No. AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not document RTMP as a supported live-ingest protocol, so FFmpeg cannot push an RTMP stream directly to a MediaPackage channel. For YouTube Live, send FFmpeg’s encoder output directly to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. If you need AWS to package and deliver an RTMP source, use AWS Elemental MediaLive as the bridge to MediaPackage.

Choose the route that matches your destination

Goal Route Why
Stream FFmpeg to YouTube Live FFmpeg → YouTube Live Control Room, using its server URL and stream key over RTMP or RTMPS YouTube’s encoder setup sends the feed directly to YouTube; MediaPackage is not required. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to get the URL and key.
Package and deliver an RTMP source through AWS FFmpeg/RTMP → MediaLive RTMP input → MediaPackage output → MediaPackage origin endpoint and downstream delivery MediaLive supports RTMP input and a MediaPackage output group. MediaPackage packages upstream content and serves it through origin endpoints; it is not an RTMP relay to YouTube. MediaLive input codec documentation and MediaPackage channel documentation describe the distinct roles.

For a new MediaPackage v2 workflow, AWS recommends MediaLive’s CMAF ingest output group. For a v1 workflow, use the documented HLS ingest path. These are packaging workflows, not a way to aim FFmpeg’s RTMP output at a MediaPackage ingest URL. AWS’s MediaLive delivery guidance covers the v2 recommendation.

Why FFmpeg RTMP cannot go straight into MediaPackage

MediaPackage’s ingest protocol depends on the product generation and selected input type. MediaPackage v2 accepts HLS or CMAF streams pushed over HTTPS. MediaPackage v1 documents HLS ingest over HTTPS/WebDAV. RTMP is not listed as a supported live input for either generation. MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and MediaPackage live supported inputs set out the supported types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A MediaPackage channel’s ingest endpoint does not make it a general-purpose RTMP server. In v2, the channel input type is set when the channel is created and is immutable; choose the supported input type that matches the upstream workflow. AWS’s channel documentation describes channel configuration.

Send FFmpeg directly to YouTube Live

Get the destination from YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live event and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for your event; do not substitute a guessed URL or key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this workflow.
  2. In FFmpeg, configure the output URL using the server URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it. RTMPS adds TLS/SSL encryption to RTMP, and YouTube recommends it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  4. Start FFmpeg, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before or during the broadcast. Stop the encoder when finished.

No single FFmpeg command is appropriate for every input file, FFmpeg build, codec setup, or YouTube event. Use the exact URL and key from your Control Room and confirm that your chosen FFmpeg build supports the required output protocol and codecs.

Encoder settings to check

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate for your intended resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance contains the current values.

Use MediaLive when AWS packaging is the goal

  1. Create an AWS Elemental MediaLive input configured for RTMP, and configure FFmpeg to publish to that MediaLive input. AWS’s codec table identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for the MediaLive RTMP input; check the table for the applicable input details: Supported codecs by input type.
  2. Configure the MediaLive channel with an output group for MediaPackage. The RTMP input is the source side; the MediaPackage output group is a separate downstream connection and protocol. See MediaLive’s supported output containers and downstream systems.
  3. For MediaPackage v2, select the CMAF ingest workflow recommended by AWS for new workflows. MediaPackage v2 also documents HLS ingest over HTTPS as a separate supported input type; do not treat CMAF as RTMP or as ordinary HLS push. For v1, use the documented HLS ingest workflow. See MediaLive delivery to MediaPackage and MediaPackage v2 supported inputs.
  4. Use the MediaPackage origin endpoint for playback delivery through your chosen downstream system. This path packages and serves content; it does not turn MediaPackage into a YouTube RTMP destination.

Common problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg cannot connect to a MediaPackage endpoint: the configured endpoint expects its selected HLS or CMAF ingest format over HTTPS, not RTMP. Send RTMP to a MediaLive RTMP input, or configure the upstream service to produce the supported MediaPackage input format.
  • YouTube does not receive the FFmpeg feed: confirm that you copied the current event’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, selected the matching RTMP/RTMPS endpoint, and kept the key intact.
  • MediaLive rejects the RTMP source: verify the input configuration and codecs. AWS documents H.264 video and AAC audio for its RTMP input; consult its codec table for the exact constraints.
  • The stream connects but has poor health or fails to start: check the codec, CBR mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, and resolution-specific bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder table. Verify the feed in Live Control Room rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg connection means YouTube is receiving a valid stream.
  • A v2 channel was created with the wrong ingest type: AWS documents the channel input type as immutable after creation. Create a channel with the intended supported input type instead of trying to retarget its endpoint as RTMP.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

A valid transport connection does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the content or that a stream meets YouTube’s policies. Before going live, confirm that you own or are licensed to use the video and audio, and review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and content rules for your account and material. Technical acceptance by an encoder or AWS service is not a copyright clearance.
