-and-verification loop

  1. Open the right project. In a local workflow, make the repository available in your local environment; for a cloud task, use a connected repository and configured environment. Confirm you have permission to work with the code.
  2. Ask Codex to inspect and plan. Request the relevant files, a short explanation of the current behavior, and a proposed implementation. Resolve unclear requirements before asking it to make the change.
  3. Request the feature. Ask for the agreed behavior and tell Codex to follow the project’s existing conventions. Depending on the workflow and approval mode, you may need to review or approve actions.
  4. Review the changes. Examine the diff—the specific files and lines changed—for unrelated edits, missing cases, or behavior that does not match your request. Ask Codex to explain unfamiliar changes rather than accepting them blindly.
  5. Run the project’s documented checks. Follow the repository’s own setup, build, and test instructions where available. A completed code change is not proof that the app builds, passes tests, or behaves correctly in your use case.
  6. Decide how the change should be shared. If you maintain the repository, you can decide whether to keep or revise the change. If it belongs to someone else, a public repository does not by itself give you permission to change its canonical project. You may be able to propose your work through the project’s contribution process, but maintainers decide whether to accept it.

What “without writing code” really means

You can delegate writing much of the implementation to Codex and communicate in ordinary language. But the workflow still involves setting up or connecting a repository, deciding exactly what the feature should do, reviewing the result, and checking that it works. If you cannot perform those checks yourself, ask someone familiar with the project to review them before relying on the change.
