Antivirus software can reduce some scam-related risks, but it cannot reliably stop phishing or every online scam. It is designed primarily to detect, block, quarantine, or remove malicious software. A phishing attack can succeed without installing anything: a convincing message may persuade you to enter a password on a fake site, reveal a one-time code, install remote-access software, or transfer money yourself.
Modern security setups can add browser reputation warnings, email-link and attachment checks, spam filtering, and download protection. Those controls are useful warnings—not guarantees. The strongest defense combines them with independent verification, prompt software updates, and multifactor authentication (MFA), preferably a phishing-resistant method.
What antivirus actually protects
Antivirus monitors files and software for known malware, suspicious behavior, and other signs of compromise. Real-time protection can inspect a download or program before it runs; scheduled or on-demand scans can find and remove threats already stored on the device. If a scam campaign delivers a malicious attachment, infected installer, or payload after you click a link, antivirus may prevent the file from executing or clean it up afterward.
That protection matters because phishing and scams sometimes serve as the delivery mechanism for ransomware, credential-stealing malware, or remote-access tools. Keeping security software enabled and updated improves the chance of recognizing those files as new signatures and behaviors are added.

Antivirus is therefore one layer of defense, not a complete fraud-prevention system. Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as protection against viruses and malware and separately recommends a modern browser to identify phishing and malware websites. The distinction is important: a malware scan cannot undo a password that was voluntarily entered into a fraudulent form.
Why a scam can succeed without malware
Phishing is social engineering. The attacker creates urgency, authority, fear, or curiosity so that the recipient takes an action. The message may direct you to a fake cloud-login page, ask for a payment, request a gift-card purchase, or claim that technical support needs remote access. No malicious file needs to reach your computer.
- Credential theft: You type a username, password, or one-time code into a look-alike page.
- Payment fraud: You approve a transfer, provide card details, or buy cryptocurrency or gift cards.
- Remote-access abuse: You install legitimate remote-control software at an impostor’s request and give the caller access.
- Conversation hijacking: A criminal impersonates a colleague, relative, supplier, or bank employee in email, text, chat, or social media.
In each case, the device may remain technically “clean” while the account or money is lost. Antivirus cannot determine with certainty that every persuasive request is fraudulent, and it cannot stop a user from authorizing a transaction.

| Layer | What it can do | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus and endpoint protection | Detect, block, quarantine, or remove malicious files and programs; monitor behavior in real time. | Prevent a person from submitting data to a fake form or sending money voluntarily. |
| Browser site-reputation protection | Warn when a page is associated with reported phishing, malicious software, or suspicious behavior. | Identify every newly created, compromised, or previously unreported fraudulent site. |
| Email and messaging filters | Reduce spam and inspect links or attachments before delivery or opening. | Recognize every well-written impersonation or scam delivered through an unfiltered channel. |
| MFA | Add a second authentication factor if a password is stolen. | Stop a user from approving a fraudulent payment or giving a scammer a valid second factor. |
| Updates | Patch vulnerabilities in the operating system, browser, apps, and security tools. | Correct a decision to trust an impostor. |
| Independent verification | Confirm whether a request is genuine through a known website, saved bookmark, statement, card, or separate contact method. | Provide technical malware detection or automatic filtering. |
Does antivirus block phishing websites?
Sometimes, but usually through a web-reputation feature rather than the antivirus engine itself. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, for example, analyzes pages for suspicious behavior and checks visited sites against a dynamic list of reported phishing and malicious-software addresses. When a match or concern is found, the browser displays a warning.

A reputation warning is valuable because it can interrupt a click before a page loads or a download begins. It is not proof that every site without a warning is safe. A fraudulent domain can be newly registered, compromised, or simply absent from the reporting lists. Attackers also use look-alike domains, shortened links, QR codes, advertisements, and pages that remain harmless until a particular visitor or time.
Do not dismiss a warning merely because the page uses a familiar logo. Close the tab and reach the organization through a route you obtained independently. If the site is genuinely needed, type the known address yourself or use a bookmark you created earlier.
Can antivirus stop scam emails and messages?
Email providers and security gateways can filter spam and inspect links and attachments. These controls complement endpoint protection because phishing may start in email, SMS, workplace chat, social media, or an online advertisement. Filtering can move obvious messages to junk, rewrite or disable dangerous links, and block known malicious files.
Filtering is less dependable when the message contains no malware and uses ordinary language. A criminal may send a plain-text request to change bank details, ask for a password, or persuade you to call a number. Messages sent through a compromised legitimate account can also look authentic to automated systems.

