Sometimes—but not as a universal, model-independent replacement. An Onn box may be perfectly adequate as a Plex client when your files Direct Play on that exact model and you do not need the Shield’s documented server, HDR, or lossless-audio features. The answer changes if the Shield is also your Plex Media Server, if subtitles trigger video burn-in, or if your receiver depends on Dolby TrueHD or DTS:X passthrough.
The crucial missing detail is the Onn model and hardware revision. Without an authoritative specification for that exact device, no responsible comparison can promise a particular codec, HDR mode, audio format, port, storage option, or ability to host Plex Media Server. Use the workflow below to make a format-specific decision instead of relying on the label “4K streaming box.”
Start by defining what “replace” means
A Shield can perform two separate jobs in a Plex setup. It can be the player connected to your television, and the Shield TV Pro can also run Plex Media Server for other devices. An Onn box would need to match the job you actually use, not merely open the Plex application.

Replacing the Shield as a Plex client
In a client-only setup, your media library lives on another computer, NAS, or server. The box receives the stream, decodes it, and sends video and audio over HDMI. The practical test is whether the Onn’s Plex app and hardware can play your particular combinations of container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, HDR, and subtitles without an unwanted transcode.

Replacing the Shield as a Plex Media Server
If the Shield stores or serves the library itself, a replacement must also provide a supported Plex Media Server environment, reliable storage access, and enough processing capacity for any clients that cannot Direct Play. NVIDIA documents Plex Media Server on SHIELD and its client’s ability to connect to a server elsewhere in the network in the SHIELD Plex Media Server guide. The available Onn evidence does not establish that any particular Onn model can host the server, so treat server replacement as an unverified capability until the manufacturer documents it.
How Plex decides whether playback works
Plex has three relevant delivery paths. Direct Play sends the original file because the client supports the container, video, audio, and subtitles. Direct Stream repackages compatible streams into a different container without changing the underlying video and audio. Transcoding converts one or more streams on the server. Plex explains these distinctions and the factors that select a path in Streaming Media: Direct Play and Direct Stream.
Why a file that “plays” may still strain the server
A client can display a movie while the server is doing substantial work. A video codec the client cannot decode, an audio format it cannot output, an incompatible container, or a subtitle track that must be burned into the picture can force transcoding. Subtitle burn-in is especially important: even when the video and audio are otherwise compatible, rendering text into every video frame can require a full video transcode.

Plex’s format guidance warns that support is platform-specific, so do not copy a Smart TV compatibility table and treat it as an Onn or Android TV specification. What the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro actually documents
The SHIELD TV Pro is the useful baseline because its manufacturer publishes concrete specifications. NVIDIA lists a Tegra X1+ processor, 3 GB of RAM, 4K HDR playback, Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, and passthrough for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD on the SHIELD TV Pro product page. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance measurements.
| Capability | SHIELD TV Pro documentation | What must be verified for an Onn replacement |
|---|---|---|
| 4K and HDR | 4K HDR playback; Dolby Vision and HDR10 listed by NVIDIA. | The exact Onn model’s supported resolution, HDR formats, HDMI behavior, and Plex-app support. |
| Lossless and immersive audio | Dolby TrueHD, DTS-X, and DTS-HD passthrough listed. | Whether the Onn passes your audio bitstreams through HDMI, and whether the receiver and Plex app preserve them. |
| Processor and memory | Tegra X1+ and 3 GB RAM listed. | The exact Onn model and revision; no comparable specification is established here. |
| Plex client | NVIDIA documents using Plex on SHIELD to access an existing server. | A supported Plex app for the exact Onn platform and its behavior with your files. |

