Some bacteria make hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and a 2021 study proposed that this gas helps them withstand antibiotic stress. The researchers tested inhibitors of cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), an enzyme they identified as a major H2S source in the studied strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In laboratory experiments and mouse infection models, blocking CSE enhanced some antibiotic effects. These are preclinical findings, not evidence of a proven treatment for people—and a 2024 study challenged the resistance result in P. aeruginosa under its tested conditions.
What does “bacterial self-poisoning” mean?
The phrase refers to bacteria producing hydrogen sulfide, a small molecule that can be toxic at some levels but can also play roles in cellular processes. The headline uses “self-poisoning” as shorthand; it does not mean bacteria deliberately poison themselves. In the 2021 study, the proposed idea was that bacterial H2S production helps cells defend against antibiotic stress. The researchers therefore asked whether inhibiting the enzyme that makes much of this H2S could make antibiotics more effective.
The result is not a claim that all bacteria use the same pathway or that H2S production is a universal cause of inherited antibiotic resistance. The work focused on particular studied strains and experimental conditions.

What did the 2021 study test?
Shatalin and colleagues reported in their 2021 Science paper that CSE was a primary source of H2S in the studied S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. They tested small molecules that inhibit bacterial CSE alongside bactericidal antibiotics. In laboratory tests and mouse infection models, the inhibitors potentiated antibiotic activity. The authors also reported less biofilm formation and fewer persister bacteria surviving antibiotic treatment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The authors summarized their findings this way: “Our results establish bacterial H2S as a multifunctional defense factor, and CSE as a drug target for versatile antibiotic enhancers.” That conclusion describes preclinical evidence: laboratory and animal models, not a treatment demonstrated to work in people.
Resistance, tolerance and persistence are different outcomes
These terms describe related but distinct ways bacteria can survive antibiotic exposure, so an improvement in one measure does not automatically establish an improvement in another.

- Resistance usually means bacteria can grow at antibiotic concentrations that would inhibit susceptible bacteria. It is commonly assessed with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay.
- Tolerance means bacteria survive antibiotic exposure for longer without necessarily having an increased MIC. The distinction matters because cells may survive treatment without being able to grow at higher antibiotic concentrations.
- Persistence is survival by a small subpopulation of cells during antibiotic treatment; survivors can regrow after the drug is removed. A 2021 Nature Chemical Biology highlight notes that persisters can survive antibiotic exposure even when they are not resistant.
In the 2021 work, the reported reduction in persister survival and biofilm formation concerns survival during treatment and related forms of tolerance or persistence. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a demonstrated reversal of genetic resistance.
What did the 2024 study challenge?
A later study reached a different result for P. aeruginosa. In a 2024 paper in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, researchers reported that changing H2S production did not affect antibiotic resistance in their MIC assays. Their analysis of cystic-fibrosis isolates also did not support H2S protecting the bacteria from antibiotics during chronic lung infection.

This challenges a broad resistance claim for P. aeruginosa in those tested settings; it does not show that every H2S-related result is false. The studies address outcomes that can differ: organism and strain, assay, antibiotic and exposure conditions, and model. In particular, MIC-based resistance measurements are not the same as measuring treatment survival or persister cells.

CSE inhibitors remain research candidates in the evidence described here. The 2021 laboratory and mouse findings do not establish that an inhibitor is approved, available, safe, or effective as a human treatment, nor that patients should alter antibiotic use. The later P. aeruginosa results also underscore why a proposed bacterial defense target needs to be assessed in the specific organism and clinical setting where it might be used.