Before acting, inspect the complete sender address and the actual destination of a link. Familiar branding, a display name, a company signature, or a message that passes a spam filter is not independent proof of identity. Use the reporting function in your mail or messaging service when a message appears fraudulent; reporting helps the provider improve future filtering.
How to verify an unexpected request
Use this process whenever a message requests money, credentials, personal information, urgent action, or software installation:
- Pause. Do not click the supplied link, call the supplied number, open an unexpected attachment, or reply with sensitive information.
- Inspect the details. Check the sender’s full address, the link’s destination, spelling, and whether the request is unusual for that person or organization. Treat urgency and secrecy as warning signs.
- Find a separate route. Open a saved bookmark, type the organization’s known web address, or call a number printed on a bank card, bill, or statement. Do not use the contact details in the suspicious message.
- Confirm the context. For a supposed colleague, relative, supplier, or manager, ask through a different channel you already trust. A new email thread or a phone number supplied in the message is not a separate channel.
- Complete the action only after confirmation. Banks, employers, and support teams can explain legitimate procedures through their established portals or published contact points.
This procedure addresses the part of a scam that antivirus cannot: the decision to trust a request.

Enable MFA on email, financial, cloud, social, and work accounts. A stolen password is less useful when the attacker also needs another factor. CISA says phishing-resistant MFA provides the best protection against phishing among the methods in its guidance. A compatible FIDO2 security key is one physical option, although it does not filter messages or block scam websites.

Where phishing-resistant MFA is unavailable, an authenticator app is generally preferable to text-message codes, but any additional factor is better than password-only access. Never approve an unexpected sign-in prompt or read a one-time code to a caller. An attacker who controls the conversation may be trying to obtain that second factor in real time.
Keep the protective layers current
- Install operating-system, browser, application, and security-software updates promptly. Updates close vulnerabilities that malware can exploit.
- Leave real-time antivirus protection enabled unless a trusted administrator gives a specific, temporary reason to change it.
- Use a supported, up-to-date browser with its phishing and download warnings enabled.
- Secure email and messaging accounts with unique passwords and MFA so attackers have fewer opportunities to impersonate you.
- Review account sign-in alerts and transaction notifications. They can reveal misuse even when no malware is present.

If you entered a password or code
- Change the password immediately from the account’s genuine website, not from the message.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it, using a unique password for each service.
- Enable MFA and review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and recent sign-ins.
- Notify your employer or school’s IT team if the affected account is managed by them.
If you shared bank or card details or sent money
- Contact the bank, card issuer, or payment service using the number on your card or statement.
- Explain exactly what information was disclosed and when. Ask what holds, recalls, replacements, or fraud monitoring are available.
- Preserve messages, receipts, addresses, and transaction records for the institution and any report.
If you installed remote-access software for “support”
Disconnect the device from the network if you suspect ongoing access, then uninstall the requested application, run a full malware scan, apply updates, change passwords from a clean device where practical, and review sign-ins. Contact your bank if a payment was made. Managed work or school devices should be reported to the responsible IT team before you attempt major changes.

Report the scam
Use the reporting controls in the email, messaging, social, or payment service. In the United States, consumer fraud can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it can help providers disable accounts, domains, and payment routes used against other people.
The FTC said in April 2025 that email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024. This is a finding about the contact method; it is not a count of phishing attempts, a measure of financial loss, or a test of antivirus products. Treat email as a high-risk channel, while remembering that the same tactics appear in text messages, calls, ads, and social platforms.
How to judge a security product’s phishing claims
Do not treat a “web protection” or “anti-phishing” label as a promise that scams will be blocked. When comparing tools, ask practical questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Which layer is covered: malware files, email links and attachments, browser reputation, or account authentication?
- Which operating systems, browsers, mail clients, and managed-device editions are supported?
- Does the warning appear before you submit data, or only after a download begins?
- How can you report a false alarm or a missed site, and how quickly are reputation lists updated?
- What browsing, file, or telemetry data is collected, where is it processed, and how long is it retained?
- What happens when protection conflicts with a legitimate site, attachment, or business application?
No comparative consumer antivirus phishing-block rate or controlled head-to-head result is established here. A paid security suite may add useful layers, but no product makes independent verification unnecessary.
A practical daily checklist
- Pause before unexpected requests for money, passwords, codes, personal data, or software.
- Use a known bookmark or typed address instead of a message link.
- Verify unusual requests through a separate, trusted channel.
- Keep the operating system, browser, applications, and security tools updated.
- Use unique passwords and MFA, choosing phishing-resistant MFA when supported.
- Report suspicious messages and contact financial institutions immediately after payment or account exposure.
Antivirus is worth keeping enabled because it can stop or remove malware that accompanies a scam. The decisive protection against persuasion-based fraud, however, is layered security combined with a deliberate pause and independent verification.
