Possibly—but only as an evidence and coordination tool, not as a way to create copper or eliminate a physical supply constraint. A shared ledger could make records about copper custody, inspections and transactions easier to audit. Its usefulness depends on whether those records are checked against the physical metal and independent documentation. The cited material does not establish that a copper-specific blockchain deployment has already reduced procurement delays or improved financing.
Is AI causing a copper shortage?
AI data centers add to copper demand, but they are one contributor among several. Electrification, grid expansion, the wider energy transition and defense modernization also feature in S&P Global’s January 2026 outlook. A forecast of rising demand or a possible future supply gap is not proof that AI alone is causing a present shortage.
S&P Global projects global copper demand to rise from 28 million metric tons in 2025 to 42 million metric tons in 2040, a 50% increase. It projects direct data-center demand to rise from 1.1 million metric tons to 2.5 million metric tons over the same period. The report says quantifying broader, indirect AI impacts is premature, so the data-center estimate should not be treated as a measure of all copper demand attributable to AI.

The two organizations’ outlooks use different scenarios, assumptions and definitions. Their numbers are useful as separate views of potential demand and supply; they should not be combined as if they came from one forecast.

A possible gap is not a certainty
S&P Global estimates a potential 10-million-metric-ton supply shortfall by 2040 if supply does not meaningfully expand. That is a conditional projection, not a prediction that the shortfall is inevitable or that buyers are already unable to obtain copper because of AI.
Supply also has a physical time horizon. S&P Global reports an average of 17 years from discovery to production for a copper mine. That is the report’s average, not a universal timeline for every project. A ledger cannot substitute for new production, and recording a transaction cannot make metal available sooner.

What could blockchain change in copper procurement?
A tokenized commodity arrangement can associate a digital record with a claim about physical copper or a transaction involving it. A shared ledger could make it easier for authorized participants to review and reconcile a history of records, such as inspection results, custody changes and commercial documents. That may help with auditability or support a financing process if lenders and buyers can rely on the underlying evidence.
The key distinction is between a record and the truth of what it records. A ledger can preserve an entry without proving that the copper came from the stated mine, stayed in the recorded custody chain, met a specified quality, or was inspected as claimed. If incorrect information enters the system, copying it across a ledger does not make it correct.

The evidence chain matters more than the token
A credible arrangement would have to connect the digital record to independent checks of the physical and commercial facts. The approach described in the August 26, 2026 Built In article calls for physical inspection during operating cycles, independent third-party reconciliation of commercial documents, and publicly auditable on-chain accounting. These are proposed requirements—not proof that an operating copper system already satisfies them.
- Physical inspection: establish what was inspected, when, by whom and against which lot or shipment.
- Document reconciliation: independently compare records such as inspection evidence and commercial documents rather than relying only on entries supplied by one participant.
- Custody and provenance: record how the claim follows the material through relevant handoffs, and define what happens when physical lots are split, combined or reprocessed.
- Accountability: make clear who can submit, verify and correct records, and preserve an audit trail when an error is fixed.
Without that chain, tokenization risks making a claim easier to circulate without making it more trustworthy.

What blockchain cannot solve
- It cannot add mine output. A digital representation does not produce copper, expand a mine or replace the long development path for new supply.
- It cannot verify physical reality on its own. Provenance, custody and quality still require trustworthy inspection and evidence from outside the ledger.
- It cannot guarantee faster procurement. Better records might reduce some reconciliation friction, but the available cited material does not measure a resulting reduction in delays.
- It cannot ensure financing. A lender still has to decide whether the collateral claim, evidence, legal rights and counterparties are acceptable.
The Built In article characterizes copper traceability as inconsistent and financing as fragmented. Those descriptions are the article’s assessment; the cited material does not provide a separate primary measurement of either condition. How to judge a copper-tracking proposal
For a buyer, miner, trader or lender assessing a proposed system, the useful question is not simply whether it uses blockchain. Ask whether its evidence and governance improve on the process already in place.

- Evidence quality: Are inspection and provenance claims independently verified, or merely entered by a participant?
- Physical coverage: Does the record follow the relevant material through the custody chain, including transfers and processing, or does it cover only a document or token?
- Interoperability: Can miners, processors, traders and buyers exchange records without losing meaning or creating duplicate claims?
- Governance: Who is accountable for bad data, disputes and corrections? Can the audit history show what changed and why?
- Practical benefit: Does the system improve auditability or support a financing decision that existing records and assurance processes cannot support as well?
- Cost and complexity: Are the gains worth implementation and coordination costs compared with a shared database or established independent assurance?
The available cited material does not validate a particular provider or quantify how blockchain compares with these alternatives. Those are evaluation questions, not proven advantages of a specific system.
So, can blockchain help?
It could help make well-supported copper supply-chain claims more auditable and could make some financing processes easier to assess. That outcome depends on independent physical inspection, document reconciliation, clear governance and participation across the chain. The evidence cited here does not show that a copper-specific blockchain system has measurably eased procurement bottlenecks or improved financing—and even a trustworthy ledger would not resolve a shortage of physical supply.
