Yes. An RTX 5070 Laptop GPU can play many games at 1440p-class resolution, usually around a 60-fps target with sensible settings. The result depends on the individual laptop’s graphics power limit (TGP), cooling, processor, memory configuration, game engine and whether you use native rendering, DLSS upscaling or frame generation.
Do not treat “RTX 5070” as a complete performance specification. NVIDIA lists both 8GB and 12GB versions, and two laptops with the same GPU name can perform differently. The most useful comparison is a review of the exact laptop at the resolution and settings you plan to use.
What 1440p gaming means on a laptop
Standard 1440p is 2560 × 1440 pixels. Many gaming laptops instead use 2560 × 1600, commonly called 1600p. A 1600p panel has a 16:10 aspect ratio and about 11% more pixels than 1440p, so a benchmark at 1600p is a demanding but useful indication of 1440p-class capability. It is not exactly the same workload: 1600p generally costs a little more performance.
The RTX 5070 Laptop GPU is therefore a sensible match for a 1440p or 1600p screen, but “can it run” has several possible meanings:

Alongside the suite of features from NVIDIA G-SYNC and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, you're guaranteed that whatever's on-screen is a distinct viewing delight.
- Playable near 60 fps: achievable in many current games with High or a mixed High/Medium preset.
- High-refresh gaming: possible in lighter or well-optimized games, but not guaranteed in demanding releases.
- Maximum settings with ray tracing: often requires DLSS, reduced settings, or both.
- Native resolution: the game renders every pixel at 2560 × 1440 or 2560 × 1600.
Frame-generation modes can make the displayed frame-rate counter much higher than the underlying rendered rate. When comparing laptops, always identify which of these cases a test represents.
Real-world RTX 5070 Laptop results at 1600p
A Tom’s Guide review of a Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 11 with an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU and 12GB of memory provides useful examples. The machine used a 2560 × 1600 display. These are results for that complete laptop, not a universal RTX 5070 average.
| Game | Resolution and preset | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baldur’s Gate III | 1600p, High | More than 90 fps | Comfortably above a 60-fps target in this test. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | 1600p, High (Laptop) | Peaks above 100 fps; generally around 90 fps | Shows that an optimized or less demanding title can use a high-refresh panel effectively. |
| Avowed | 1600p, Medium | About 59–61 fps | A demanding, poorly optimized game required Medium settings to stay near 60 fps. |
| Black Myth: Wukong | 1600p, Cinematic | 27 fps on the 12GB Legion; 22 fps on a separately tested 8GB laptop | Both systems struggled at this extreme preset. The comparison does not isolate VRAM because the laptops, CPUs, cooling and power limits were different. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1600p test in the review’s comparison table | The 12GB Legion scored 6 fps more than the separately tested 8GB system | Again, this is a whole-system comparison; the absolute frame rates and the effect of memory alone were not established. |
The same review notes that the Legion could struggle to exceed 60 fps in intense games at its maximum resolution. That is the practical boundary to plan around: 1440p-class play is realistic, while maximum presets in the heaviest games may need compromises.

| Specification | Listed value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CUDA cores | 4,608 | Indicates the shader resources available for rasterized and compute workloads. |
| Boost-clock range | 1,425–2,347 MHz | The broad range reflects laptop design and power differences; a specific model may not sustain the top of the range. |
| Memory bandwidth | 384 GB/s | Higher bandwidth helps feed the GPU at high resolutions and with large textures. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB or 12GB GDDR7 | Capacity affects how comfortably a game can keep high-resolution textures and ray-tracing data in memory. |
Check the product listing carefully. The GPU name alone does not reveal whether a laptop has 8GB or 12GB. NVIDIA lists both configurations. A Tom’s Hardware report dated April 28, 2026 described the 12GB capacity as an increase in available VRAM and said no official bandwidth improvement had been announced; its detailed specification table was explicitly unconfirmed by NVIDIA. More memory can reduce texture-related limits, but you should not assume that capacity alone guarantees a faster GPU.
TGP and cooling can change the answer
Total graphics power (TGP) is the power limit the laptop allows its GPU to use. A higher limit generally gives the chip more room to maintain clocks, provided the cooling system and firmware can dissipate the heat. Slim designs may use a lower TGP than larger performance laptops, even when both carry an RTX 5070 label.
PC Gamer’s 2026 laptop-GPU buying guide advises shoppers seeking demanding performance to look for a TGP of 115 watts or above. Treat that as buying guidance, not a frame-rate guarantee. CPU choice, dual-channel memory, fan profiles, wall-power operation and sustained temperatures also affect results. Independent testing of the exact model remains more reliable than a TGP number in isolation.
Why two RTX 5070 laptops can benchmark differently
- Power limit: a higher-TGP implementation can sustain higher performance than a restricted one.
- Cooling: heat-soaked systems may reduce clocks during long sessions.
- CPU and RAM: simulation-heavy games and high-refresh targets can become processor- or memory-limited.
- Display workload: 1600p renders more pixels than 1440p, while an external 1080p monitor reduces the load.
- Firmware and drivers: performance modes and driver versions can change benchmark outcomes.
Native 1440p, DLSS and frame generation
When a review says a game runs at 90 fps, find out how those frames were produced. Native rendering draws the game at the panel’s full resolution and is the clearest measure of raw GPU performance. DLSS renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image, often improving performance while retaining much of the detail. The quality setting and game implementation matter.

