Yes. Excess heat, very dry or damp air, and rapid or wide swings in temperature or relative humidity can damage archive collections. Possible results include mold, faster chemical deterioration, brittle paper or wood, warped pages, wrinkling, and cracked photographic emulsion.
There is no single temperature-and-humidity setting that suits every collection. The safe approach is to identify the materials present, keep conditions as stable as practical, measure and record them, and use format-specific preservation guidance rather than relying on a plastic box or one universal target.
Why temperature and humidity damage archives
Temperature and relative humidity work together. Relative humidity (RH) is the amount of moisture in the air compared with the maximum that air could hold at that temperature. As temperature changes, the air’s moisture capacity changes too, so a room can move into a risky RH range even when no water is added.

The National Park Service identifies temperature and moisture as environmental factors that damage collections. High RH supplies moisture for harmful chemical reactions, while warm, humid conditions can support mold and insects. Many archival materials absorb and release moisture as the surrounding air changes; repeated expansion and contraction can speed deterioration. The agency lists wrinkling paper and cracked photographic emulsion as visible examples. National Park Service archival guidance

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) likewise warns that warm, humid conditions may produce mold, warm, dry conditions can make wood- and paper-based materials more brittle, and wide fluctuations in temperature and RH can damage collections. NEDCC Preservation Leaflet 2.1
Warm and humid conditions
Heat speeds chemical reactions, and moisture enables many of those reactions. Together, warmth and dampness can accelerate aging and create conditions in which mold grows. Damp materials may also become softer and easier to deform or abrade.
Warm and dry conditions
Dry air removes moisture from hygroscopic materials such as paper, book boards, wood, and some photographic binders. Those materials can lose flexibility and become brittle. A warm, dry room is therefore not automatically safe simply because it has no visible condensation.

Rapid or wide cycling
Hygroscopic materials continually exchange moisture with the air. Each substantial change can make them expand or contract. Repeated cycles create mechanical stress even when the average reading looks acceptable. Photographs are particularly vulnerable because cycling moves moisture through layered binders and supports, producing both chemical and physical changes.
What the damage looks like in different materials
Risk depends on the format, its components, and how often the environment changes. Use the material description below to decide which guidance applies.
| Material | How temperature and RH changes can affect it | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Paper and books | High RH can contribute to mold and warping; RH below approximately 30% can also cause warping through contraction. Heat accelerates chemical aging, while dry conditions can increase brittleness. | Keep conditions stable and avoid both damp storage and very dry air. The Library of Congress says most books are best at a stable, non-fluctuating RH no higher than 55%. Library of Congress book guidance |
| Photographs | High RH can soften gelatin binders, making surfaces vulnerable to mechanical damage. Low RH can make binders shrink and crack and can curl photographic supports. Cycling promotes moisture movement and chemical and mechanical change. | Handle photographs minimally during unstable conditions and follow process-specific storage guidance. Library of Congress photograph guidance |
| Wood-based components | Warm, dry conditions can increase brittleness; moisture cycling can drive expansion and contraction. | Do not judge safety by temperature alone; record RH trends and look for dimensional change. |
| Mixed collections | Paper, photographs, parchment, leather, plastics, and other materials respond differently to the same room. | There is no universal set point. Choose a stable compromise only after identifying the most vulnerable formats, and obtain a conservator’s advice for valuable or unusual materials. |
Useful target ranges—and why they differ
Published ranges are format-specific recommendations, not guarantees. Stability matters as much as the nominal number, and a collection containing several formats may require a preservation plan rather than one simple thermostat setting.

| Guidance | Temperature | Relative humidity | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Park Service, paper archives | 60–70°F | 30–50% | General recommended range for paper archives; the agency emphasizes stability and attention to fluctuations. NPS guidance |
| Library of Congress, most books | Cool conditions at or below 70°F | 30–55%; stable and non-fluctuating, with RH no higher than 55% for most books | Book-specific advice, not a target for every archival format. Library of Congress book guidance |
| Library of Congress, photographs | Varies by photographic process and storage context | Varies depending on whether photographs are stored alone or with paper, parchment, or leather | Use the photograph leaflet’s material-specific ranges instead of applying a book or paper number. Library of Congress photograph guidance |
If your storage room cannot stay within a published range, reducing the size and speed of swings is still useful. Do not chase a precise reading with abrupt heating or cooling; sudden corrections can create the very cycling that causes stress.
How to monitor conditions correctly
A temperature-and-RH monitor or data logger lets you see whether conditions are stable, drifting, or cycling. It observes the room; it does not control the climate. The National Park Service calls for systematic measurement and recording in archive storage. The Library of Congress notes that monitoring can use a continuous system or regular human readings and written logs. Library of Congress collection-emergency guidance
- Choose the measuring point. Place the sensor near the collection, away from supply vents, exterior doors, radiators, windows, direct sunlight, and humidifiers. A reading at a desk may not represent conditions inside a cabinet or box.
- Record both values. Log temperature and RH together, with the date and time. A single RH number cannot show whether the room is stable.
- Capture trends. Use a logger for continuous data when possible, or take readings at consistent times each day. Look for overnight, weekend, seasonal, and HVAC-cycle patterns.
- Set action thresholds. Decide in advance who investigates a sustained high-RH period, a sudden drop, condensation, or equipment failure. A monitor cannot lower RH, remove heat, or dry a wet collection.
- Compare locations. If a room seems acceptable but boxes show mold or distortion, measure inside representative storage areas and at different heights. The microclimate may differ from the room average.
Are basements, attics, garages, or plastic bins safe?
The Library of Congress advises against storing valuable objects in basements, attics, and garages. These spaces commonly have poor temperature and RH control and greater exposure to leaks, floods, roof failures, and rapid outdoor changes. Library of Congress General Preservation FAQ

