ChatGPT can help you find products and, for some eligible offers, complete a purchase without leaving the conversation. Product discovery and comparison are broadly available: ChatGPT can surface products, explain trade-offs and link to retailers. An in-chat transaction is different. It appears only when the specific product and merchant support Instant Checkout, and you must review and confirm the order details.
When you buy, the merchant remains responsible for payment processing, accepting or declining the order, fulfillment, returns and customer support. If Instant Checkout is not shown, ChatGPT has not placed an order; use the retailer link and finish checkout on that retailer’s site.

OpenAI’s current shopping guidance describes Instant Checkout as conditional rather than universal. The actual offer is the authority: look for the checkout control on that product, not merely a product card in results. You can use an ordinary shopping request for a quick set of options or ask for a more deliberate buyer’s guide. Typical prompts include “Help me find costumes for my dog” or “best running shoes under $100.” ChatGPT can use the constraints in your request to organize products, show relevant specifications and link to sellers. The result is assistance with research, not an order confirmation.

Ask for a focused product list
State the use case, budget, must-have features and any exclusions. For example, identify your apartment size, noise tolerance and storage limits when asking about a cordless vacuum. Clear constraints give ChatGPT a basis for explaining why one option fits better than another; they do not guarantee that a listed price or stock status is current.
Use shopping research for a buyer’s guide
Shopping research is designed for questions such as “Find the quietest cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment” or “Help me choose between these three bikes.” It can produce a structured guide with recommended picks, reasoning, trade-offs and links to merchants. OpenAI’s instructions for shopping research describe this multi-step approach.
A comparison can help you narrow a decision, but it does not replace checking the retailer’s page. ChatGPT’s displayed information may be supplied by third parties, and product attributes, delivery promises and prices can change after the result is generated.

Follow a retailer link when you are ready
- Open the product result and inspect the listed merchants and prices.
- Choose the retailer whose total cost, delivery date and policies fit your needs.
- Follow the merchant link. The retailer’s own checkout then collects payment and confirms the order.
- Keep the retailer’s confirmation and use its support channel for changes, returns or delivery problems.
This is the normal path when no Instant Checkout control appears. ChatGPT has helped with discovery and selection, but the purchase happens in the merchant’s system.
How Instant Checkout works when it is offered
An eligible product offer may display an Instant Checkout option. OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 announcement described the interaction this way: “If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap ‘Buy,’ confirm their order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat.” The current Help Center wording adds the important limitation that only some products and merchants are eligible.

Step 1: Check the actual offer
Do not infer eligibility from the presence of a product card, a retailer name or a recommendation. Look for the product’s Buy or Instant Checkout control. If it is missing, use the merchant link instead; there is no hidden checkout that ChatGPT can activate for you.
Step 2: Review the checkout session
For an offer that supports the feature, ChatGPT presents the order information, shipping details and payment details for review. Check the exact item, quantity, variant, delivery address, shipping method, taxes, fees and total before confirming. If any field is wrong, correct it or leave the flow and purchase through the retailer.
Step 3: Confirm the order yourself
ChatGPT does not silently authorize a purchase merely because you asked it to find an item. You must confirm the displayed order. The merchant may accept or decline the order; a confirmation screen is the point at which you authorize the submitted details.
Step 4: Let the merchant fulfill and support it
OpenAI’s announcement states that “Orders, payments, and fulfillment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems.” The Agentic Checkout specification likewise keeps the merchant’s payment processing and order systems in the loop. Shipping updates, cancellations, returns, refunds, warranty claims and customer service therefore belong with the retailer, not with ChatGPT.
OpenAI documents the technical model in its Agentic Checkout specification. The specification is for participating merchants and does not turn every retailer into an Instant Checkout seller.

Who controls each part of the transaction?
Keeping the responsibilities separate prevents a common misunderstanding: ChatGPT can mediate an offer, but it is not the universal seller of record.
- Product information: ChatGPT assembles results and comparisons from available shopping data and merchant information.
- Checkout availability: The merchant and OpenAI integration determine whether that particular offer can use Instant Checkout.
- Payment processing: The merchant retains its payment systems, subject to the checkout integration.
- Order acceptance: The merchant can accept or decline the submitted order.
- Fulfillment: The merchant ships or otherwise supplies the product.
- Returns and support: Contact the merchant for return authorization, refunds, exchanges, delivery issues and warranty service.

