Yes—most Windows apps run on a current Windows 11 Arm PC, but not every app, game, driver, or peripheral is guaranteed to work. Arm64 applications run natively. Many programs compiled for traditional x86 or x64 processors run through Windows emulation, including the Prism emulator in Windows 11 version 24H2. The important exceptions are software and games that depend on kernel-level drivers, unsupported anti-cheat systems, virtualization components, or hardware drivers that have not been built for Windows on Arm.
Compatibility is therefore a check for the exact application, game, accessory, and Windows version you plan to use—not a simple yes-or-no property of the computer. This guide explains what runs, where emulation stops helping, and how to verify a setup before you buy or migrate.
How Windows on Arm runs traditional Windows software
A Windows 11 Arm PC can use three execution paths. The path an application takes affects compatibility, performance, and whether additional drivers are required.
| Software type | How it runs | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Arm64 application | Native Arm64 execution | Microsoft’s preferred route for performance and the fewest translation-related variables. |
| x86 (32-bit) Windows application | Windows emulation | Many Win32 programs install and run, provided they do not require an incompatible driver or system component. |
| x64 (64-bit) Windows application | Windows emulation | Generally available on Windows 11; actual behavior still depends on the application and its requirements. |
| Driver-dependent software | Requires an Arm-compatible driver or a driver included with Windows | Emulation alone cannot make an incompatible driver work. |
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ states: “Yes, you can install and run most Windows apps on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs just as you would on other Windows 11 PCs.” “Most” is important: the statement does not promise that every application, plug-in, utility, or device will work.

Native Arm64 applications
An application rebuilt for Arm64 executes directly on the processor. Microsoft identifies native Arm64 software as the best-performing option because it avoids instruction translation. If an essential application has an Arm64 edition, prefer that edition over an older x86 or x64 build.
Native support does not automatically solve every problem. An Arm64 application can still depend on a separate service, plug-in, security component, or hardware driver. Check the publisher’s requirements for the complete product, not just the main executable.
x86 and x64 emulation
Windows translates instructions from applications compiled for x86 or x64 processors so they can run on Arm hardware. This is why many familiar Windows programs install without an Arm-specific release. Microsoft’s Surface guidance describes x86 Win32 applications as commonly supported through emulation and says x64 emulation is generally available in Windows 11.
Emulation is a compatibility mechanism, not a guarantee of identical behavior. An application may install but still fail when it calls an unsupported system component, expects a particular driver, uses a copy-protection module, or has a hardware-specific plug-in. Performance can also differ from a native Arm64 build, especially in workloads that keep the processor busy for long periods.
What Prism changes in Windows 11 24H2
Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulator for emulated applications. Prism is intended to improve the way x86 and x64 software runs on Arm PCs, but it does not remove the underlying compatibility boundary. It translates application code; it does not create an Arm version of a missing kernel driver, anti-cheat module, printer component, or virtualization layer.

When evaluating a computer, confirm that it is actually running Windows 11 and identify its installed release. A result reported for Windows 11 24H2 may not apply to an older release, a different application build, or a vendor utility bundled with the program. Keep Windows updated, because emulation and driver support are delivered through the operating system as well as through application updates.
Why drivers are the main compatibility boundary
Drivers run below ordinary application code. They communicate directly with hardware or integrate into protected parts of Windows, so an x86 or x64 driver cannot simply be translated in the same way as a user-mode application. Microsoft says a required driver must be designed for the relevant Windows Arm version or be supplied as a compatible built-in Windows driver.
Software categories that commonly need drivers
- Antivirus and antimalware products that install kernel or file-system components.
- Printing and PDF software that adds printer monitors, virtual printers, or capture drivers.
- Assistive-technology tools that integrate deeply with Windows input or accessibility services.
- CD/DVD utilities that install low-level disc or filter drivers.
- Virtualization software that depends on hypervisor, networking, or virtual-device drivers.
- Specialized hardware-control utilities, capture devices, audio interfaces, and similar peripherals.
An application in one of these categories may open successfully yet lack a key feature if its driver is absent. Treat “the installer completed” and “the product is fully supported” as different outcomes.
Peripherals and accessories
Keyboards, mice, displays, storage devices, cameras, printers, scanners, docking stations, and other accessories may work through drivers built into Windows. Features controlled by a vendor utility—custom buttons, color calibration, firmware updates, biometric sensors, or advanced scanning modes—may require a separate Arm64 driver or Arm-compatible software.
For hardware you already own, find the manufacturer’s support page and search for “Windows 11 Arm,” “Windows on Arm,” or an Arm64 driver for the exact model. Do not assume that a driver listed for Windows 11 on x86/x64 PCs applies to an Arm PC.