SHIELD transcoding limits
Plex’s documentation for Plex Media Server on SHIELD says hardware-accelerated transcoding can encode to H.264 and can hardware-decode H.264, H.265/HEVC, and MPEG-2. Plex warns that transcoding other source formats can have reduced performance. Those statements apply to the server running on SHIELD; they are not a guarantee about direct playback in the client app. Read the details in Plex’s SHIELD server limitations article.
Why there is no blanket Onn answer
“Onn streaming box” does not identify one set of hardware. The question does not specify a model number, generation, operating-system build, or revision. The available official specification evidence therefore does not establish the following values for the device you own or plan to buy:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Supported video codecs, profiles, and maximum bit rates.
- Container support in the Plex application.
- Dolby Vision, HDR10, or other HDR modes.
- Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, DTS:X, or multichannel PCM passthrough.
- HDMI version, Ethernet availability, Wi-Fi generation, or USB behavior.
- Local storage options and whether Plex Media Server can be installed.
- Processor, memory, firmware revision, or sustained-transcoding capability.
Do not infer those capabilities from a product’s retail resolution label. Two boxes sold under a similar name can have different silicon, ports, or firmware, and a Plex app update can change behavior. Record the exact model and hardware revision from the device label, system-information screen, or an authoritative product/support page before comparing it with the Shield.

Use this decision framework before you switch
1. Identify the server arrangement
- Separate server: The Onn only needs to be a capable Plex client. This is the easiest replacement scenario.
- Shield as server: You need a documented replacement server, not just another HDMI client. The Onn must be evaluated as a server host, storage endpoint, and transcoder.
- Mixed household: If phones, browsers, or remote users also connect, count the simultaneous transcodes and remote-stream requirements rather than testing only the television.
2. Inventory the media you actually watch
Export or sample your library and note, for representative titles, the container (such as MKV or MP4), video codec and profile, resolution, frame rate, HDR format, audio codec and channel count, and subtitle type. Include the difficult files: high-bitrate 4K, HEVC, Dolby Vision or HDR10 titles, lossless audio, and subtitles that you use regularly. A box that handles ordinary 1080p H.264 does not automatically handle the rest.
3. Decide whether audio passthrough is a requirement
Trace the complete chain: box to television or AV receiver, receiver to speakers, and the Plex app’s audio setting. If you require the original Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, or DTS:X bitstream, every link must support it. The Shield Pro has manufacturer-listed passthrough for those formats; the Onn result remains unknown until the exact model’s documentation and an actual receiver test confirm it. If your television only accepts compressed formats over its return channel, a box’s theoretical passthrough support may not survive the connection.
4. Match HDR to the display
Confirm the television’s panel and input support, then check whether the box and Plex app output the same HDR format. The Shield Pro page lists Dolby Vision and HDR10, but that does not prove that every file, television mode, or receiver combination will switch correctly. For the Onn, require model-specific documentation rather than assuming that “4K” includes HDR or that one HDR format implies another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep-by-step: test an Onn as your Plex client
- Record the identity. Write down the model number, hardware revision, operating-system version, Plex app version, HDMI connection, and network connection. Keep this record with your test results.
- Install or update Plex. Use the box’s official app store, sign in to the same Plex account as your existing client, and connect to the server that contains your library. Do not assume that a sideloaded or unofficial app has the same codec behavior.
- Start with a known Direct Play file. Choose a modest 1080p title whose video, audio, and container are known to work on your current client. On the server, open the active-playback details and verify that the session is Direct Play rather than transcoding.
- Test each demanding category separately. Play a 4K HEVC file, an HDR10 or Dolby Vision file if you own one, a title with lossless audio, and files with your normal subtitle tracks. Change only one variable at a time so you can identify the cause of a failure.
- Compare subtitle states. Play the same scene with subtitles disabled, with a text-based subtitle, and with any image-based or otherwise unusual subtitle you use. Check the server session after each change; a subtitle selection can turn a direct session into a video transcode.
- Check the receiver’s signal. Confirm the receiver’s front-panel or information display reports the intended audio format and channel layout. Hearing sound is not proof that the original bitstream was passed through.
- Stress the network. Repeat the tests over the connection you will use every day. A high-bitrate file that works once may buffer when another household device is active. If the box has Ethernet, test wired and wireless separately; record link speed and stability rather than relying on the Wi-Fi icon.
- Test recovery behavior. Pause, seek, resume, switch audio tracks, and stop and restart playback. A client that opens a file but loses sync after seeking is not an equivalent replacement for your routine.
Server, storage, and network trade-offs
Running the server on a Shield keeps the library, metadata, and client in one appliance, but it also makes the box responsible for storage access and transcoding. Moving only the television client to an Onn does not remove those server duties; it simply changes the endpoint.

