Yes, in supported cases. Android app shortcuts can jump directly to a feature or destination without making you navigate through the app first. For multi-step tasks, a Google Home Routine can run several supported actions from a Home-screen shortcut or an automatic trigger. Assistant and Gemini can handle a narrower set of voice or device actions, including some work from the lock screen.
There is no universal “run anything invisibly” switch. The app developer, Android version, phone manufacturer, Google account settings, country, language, permissions and connected devices determine what is available. A shortcut may still open the app’s relevant screen, and locked-device protections prevent Assistant from opening other apps until you unlock.
What “without opening an app” means on Android
Android uses the word shortcut for more than one feature. Understanding the distinction prevents false expectations:
- An app-provided shortcut is a direct entry point that the app developer supplies. It can open a particular conversation, compose screen, playlist, navigation destination or other supported feature. You do not have to open the app first and then find that feature, but the app may still appear as the destination.
- A Google Home Routine is an automation that can combine multiple supported actions. It can be started by a tap, voice command, time, sunrise or sunset, a connected-device event, presence sensing or another documented starter.
- Assistant or Gemini device assistance can perform selected commands such as changing settings or taking a screenshot. These capabilities have separate permissions and are not a general-purpose way to control every app.
In other words, Android can bypass repetitive navigation, and Google Home can coordinate supported actions, but neither guarantees that every app or every task will run entirely in the background.

Use an app’s built-in shortcut
App shortcuts are the quickest option when you want one destination or action supplied by a particular app. Google’s Android instructions apply to supported devices; some steps are documented specifically for Android 14 and newer. See Google’s guide to adding apps, shortcuts and widgets.
Check whether an app offers shortcuts
- Go to the Android Home screen.
- Touch and hold the app’s icon.
- If the developer provides shortcuts, a small list appears beside or above the icon. If no list appears, that app has not exposed a shortcut in the current launcher, account or device configuration.
The list is controlled by the app. Android cannot manufacture a shortcut for a feature the developer has not supplied, and the same app can expose different entries on different phones or versions.
Use a shortcut once
After the list appears, tap the shortcut you want. Android takes you directly to that destination or starts the supported action. This saves the intermediate taps used to open the app and locate the feature.
Put the shortcut on the Home screen
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Touch and hold the desired shortcut in the pop-up list.
- Drag it to an empty area of the Home screen and release.
- Tap the new shortcut whenever you need that action.
The exact drag behavior can vary with the launcher supplied by your phone maker, but the underlying requirement is the same: the app must publish the shortcut. If an app update removes or renames an entry, the Home-screen shortcut can stop working or change destination.
What app shortcuts cannot do
- They cannot combine unrelated actions from several apps unless the app itself supports that workflow.
- They do not automatically create a schedule, sensor trigger or smart-home sequence.
- They may still require you to authenticate, choose content or confirm a sensitive action.
- They are not guaranteed to run while the phone is locked; the destination app’s security rules still apply.
Build a Google Home Routine for several actions
Use a Routine when one tap or trigger should perform a sequence, such as adjusting lights and a thermostat, playing media, giving information or sending a supported communication. Google documents the available starters and actions in its Assistant Routines guide.
Rank #2
- SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
- COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
- CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
- NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps
Create a personal Routine
- Open the Google Home app.
- Open Routines, choose New, and select Personal.
- Add at least one starter. A starter is the event that begins the Routine.
- Add at least one action.
- Review the sequence and save it.
Personal Routines can use personal results such as your calendar events, subject to your account and Assistant settings. Household Routines are configured separately for shared home control. They can operate connected devices, but they cannot provide an individual household member’s personal calendar or reminders.
Choose a starter
Google lists these starter categories, although the combinations shown in the app depend on your home, devices and account:
- Voice command: say a phrase you configure.
- Time: run at a chosen time or on selected days.
- Sunrise or sunset: use local solar events; a home address may be required.
- Alarm dismissal: available only in supported setups.
- Connected-device event: respond to an event from a compatible device.
- Presence sensing: use supported presence information.
- Play in Google Home: start it manually from the app.
Not every starter is available for every Routine type. A connected-device or presence option requires compatible hardware and the appropriate home configuration.
Add actions
Depending on the Routine and your setup, actions can adjust connected lights, plugs, switches or thermostats; control media; provide information or reminders; handle supported communications; or send Assistant commands. Personal-data, authentication, safety and manufacturer restrictions can remove an action from the list or require confirmation. Google specifically does not offer an unlock action for safety and security reasons.
A smart plug is one possible hardware component if your goal is to switch a lamp or other device. Check that the plug is compatible with your Google Home setup; no particular model is required for the Routine concept.