Can Arm PCs run Windows games?
Many games can run if their game code works through x86 or x64 emulation and the game’s supporting components are compatible. The largest documented risk is anti-cheat software that installs a driver not designed for Windows 11 Arm PCs.
Recommended Free Tools
Anti-cheat drivers
Some competitive games use kernel-level anti-cheat drivers to detect prohibited software. Microsoft warns that a game or app may not work when its anti-cheat driver was not made for Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. In that situation, the game itself may be perfectly capable of running under emulation, but the anti-cheat system can block launch or prevent online play.
Check the game publisher’s current support statement for Windows 11 Arm before purchasing, installing, or depending on the title. Look for the exact game edition and launcher, because a compatibility statement for one release does not establish support for another.
Other game dependencies
Games can also rely on graphics, input, audio, copy-protection, streaming, or controller drivers. A title that starts may still have problems with a specialized controller, a capture card, a virtual-reality accessory, or a launcher component. Test the entire play path you need, including login, updates, multiplayer, and the peripherals used during play.
How to check an app, game, or peripheral before you rely on it
- Write down the exact configuration. Record the Windows edition and version, the application or game version, the launcher if one is used, and every accessory or security product involved.
- Look for a native Arm64 build. On the publisher’s download or support page, prefer an explicitly labeled Arm64 or Windows on Arm release.
- Read the publisher’s requirements. Search for Windows 11 Arm support, processor architecture notes, driver requirements, and anti-cheat limitations. A generic “Windows 11 supported” statement may refer only to x86/x64 PCs.
- Check hardware-maker support. For printers, scanners, docks, audio devices, storage tools, and other accessories, verify an Arm64 driver or confirmation that Windows’ built-in driver is supported.
- Use Works on WoA as an additional signal. Microsoft points to Works on WoA, an evolving third-party, open-source, crowdsourced compatibility database. Treat entries as useful reports rather than a guarantee; listings can change and may not match your exact version or peripherals.
- Test a non-critical installation. Install on the intended Windows 11 Arm PC before moving a production workflow. Exercise the features that matter, not just the installer and splash screen.

The installer refuses to run
Look for an Arm64 package or a newer installer. Some older setup programs contain architecture checks even when the application itself could run under emulation. If the publisher offers no Arm-compatible installer, ask its support team whether the product is supported rather than bypassing the check.
The application opens but a feature is missing
Identify the missing feature’s component. Printing, scanning, PDF creation, real-time protection, virtualization, and hardware acceleration frequently depend on drivers or services. Install the manufacturer’s Arm64 driver where one exists; otherwise, the feature may not be available on that PC.
A game starts but will not connect or launch online
Check the publisher’s anti-cheat and Windows on Arm guidance. An unsupported anti-cheat driver can block a game even when its main executable runs. A launcher update or a publisher-provided Arm-compatible anti-cheat release is required; changing emulation settings cannot supply that driver.
A peripheral works only as a basic device
Windows may provide a generic driver while the vendor utility remains unsupported. Confirm whether the maker offers an Arm64 utility and firmware tool. If not, decide whether the basic function is sufficient or choose hardware with explicit Windows 11 Arm support.

Performance is lower than expected
Confirm whether the program is running natively or through emulation and whether a native Arm64 build is available. Emulated software can be usable without matching the performance of a native build. Close unnecessary background utilities, update Windows and the application, and ask the publisher about an Arm64 roadmap if the workload is consistently slow.
How to compare an Arm PC with another Windows PC
Do not compare platforms by a single “Windows-compatible” label. Use the workflow you actually need:
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence to seek |
|---|---|---|
| Are essential applications Arm64? | Native builds avoid emulation-related performance and compatibility variables. | Publisher download page or support statement naming Arm64. |
| If not, does emulation support the exact build? | x86/x64 support is broad but not universal. | Publisher documentation, current release notes, and a hands-on test. |
| Do games use anti-cheat drivers? | Unsupported drivers can prevent launch or online play. | Game publisher’s Windows on Arm or anti-cheat support notice. |
| Do peripherals and utilities have compatible drivers? | Emulation cannot translate a missing hardware driver. | Hardware maker’s Arm64 driver or Windows 11 Arm confirmation. |
| Does the publisher support your workflow? | Support status can differ by edition, plug-in, launcher, or device. | Documentation for the exact versions and accessories you use. |
This method is more reliable than assuming that a newer processor or a “Windows 11 compatible” badge covers every component in a workflow.

Who should choose a Windows 11 Arm laptop?
An Arm laptop is a reasonable choice when your essential applications have native Arm64 releases or have documented, successful operation through emulation, and your accessories use built-in Windows drivers or published Arm64 drivers. It is a riskier choice when your work depends on specialized security software, virtualization, legacy hardware utilities, uncommon peripherals, or competitive games with kernel-level anti-cheat.
If one unsupported application is business-critical, verify that application before choosing the computer. A single incompatible driver can outweigh successful operation of dozens of ordinary programs.
What is and is not established about overall compatibility
Microsoft’s support material describes broad support for most Windows applications, native Arm64 execution, x86 and x64 emulation, Prism in Windows 11 24H2, and the driver and anti-cheat limitations above. It does not publish a single percentage for the share of all Windows apps or games that work on Arm PCs, and there is no universal game-by-game matrix. Compatibility changes as publishers release Arm64 builds, update drivers, or alter anti-cheat systems.
For that reason, the dependable answer for any particular program is the combination of the publisher’s current statement, the hardware maker’s driver information, and a test on the exact Windows 11 Arm configuration.
