No known carnivorous plant can eat a person. Some giant pitcher plants catch small vertebrates, but documented prey are far smaller than a human. “Eating” in this context means capturing prey, digesting it and absorbing nutrients—not hunting and swallowing animals like a movie monster.

What “eating” means for a carnivorous plant

Carnivorous plants obtain nutrients by capturing prey and digesting it, then absorbing nutrients released by that process. The International Carnivorous Plant Society explains this distinction in its overview of carnivorous plant digestion and nutrient assimilation. The word “eat” is convenient shorthand, but it does not mean plants chew or swallow prey as animals do.

Traps also differ by plant. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew describes sticky leaves, snap traps and pitfall traps: “These meat-eating plants use sticky leaves, snap traps and pitfalls to capture insects and other prey.” A Venus flytrap closes a snap trap; a pitcher plant is a pitfall into which prey can fall. Neither is a mouth capable of swallowing a person. See Kew’s explanation of carnivorous plants.

How large can their prey be?

The prey range is broader than insects, but remains far below human scale. The Botanic Gardens of the University of Bonn describes prey from microscopic organisms and insects to small vertebrates, small birds and rats. That supports the point that some carnivorous plants catch vertebrates; it does not establish that any can capture or digest a person. See the University of Bonn’s overview.

What about the giant pitcher plant Nepenthes rajah?

Nepenthes rajah is known for its very large pitchers. The Natural History Museum calls it the largest carnivorous plant, while Kew’s taxonomic entry notes that insects—especially ants—make up the majority of its prey. A size superlative does not mean the plant can eat a person: the documented prey remain small in comparison with a human.

Do pitcher plants always get nutrients by trapping animals?

No. Some giant Bornean pitcher plants receive nutrients from animal droppings rather than capturing and digesting the animal. A 2018 review reports that three large montane species—Nepenthes lowii, N. macrophylla and N. rajah—can obtain nitrogen from feces deposited by visiting tree shrews or rats. The animals visit the plants; the plants benefit from their waste. This is a different nutrient route from trapping prey, and it is not evidence that the plant eats the animal. See Givnish et al., “Carnivorous Plants: Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution” (2018).

Would a Venus flytrap eat a person?

No. A Venus flytrap uses a snap trap, not a human-sized trap. Its mechanism is distinct from the pitfall pitchers of plants such as Nepenthes rajah, and the prey described by the cited botanical sources are insects and other small organisms or animals—not people.