Polyethylene or polypropylene bags and bins can provide secondary protection from splashes or a short-lived leak, but they do not correct an unsuitable room. A sealed plastic container placed in high humidity can trap damp air and increase mold risk. Plastic is therefore a layer of water protection, not a substitute for a controlled, monitored storage environment.
When a container helps
- Use clean, stable polyethylene or polypropylene enclosures as a secondary barrier against dust and limited water exposure.
- Keep containers off floors and away from plumbing, exterior walls, and other likely leak paths.
- Leave enough space for safe handling; compression can damage fragile bindings and photographic surfaces.
When a container creates false confidence
- A bin cannot lower the temperature of its contents when the room is hot.
- It cannot remove moisture already sealed inside.
- In a damp room, closing the lid may preserve a high-RH microclimate around the collection.
What to do when conditions swing
During a sudden high-RH event
- Check whether the reading is real by comparing the monitor with a second instrument or a nearby location.
- Look for leaks, condensation, HVAC failure, or an open door to a damp area.
- Move the most vulnerable materials only if the destination has demonstrably safer, stable conditions; a hurried move between unstable rooms can add another cycle.
- Inspect for softening, surface sticking, odor, or visible mold, and document the time and conditions.
During an unusually dry or hot event
- Identify heating equipment, direct sun, or failed humidification as possible causes.
- Reduce heat and dryness gradually rather than making a large, rapid adjustment.
- Limit handling of brittle paper, boards, and photographic materials until conditions settle.
Acclimating photographs from cold storage
The National Park Service gives a photograph-specific example: place photographs in a plastic bag at room temperature for at least 24 hours before examination. This gradual thaw reduces the risk of cracking. It is not a universal procedure for every archival material; consult a conservator before adapting it to other formats. NPS archival guidance
Visible warning signs that require attention
- Mold: musty odor, fuzzy or powdery growth, or new spotting after a damp period.
- Paper distortion: wrinkling, cockling, wavy pages, or warped covers.
- Brittleness: sheets, boards, or wooden components cracking when handled normally.
- Photographic damage: curled supports, cracked emulsion, tacky or softened surfaces, or photographs sticking together.
- Repeated pattern: damage that appears after each seasonal or HVAC-related swing, even when no single reading seems extreme.
Do not force stuck photographs apart, flatten curled items, or wipe suspected mold from valuable material without a preservation plan. Isolate affected boxes from unaffected ones, limit handling, preserve the monitoring record, and obtain professional conservation advice when objects are rare, wet, moldy, or structurally unstable.

What cooler storage can—and cannot—achieve
The Library of Congress reports that conservation scientists estimated, from accelerated-aging tests, that the useful life span of paper doubles for every 10°F drop in temperature. This is a paper-specific estimate derived from laboratory aging, not a promise that every collection will last twice as long in a real room. Lowering temperature also has to be coordinated with RH control and safe acclimation; a cold, damp or rapidly changing environment can introduce different risks. Library of Congress, Scrapbooks and Albums
A practical decision checklist
- Identify formats: separate books and paper from photographs, parchment, leather, wood, and mixed-media objects.
- Measure before moving: collect at least several days of temperature and RH data in the actual storage area.
- Check for cycling: compare daytime and nighttime readings and inspect for seasonal or HVAC-related swings.
- Set a material-appropriate target: use the NPS paper range, the Library of Congress book guidance, or photographic guidance as applicable—not a generic archive number.
- Improve the room first: address leaks, sunlight, poor HVAC control, and placement near vents before buying more containers.
- Use containers as secondary protection: choose stable plastics, keep them off the floor, and never treat them as climate control.
- Document exceptions: record alarms, mold discoveries, water events, moves, and acclimation periods so future caretakers can connect damage with conditions.
- Escalate unusual cases: consult a conservator for mixed collections, historic photographs, active mold, wet materials, or any plan involving cold storage.
Bottom line
Temperature and humidity changes can damage archive collections through mold growth, accelerated chemical decay, brittleness, warping, and repeated expansion and contraction. Stable, monitored conditions are safer than chasing one universal number. Match the target to the materials, keep valuable collections out of uncontrolled basements, attics, and garages, and remember that a monitor records risk while a container only adds limited physical protection.