NVIDIA’s support guidance recommends Ethernet when SHIELD runs Plex Media Server while also using GeForce NOW at the same time. That is vendor workload guidance, not a benchmark, but it illustrates the principle: concurrent server and interactive streaming workloads benefit from a stable wired connection. See NVIDIA’s SHIELD Plex Media Server support article.
If your library is on USB storage attached to the Shield, map out how that storage will be connected after the switch. An Onn box may lack the required port, filesystem support, or always-on behavior; those details are model-specific and not established here. A separate NAS or computer can avoid making the streaming box your storage host, but it introduces another device to maintain.

Playback starts, then buffers
Check whether the server is transcoding and whether the network path can sustain the source bitrate. Reduce simultaneous streams, move the server to Ethernet, or use a client that Direct Plays the file. Lowering quality in the Plex app can stop buffering, but it deliberately invokes a conversion and may reduce HDR or audio fidelity.
Video works but audio is silent or reduced to stereo
Inspect the receiver’s reported format and the Plex audio setting. The box, HDMI path, television, and receiver must all agree on passthrough. If any component cannot accept the bitstream, choose a compatible track or let the server transcode audio. Do not treat the presence of an “original” audio track in the library as evidence that it reached the speakers unchanged.

Subtitles cause a sudden transcode
Turn subtitles off to confirm the trigger, then try a simpler text subtitle format. If the preferred subtitle requires burn-in, the server must render it into the video; that can be substantially more demanding than Direct Play. Pre-converting subtitles or selecting a client-supported track can avoid the video transcode.
HDR looks wrong or never activates
Verify the file’s HDR format, the display input’s HDR setting, the receiver’s pass-through configuration, and the box’s output mode. A 4K output setting alone does not establish HDR support, and Dolby Vision and HDR10 are separate requirements.
The replacement cannot serve other devices
This is a role mismatch, not necessarily a client playback failure. If the Shield was your Plex Media Server, keep that server, move it to a documented computer or NAS, or select hardware with explicit Plex server support. No Onn server capability is established by the generic product name.
When an Onn box is a sensible replacement
An Onn box is a reasonable candidate when all of these conditions are true:
- Your exact model is identified and has authoritative specifications.
- Your library is served by another device, so the box is not expected to host Plex Media Server.
- Your representative files Direct Play or Direct Stream in testing, including normal subtitle use.
- Your television and receiver receive the HDR and audio formats you actually require.
- The box’s network connection remains stable at your highest real-world bitrate.
In that situation, the Shield’s extra server and passthrough capabilities may have no practical value to you. The conclusion is based on your measured playback path, not on a general ranking of brands.
When keeping the Shield is safer
Keep the SHIELD TV Pro when you depend on its documented role as a Plex Media Server, its listed Dolby Vision and HDR10 output, its Dolby TrueHD/DTS-X/DTS-HD passthrough, or its known SHIELD transcoding behavior. It is also the lower-risk choice when your library contains several formats you cannot test on the Onn or when other household clients regularly require server transcoding.
Bottom-line decision
Yes, an Onn streaming box can replace a Shield as a Plex client for some households, but the evidence does not support an unconditional yes for the unnamed Onn device. Verify the exact model, run the Direct Play/Direct Stream/transcode tests against your own files, and check the complete HDR and audio chain. If you also rely on the Shield as your Plex Media Server or on its documented lossless-audio passthrough, treat the Onn as an unproven substitute until those capabilities are independently documented and demonstrated.
