Claude can find context in a connected Gmail account and draft a reply for you, but the documented integration cannot create, change, or send an email. You still need to check the draft in your email client and send it yourself.
What Claude can do with Gmail
Anthropic introduced Google Workspace connections for Gmail, Calendar, and Docs so Claude can use information from those services as context. With Gmail connected, you can ask Claude to locate a relevant thread, summarize it, and help write a reply. The feature is described as being in beta and available to paid Claude.ai users; check Anthropic’s current help article for eligibility and availability.
This is drafting assistance, not an autonomous email agent. Anthropic states: “These integrations currently do not support creating or modifying emails and calendar events.” Claude therefore cannot put its suggested text into a Gmail draft or send the reply through this integration. - Connect Google Workspace. Authenticate with the Google account whose mail you want Claude to consult. Follow the connection flow and review the access you authorize.
- Ask Claude to find and summarize the thread. Identify the person or subject clearly, and ask for the relevant conversation and key points before requesting a draft.
- Give the reply a purpose and tone. Specify what you want the message to accomplish, any facts Claude should include, and whether it should sound formal, warm, brief, or otherwise.
- Verify the draft against the original email. Check names, dates, commitments, attachments, and sensitive details. A fluent draft can still misstate what was agreed or omit an important condition.
- Move the reviewed text to your email client and send it yourself. The documented integration does not create or modify the message in Gmail.
For a request involving multiple actions, Anthropic’s connector guide recommends handling them in stages and checking related mail before drafting. Can Claude read your Gmail, and when?
You must authenticate the Google account you connect. Anthropic says Claude’s access is limited to that connected account and that it accesses Gmail or Calendar when a request requires information from those sources. Its help documentation also says it retrieves the minimum information needed for the response. See Anthropic’s explanation of the Google Workspace integrations.
What happens to email information in a chat?
Anthropic says information retrieved through a connector is stored on its servers with the associated chat, and deleting that chat deletes the retrieved data. Its connector privacy explanation describes this relationship.

Anthropic distinguishes raw connector content from material copied into a conversation when discussing model improvement. Its privacy article dated March 16, 2026 says raw connector content is not included in model improvement, while content copied into a conversation may be; use for improvement also depends on account settings and the exceptions described there. Claude’s Gmail connection is useful when you want help finding context and shaping wording, but the human review and sending steps remain yours. It is not suitable if your requirement is for Claude to automatically create or send replies through this integration. Treat the generated text as a proposal, especially for messages involving confidential information, legal or financial commitments, health details, or decisions that require precise accountability.
There is no cited published measure here for time saved, error rates, or reply quality. Whether the workflow helps depends on the thread and on how much checking the message needs.
