Yes—but neither service has one universal capability switch. ChatGPT and Claude can search the live web, use information from earlier interactions, and call tools when those features are enabled for the specific plan, region, app, workspace, or API deployment. Their access is selective and scoped: web search is different from unrestricted browsing, memory is not a complete transcript of everything you have said, and developer tools require explicit configuration.
The practical difference is how each product exposes those abilities. ChatGPT combines web search with optional saved memory, past-chat and file context, connected apps, and a cloud-browser mode. Claude offers consumer web search and conversation memory or chat search, while its API provides configurable server tools and a developer-controlled memory tool.

Can ChatGPT browse the internet?
ChatGPT can search the web to answer questions with current information and links to relevant sources. This is useful for changing facts such as news, schedules, product availability, regulations, software releases, and prices. Search results are used as context for the response; they do not turn ChatGPT into an unrestricted crawler that can reach every page or bypass a site’s controls.

When web search is available
OpenAI documents web search across supported ChatGPT plans and apps. A plan may impose usage limits, a workplace administrator may restrict the feature, and rollout can differ by country or platform. If the search control is absent, greyed out, or unavailable after you ask for current sources, your account or workspace may not have access at that time.
How to tell whether a response used the web
- Ask a question whose answer changes frequently, such as a current event, and explicitly request a web search with source links.
- Check the response for the product’s search indicator or linked sources. A confident answer without sources may have been generated from the model’s existing knowledge instead.
- Open the cited pages and verify the publication date, geographic scope, and whether the page actually supports the claim.
Search improves freshness, not certainty. Pages can be outdated, inaccessible, biased, or misinterpreted, so treat citations as starting points for verification rather than automatic proof.
Does ChatGPT remember past conversations?
ChatGPT’s memory is selective. Depending on your account and settings, it may combine saved memories with relevant information from past chats, custom instructions, files in Library, and connected-app content. OpenAI explicitly says ChatGPT does not retain every detail from every conversation.

What “memory” can mean in practice
- Saved memories: durable preferences or facts that the system has chosen to retain for future chats.
- Past-chat context: retrieval of useful information from previous conversations rather than loading every transcript every time.
- Custom instructions: standing guidance you provide about how responses should be written or what context matters.
- Files and connected apps: information that can be brought into an answer when the relevant Library or app connection is available and permitted.
Controls and limits
Memory settings vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. You can review, correct, delete, or turn off memory where those controls are offered. Deleting a chat and deleting a saved memory are separate actions in products that support both, so check each control when removing information. A new conversation can still use custom instructions or connected sources unless you disable those separately.

What tools can ChatGPT use?
Connected apps
ChatGPT apps can search and reference content in third-party services you connect. The app connection determines what can be read, and permissions or workspace policy may restrict it. Connecting a service does not mean ChatGPT can see all of your account: the integration normally exposes only the scopes and items it is designed to provide.
Cloud-browser workflows
ChatGPT can run tasks in a cloud browser for supported workflows. That browser is isolated from your personal browser session: it does not use your existing tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or sign-ins. You may therefore need to authenticate within the task’s environment, and a site that works in your own browser may behave differently in the cloud session.
Tool calls versus ordinary text
A tool-enabled answer may retrieve data, manipulate a connected service, or continue a web task, while an ordinary answer only generates text from the context already supplied. Ask the assistant to identify which tool it used and which data source it consulted when the distinction matters. Tool availability can change mid-conversation if a workspace policy, usage limit, or connection is removed.

Claude can invoke a search tool when a question benefits from current information and ground its response in content from the live web. Anthropic also documents that web search can display images in supported conversations. As with ChatGPT, “can search” does not mean every reply automatically performs a search.

Consumer Claude conversations
When web search is enabled, ask Claude to search and provide citations or links. Inspect the cited pages for date, location, and context. If no search control or citations appear, the answer may be based on the conversation and the model’s existing knowledge instead of live pages.
Claude’s API and hosted deployments
Anthropic documents web search as a server tool for the Claude API and supported hosted deployments. An application must include the tool in its configuration and handle the standard tool-use exchange. An API key alone does not grant Claude independent access to the internet; the developer chooses which tools, domains, credentials, and data sources the application exposes.
Does Claude remember previous chats?
Claude has two related consumer features: memory and chat search. Anthropic documents these features for Claude on the web, desktop, and mobile. They can help Claude retrieve useful context from earlier conversations without treating every past message as permanently active context.

