Yes—Android’s Private DNS can block some ads when you configure it to use a resolver that filters ad domains. It sends DNS queries over DNS-over-TLS on Android 9 and later, but it does not route all your app traffic like a VPN, and it cannot guarantee that every ad disappears. That distinction is why I stopped relying on an ad-blocking VPN for DNS filtering—not because Private DNS is a universal replacement for a VPN.

What Android’s Private DNS setting does

Private DNS tells Android which DNS resolver to use and, on supported Android versions, protects the connection to that resolver with DNS-over-TLS. DNS translates domain names into addresses that apps can connect to. A resolver that filters known advertising or tracking domains can refuse or otherwise prevent those domains from resolving, so requests to them may fail.

That filtering operates at the domain-lookup level. It does not inspect and remove advertising content from every webpage or app, and it cannot block an ad served from the same domain as the content you want. Google’s documentation explains the encrypted DNS transport, while provider documentation describes filtering features; neither establishes that DNS filtering blocks every ad. Private DNS versus an ad-blocking VPN

The key difference is what each setting handles: Private DNS selects a resolver for DNS lookups; a VPN can route network traffic from apps through a VPN connection. Some Android VPN apps also offer per-app routing or an option to block connections that do not use the VPN. Those controls are not provided by choosing a Private DNS hostname.

Question Android Private DNS VPN app
What traffic does it handle? DNS queries sent through the system’s configured resolver. It is not a tunnel for all app traffic. Can route all app traffic or selected apps through a VPN, depending on the app and its Android configuration.
Can it filter ad domains? Yes, if the chosen resolver filters them. Filtering depends on the resolver’s rules. Some VPN apps include DNS-based filtering. Features vary by provider and mode.
Can it prevent connections outside the service? No. Private DNS is not a VPN routing or lockdown control. Android supports blocking connections that do not use an always-on VPN; if the VPN cannot connect, network access may be lost.
What happens if the service cannot be reached? With strict DNS-over-TLS, DNS resolution can fail if a secure connection cannot be established. Android may report the network as having no internet if it cannot reach the configured server. If connections outside the VPN are blocked and the VPN fails to connect, apps may lose network access.

Android’s VPN documentation describes always-on VPN, lockdown behavior, and per-app allow or disallow lists. These options can be useful when you need traffic routing or want to limit connections outside the VPN, but they also make connectivity depend on the VPN being available. Android VPN guide

How to configure Private DNS on Android

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced > Private DNS. Phone makers can move or rename this setting.
  2. Select Private DNS provider hostname.
  3. Enter the hostname supplied by the DNS provider, then save. Google’s guide uses dns.google as an example; that example is for Google Public DNS and is not an ad-blocking resolver.

Google documents this setup for Android 9 and later. The hostname is a provider’s service address, not a list of blocked ads; choose a resolver whose filtering behavior and privacy terms meet your needs. Google Public DNS setup guide

  • Filtering scope: Find out whether it filters advertising and tracking domains, how its lists are maintained, and whether you can adjust them.
  • Privacy and logs: DNS-over-TLS encrypts the connection between your device and the resolver, protecting it from passive observers on that link. The resolver still receives the queries it handles, so read its privacy policy and logging terms.
  • Compatibility: Consider whether the resolver works alongside your VPN or DNS-changing apps. On Android 9, Google documents that some third-party VPN or DNS-changer apps can override Private DNS and keep its DNS-over-TLS queries from reaching Google Public DNS; Google says that issue was fixed in Android 10. Confirm how your own device and app combination behaves.
  • Failure behavior: Strict DNS-over-TLS requires an authenticated secure connection on port 853 and fails DNS resolution if it cannot be established. Opportunistic mode may fall back to unencrypted DNS on port 53. These modes do not provide the same failure or privacy behavior.

Google Public DNS documents the distinction between strict and opportunistic DNS-over-TLS. A provider outage, network restriction, or unavailable secure connection can affect name resolution in strict mode. Google Public DNS: DNS-over-TLS

Why Private DNS may not control every app’s DNS

Android’s system setting is not a guarantee that every app uses the same DNS path. Apps can implement their own DNS behavior or use custom DNS transport choices, which may bypass the operating system’s built-in DNS transport security. Android’s security guidance recommends allowing the operating system to handle DNS where possible. Android security guidance on DNS

When Private DNS is enough—and when to keep a VPN

Private DNS may be enough if

  • Your goal is to use a resolver that filters some ad or tracking domains.
  • You do not need the VPN features of routing app traffic or blocking connections outside a VPN.
  • You have checked that your device and other network apps are not overriding the system resolver.

A VPN may still be the right tool if

  • You need all or selected app traffic routed through a VPN connection.
  • You rely on Android’s always-on VPN or lockdown behavior to block traffic that would otherwise bypass the VPN.
  • Your VPN app provides other features you actually need. For example, AdGuard describes a VPN mode that selects a DNS server to encrypt traffic and block ads, as well as SOCKS5 and integrated modes with different feature availability; that is a description of its own product, not a guarantee about VPN apps generally.
