Chinese violet cress seed oil has shown promising lubricant behavior in laboratory studies, but the finding needs a key qualification: a 2019 study attributed the oil’s superior lubricity to naturally occurring oligomeric estolides, not simply to its unusual fatty acids. Later tests reported favorable friction and wear results against a petroleum-based reference, but they do not establish a lubricant for sale or prove suitability in a particular machine.
What are wuhanic and nebraskanic acids?
Wuhanic acid and nebraskanic acid are unusual 24-carbon dihydroxy fatty acids identified in the seed oil of Chinese violet cress, Orychophragmus violaceus, a member of the mustard family. The 2018 discovery report described hydroxyl groups at positions 7 and 18. Researchers used gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance to determine the structures; the acids had not appeared as expected in an initial thin-layer chromatography analysis. Their interest is not just that they are rare. A 2018 perspective in Nature Plants notes that more than 450 distinct fatty-acid structures have been described in plants, and characterizes these two C24 compounds as products of an unprecedented route called “discontinuous elongation.” (Nature Plants, 2018)

How does discontinuous elongation work?
Most fatty acids lengthen through a repeating elongation cycle. In the pathway described for Chinese violet cress, a specialized route diverts an intermediate from that usual cycle, producing the unusual chain structure instead of simply extending the fatty acid in the standard way. The 2018 report described this biosynthetic detour as the reason the plant can make the two C24 dihydroxy acids. It also quoted co-author Sten Stymne saying, “I think the biosynthetic pathway is quite solid.” (Chemistry World, 2018)

Why did the oil attract lubricant interest?
Fatty acids with hydroxyl groups can contribute useful properties to oils, and early reporting presented Chinese violet cress seed oil as a promising natural lubricant, comparing it favorably with castor oil. The 2018 report said wuhanic and nebraskanic acids together accounted for as much as half the seed oil by weight. That result made the oil a compelling subject for further materials research, but it did not show that the isolated acids alone caused the oil’s lubricity. (Chemistry World, 2018)
Estolides change the explanation
A 2019 peer-reviewed follow-up concluded that naturally occurring oligomeric estolides in the seed oil, rather than hydroxy-fatty-acid content alone, accounted for its excellent lubricity. Estolides are molecules formed when fatty-acid units link together through ester bonds. This distinction matters: the oil is a complex mixture, so its performance cannot be attributed to wuhanic and nebraskanic acids in isolation. The same literature discusses castor oil as a candidate base oil for biodegradable greases and oleogels, but that context does not mean ordinary castor oil reproduces the violet cress oil’s composition or test results. What do the more recent lubricant tests show?
A 2025 characterization abstract reported an oil sample containing 50.5 wt% wuhanic acid and 9.9 wt% nebraskanic acid, with a pour point of −18 °C. In the reported HFRR (high-frequency reciprocating rig) tests, the tested oil produced lower average wear scars and coefficients of friction than petroleum-based PAO-6. A USDA Agricultural Research Service record for the characterization reports closely matching composition, 62.7% total hydroxy fatty acids, and the wear-scar comparison. These are findings for the samples and laboratory test conditions described by the studies—not a universal ranking of lubricant performance or evidence that the oil is qualified for any specific engine, gearbox, or industrial system. Is Chinese violet cress oil commercially available?
The available sources document scientific characterization and patent-related work, but do not establish scaled commercial production or a retail lubricant made from Chinese violet cress oil. In the 2018 account, the plant was not considered suitable as an oil crop, and attempts at transferring the relevant pathway into other seeds had produced about 1% by weight at that time. Those figures describe the state of the work reported in 2018; they should not be read as current crop or engineering results. (Chemistry World, 2018)
Accordingly, the evidence supports a promising research candidate, not a consumer buying recommendation. Laboratory HFRR results do not by themselves establish long-term durability, environmental lifecycle benefits, performance across machines, or commercial readiness.