Conversation memory and chat search
Memory can preserve relevant information for future conversations, while chat search helps locate information in prior chats. Anthropic provides controls to disable memory for a chat, and citations can link back to referenced conversations. The presence of a retrieved passage or citation indicates that earlier material was used; it does not imply that Claude remembers every conversation or every line.

Developer-configured memory
The Claude platform also has a memory tool that an application configures. It participates in Anthropic’s normal tool-use loop, so the application decides when to call it, what information to store, and how to retrieve or delete that information. This developer-facing mechanism is distinct from the memory controls in Claude’s consumer apps.

Which has better internet access, memory, or tools?
There is no single winner because the products expose different surfaces. Choose based on the job and the controls you need.
Choose ChatGPT when
- You want one consumer workspace combining web search, saved memory, past-chat context, files, connected apps, and cloud-browser tasks.
- You need a browser workflow but do not want the assistant to use your personal tabs, cookies, passwords, or browsing history.
- Your work depends on retrieving information from a connected third-party service through an app integration.
Choose Claude when
- You want consumer web search with responses grounded in live pages and, where supported, search-result images.
- You need memory and searchable prior chats across web, desktop, and mobile with the option to disable memory for a conversation.
- You are building an application and want explicit control over server tools, web search, and a developer-configured memory tool.
Compare the actual account, not the brand name
Before deciding, check the exact plan, country, device, workspace policy, and usage limit you will use. A feature available in a personal desktop account may be disabled in a managed workspace or absent from a mobile rollout. API capabilities also depend on the host application, not just the underlying model.

- Web search is not private-browser access. ChatGPT’s cloud browser does not inherit personal tabs, history, passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins.
- Connections are scoped. A connected app exposes the data and actions allowed by its integration and permissions; it is not a blanket view of the entire account.
- Memory is manageable but not omniscient. Review and delete stored items where the product provides those controls, and do not assume that deleting one chat removes every saved memory derived from it.
- API tools are application-controlled. Claude’s server tools and memory tool run only within the configuration, credentials, and policies supplied by the developer.
- Availability changes. Plan limits, regional rollout, platform support, administrator settings, and feature toggles can change what the assistant can do tomorrow.
Troubleshooting when a feature is missing
The answer is not current
- Ask explicitly for a web search and request source links.
- Confirm that the search control is enabled for the conversation.
- Check whether the cited page is recent and relevant to your country or edition.
- If search remains unavailable, treat the response as non-live and verify the fact independently.
The assistant forgot something
- State the missing fact again and ask whether it can be saved as a memory.
- Check memory and custom-instruction settings separately.
- For files or services, confirm that the Library item or connection is still available and authorized.
- In an API application, inspect the tool configuration and the data store rather than assuming the model has persistent memory.
A tool cannot complete a task
- Identify whether you are using a consumer feature, connected app, cloud browser, or API tool.
- Check permissions, sign-in requirements, workspace policies, and usage limits.
- Remember that a cloud browser has no access to your personal browser session unless you authenticate within that environment.
- For Claude API integrations, verify that the developer actually declared and handles the required server or memory tool.
Bottom line
ChatGPT and Claude both have documented live-web search, selective access to prior conversation context, and tool use. ChatGPT emphasizes an integrated consumer workspace with connected apps and a separate cloud browser; Claude combines consumer search and memory features with API tools that developers configure. In either product, “can” means “when enabled and permitted,” not unlimited internet access or perfect recall. Verify the feature in the account and conversation you are using, inspect citations and permissions, and manage memory and connections deliberately.

Can either assistant see my normal browser tabs and saved passwords?
No. ChatGPT’s cloud-browser mode is separate from your personal browser and does not use your tabs, history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins. Claude’s API tools likewise see only the data and credentials an application supplies.
Will asking for a web search always make the answer accurate?