Multi Frame Generation and similar frame-generation features create additional displayed frames from rendered frames. They can make camera motion appear smoother, but they do not provide the same input responsiveness as a matching increase in natively rendered frames. They also add a small amount of latency and can show artifacts in fast motion or UI elements. For a fair laptop comparison, record three details separately:
- the game’s underlying rendered frame rate;
- the upscaler and quality mode, if enabled; and
- whether frame generation is enabled and included in the displayed FPS.
A laptop that delivers 55–65 native fps with good image quality may feel preferable to one reporting 100 generated fps from a much lower base rate, especially in competitive games.
What settings to use for a 60-fps target
Start with the game’s High preset, then adjust the settings that have the largest performance cost. The following order avoids unnecessary image-quality loss:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set the correct resolution. Use 2560 × 1440 on a 16:9 panel or 2560 × 1600 on a 16:10 panel.
- Use the laptop’s performance mode. Connect the charger and select the manufacturer’s performance or turbo profile before benchmarking.
- Enable a quality DLSS mode if native performance is below your target. Quality usually preserves more detail than Balanced or Performance.
- Reduce ray tracing first. Reflections, global illumination and shadows can consume substantial GPU time.
- Lower ultra textures only when memory is constrained. On an 8GB model, texture quality and texture streaming settings may prevent stutter in demanding games.
- Check volumetric effects and crowd density. These settings often have a noticeable cost with less obvious visual benefit than texture or geometry quality.
- Cap the frame rate. A stable cap just below the panel’s refresh rate can reduce heat and fan noise.
For a 60-Hz display, consistency matters more than chasing a brief peak. For 120-Hz or 165-Hz panels, lighter games may reach high refresh rates, but demanding titles will generally require lower settings, upscaling or a lower frame-rate target.

How to compare RTX 5070 laptops before buying
Use this checklist for each candidate model rather than comparing GPU names alone:
- Confirm the panel. Record the native resolution, aspect ratio, refresh rate and whether the screen is actually 1440p or 1600p.
- Verify VRAM. Look for an explicit 8GB or 12GB specification in the manufacturer’s technical sheet.
- Find the TGP. Check the detailed specifications or a reputable review; do not infer it from the RTX 5070 label.
- Read like-for-like benchmarks. Prefer tests at your resolution, with the same preset and ray-tracing state you expect to use.
- Separate native, upscaled and generated results. A chart that mixes these modes is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
- Check sustained performance. Look for long gaming tests, temperatures and noise rather than a single short benchmark.
- Match the CPU and memory. A fast GPU can be held back by a weaker processor or single-channel system memory in CPU-heavy games.
NVIDIA announced in January 2025 that RTX 5070 Laptop GPU systems were expected from several manufacturers beginning in April 2025, but that historical announcement does not establish current stock, pricing or the configuration of a particular listing. Verify the current specification before ordering.

The game stays below 60 fps
Confirm that the laptop is plugged in, running its performance profile and using the discrete GPU. Then check GPU utilization. Near-100% GPU utilization indicates a graphics workload; lower utilization with a busy CPU suggests a processor limit, background process or power-management issue. Reduce ray tracing, volumetrics and resolution scaling before dropping every setting to Low.

This pattern commonly points to heat or a power limit. Improve airflow by placing the laptop on a hard surface, clear blocked vents and use the system’s higher cooling profile. If clocks fall as temperatures rise, a cooler or higher-TGP design may be required for sustained performance.

Stutter or texture pop-in appears
Update the game and graphics driver, close recording and overlay tools, and check available system memory. On an 8GB GPU, lower texture quality one step and reduce ray-tracing detail. Stutter can also come from shader compilation or a slow storage device, so allow the game to complete any shader-preparation process.
The advertised FPS seems much higher than what feels responsive
Inspect whether frame generation is enabled and note the base rendered FPS. Turn it off temporarily to establish the game’s native or upscaled performance, then decide whether the smoother presentation is worth the added latency for that genre.
Verdict
An RTX 5070 Laptop GPU is capable of 1440p-class gaming and can deliver strong results in many games. The evidence also shows the limit clearly: a demanding title may need Medium settings to stay near 60 fps at 1600p, while cinematic presets with heavy ray tracing can fall well below that. Choose by the complete design—TGP, cooling, CPU, screen resolution and confirmed 8GB or 12GB VRAM—and judge benchmarks only when their rendering method and settings match your own target.