Availability: what is known, and what is not
Availability has changed over time, so launch announcements should not be treated as a complete current eligibility list.
The September 2025 launch snapshot
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 announcement said that ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro users in the United States could buy single items from U.S. Etsy sellers, with more than one million Shopify merchants expected to follow. The same announcement reported that more than 700 million people used ChatGPT each week. Both figures belong to that dated launch communication; neither is a current worldwide availability or usage estimate.
That announcement is useful history, not proof that every U.S. account, product or merchant still has the same access. It also does not establish eligibility in other countries or for every ChatGPT plan.

The March 2026 product-discovery update
In a March 24, 2026 announcement, OpenAI said the initial Instant Checkout version did not provide the flexibility it wanted and that merchants could use their own checkout experiences while OpenAI focused on product discovery. Current Help Center guidance nevertheless says some eligible products and merchants may show Instant Checkout, while current developer documentation describes participation as limited to approved partners.
Read these statements together: product discovery is the broadly described capability; in-chat purchase is conditional and can depend on the actual merchant integration. OpenAI does not publish a single, live matrix covering every country, plan, merchant and product. Check the offer in your own ChatGPT session.
What a missing option means
- If you see products and retailer links but no Buy or Instant Checkout control, the listing is discovery-only for that offer.
- The absence may reflect the merchant, product, region, account or current integration status; do not assume a permanent exclusion from one missing button.
- You can still follow the retailer link and complete the purchase on its website.
- If an attempted in-chat order is declined or fails, use the merchant’s normal checkout and support channels.
Check the real price and terms before paying
Shopping results are useful starting points, but OpenAI cautions that displayed commerce data can lag changes made by merchants.
Price and merchant selection
The initial displayed price typically reflects the first merchant listed and may not be the lowest. A product page may show additional merchants with different prices. Prices can come from third-party providers, and updates to price or shipping terms may not appear immediately. Open the merchant page or checkout session and compare the complete amount, not just the headline figure.

OpenAI says it does not verify reviews and ratings shown in shopping results. Treat them as information to investigate rather than as a guarantee of product quality. Read the retailer’s current listing and, where relevant, the manufacturer’s documentation.

Use this final-check list
- Confirm the exact product, model, size, color and quantity.
- Check current stock and whether the item is back-ordered or pre-order.
- Compare the full price, including taxes, service fees and shipping.
- Verify the delivery address, shipping speed and estimated arrival date.
- Read the retailer’s return window, restocking terms and refund method.
- Check warranty coverage and who handles warranty claims.
- Review the final order summary immediately before submitting payment.
These checks apply whether you leave ChatGPT for a retailer site or confirm an Instant Checkout order in the conversation.
Which shopping path should you use?
Choose discovery and retailer checkout when
- You want to compare many merchants, colors, sizes or bundles.
- The product result has no Instant Checkout option.
- You need a retailer-specific account, financing choice, subscription setting or other checkout feature that is not shown in ChatGPT.
- You prefer to handle payment, delivery tracking and returns directly on the merchant’s site.
Use Instant Checkout when
- The actual offer clearly displays Instant Checkout.
- The order summary, shipping details and payment information are correct.
- The merchant’s price and policies meet your requirements after you check them.
- You want to complete the eligible purchase without opening another site.
Neither path changes who fulfills the order: the merchant remains the party to contact for the transaction after submission.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating every recommendation as purchasable in chat
A recommendation or link proves that ChatGPT found a product, not that the seller supports Instant Checkout. Look for the checkout control on the offer itself.

The first listed merchant may not be the least expensive, and shipping can change the total. Open other merchant offers and compare delivered cost.
Mistake: relying on an old launch description
The September 2025 U.S. plan and Etsy example were a launch snapshot. Eligibility is now described conditionally and may change. Use current behavior in your account and the current Help Center guidance rather than extrapolating from that announcement.
Mistake: asking ChatGPT to resolve a merchant problem
For a missing package, refund, cancellation or warranty claim, contact the seller. ChatGPT does not replace the merchant’s order and support systems.
Bottom line
ChatGPT is both a shopping assistant and, in limited cases, a checkout interface. It can search, compare and explain products for a wide range of requests. Only an eligible product-and-merchant offer with Instant Checkout can be purchased inside the chat, and you must confirm the details. If that option is absent, follow the retailer link and finish the transaction there. Verify the final price, stock, shipping and policies every time, because the merchant—not ChatGPT—controls payment, fulfillment and after-sale support.