Add a Routine shortcut to the Home screen
- In Google Home, open the Routine you created.
- Select Create a Home screen shortcut.
- Follow the on-screen placement steps.
- Tap the resulting Home-screen icon to run the Routine.
The shortcut starts the Routine; it does not turn an unsupported action into a supported one. If the Routine contains a device that is offline, unavailable or no longer linked, that part can fail while other actions may continue.
Run actions from a locked phone
Google Assistant on the lock screen
Assistant can provide selected responses and personal results from the lock screen when you enable Assistant responses in Google Home’s Lock screen settings. Google’s instructions are at Get Google Assistant on your Android lock screen.
Lock-screen access is intentionally limited. Google says requests to open other apps or access Google Photos require you to unlock the phone. Personal results may also require Voice Match and the personal-results setting, depending on how Assistant is activated. Therefore, a spoken lock-screen request can handle an eligible Assistant task, but it is not a way to bypass Android’s app and data protections.
Gemini device assistance
Google’s Device assistance documentation explains that the Google app hosts Gemini and its digital-assistant capabilities on Android. To use the listed device settings and quick actions, set the Google app as the default digital assistant and grant the permissions the action needs. Notification reading or replying requires notification access. Details and supported examples are documented at Control your Android mobile device and apps with Device assistance.
Examples Google documents include toggling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Flashlight or Do Not Disturb; changing volume; taking a photo or screenshot; and powering off. These are selected device actions, not arbitrary app macros. Availability can change with the assistant configuration, device software and required permissions.

Which route should you use?
| Route | What it does | How it starts | Lock-screen expectation | Main requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App shortcut | Jumps to one app-provided destination or action | Tap the icon or its Home-screen shortcut | Not guaranteed; the app may require unlocking | The app must supply the shortcut; launcher and Android support matter |
| Google Home Routine | Combines supported smart-home, media, information and Assistant actions | Tap, voice, schedule, device event, presence or another supported starter | Depends on the starter, action and account security | Google Home, a valid Routine, and compatible devices or services for device actions |
| Assistant lock-screen action | Handles selected Assistant requests and personal results | Voice or another Assistant invocation | Some responses work; opening other apps and Google Photos requires unlock | Lock-screen responses enabled; Voice Match or personal-results settings may be needed |
| Gemini device assistance | Performs selected phone settings and quick actions | Assistant request through the configured digital assistant | Varies by action and security state | Google app as default digital assistant; action-specific permissions |
There is no single manufacturer-wide feature matrix. The same Android app, Routine or assistant command can expose different choices by Android release, phone maker, country, language, account, connected-device model and security policy.
Practical examples
Open a frequent feature with one tap
If you repeatedly use a feature inside an app, try the app-icon long press first. For example, an app might expose a compose, search or media destination. If the list contains the feature, drag it to the Home screen and use that icon thereafter. If it does not, Android has no built-in way to add that app-specific entry yourself.
Run a morning smart-home sequence
Create a Personal or Household Routine according to whether it needs personal results. Add a time or voice starter, then actions such as adjusting a thermostat, switching a compatible plug and starting media. Save it, then create the Home-screen shortcut if you want a manual tap in addition to the automatic starter. Each connected device must be linked and online when the Routine runs.
Change a phone setting quickly
With Gemini device assistance configured as the default digital assistant, use a supported command such as toggling Bluetooth, changing volume or turning on the flashlight. If the command is unavailable, check the default-assistant and permission settings rather than expecting a generic app shortcut to provide it.

No shortcut list appears after a long press
- The app may not provide Android shortcuts.
- Your launcher or Android version may not expose the app’s entries in the expected way.
- Update the app and Android, then long-press the icon again.
- If no list appears, use the app’s own navigation or look for a widget; do not assume a missing shortcut indicates a phone fault.
A Home-screen Routine icon does nothing or skips an action
- Open the Routine in Google Home and confirm it still has at least one starter and one action.
- Check that the relevant account, home, service and connected device are still linked.
- Make sure the device is online and that the action is available for this Routine type.
- Review any required address, personal-results, Voice Match or other permission setting.
An assistant request fails while the phone is locked
Unlock the phone and try again. Opening another app or Google Photos is expected to require unlocking. For personal results, verify Voice Match and personal-results settings, then confirm that Assistant responses are enabled on the lock screen.

A Gemini action is unavailable
Confirm that the Google app is the default digital assistant and grant the permission named for that action. Notification reading and replying, for example, requires notification access. If the action still is not listed, it may not be supported on that device or software configuration.
Security and reliability limits
Shortcuts and Routines are convenience features, not guaranteed background workers. A tap still depends on the launcher, app and account being available; a Routine depends on its starter, cloud services, linked devices and action permissions. Changes to a password, home membership, device link or app version can alter behavior.
Google states: “Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases.” Do not use a Routine as emergency control, a guaranteed security mechanism or a substitute for a dedicated safety system. For sensitive data and actions, expect Android or the app to request authentication.

Start with an app-icon long press when you need one app feature. Build a Google Home Routine when you need several supported actions or an automatic trigger, and add its Home-screen shortcut for one-tap execution. Use lock-screen Assistant or Gemini only for the selected tasks their settings and permissions allow. The key limitation is support: Android can expose shortcuts and automations only where the app, assistant, device and security model provide them.
