It can—if “better” means the old PC delivers the performance or flexibility you need for your workload. But one build is not evidence that decade-old PCs generally outperform Synology systems: the PC’s components, the Synology model, the test conditions, and the meaning of “beats” all matter. To judge the claim fairly, compare the same work on both systems and include power use, total cost, data protection, and maintenance alongside speed.

What does “beats a Synology” mean?

A NAS can be faster in one task and less suitable overall. Before treating a performance claim as a buying recommendation, identify what was measured: file-transfer throughput, application performance, capacity, expansion flexibility, or another outcome. The title’s claim is a report about one particular build; without its components, the Synology model, workload, test method, and results, readers cannot verify the comparison or generalize it to other systems.

For a useful comparison, run the same workload under comparable conditions on both systems, explain the test setup, and distinguish measurements from personal preference. A comparison should also account for electricity and the cost of hardware, not just peak performance. A 2026 overview of DIY and appliance NAS options raises cost, power, and software as relevant comparison dimensions, but does not verify this specific result: HomeLabPicks’ DIY NAS versus Synology comparison.

Can an old PC run TrueNAS?

Repurposed hardware is a valid option, but age alone does not establish suitability. TrueNAS’s 25.04 hardware guide, last modified February 5, 2025, lists a two-core Intel 64-bit or AMD x86_64 processor, 8 GB of memory, a 16 GB SSD boot device, and two identically sized storage devices for a single pool as minimum guidance for that version. These requirements are not a performance guarantee, and they should not be applied as universal requirements for every TrueNAS version or every workload.

Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive CMR 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 5400 RPM 64MB Cache for RAID Network Attached Storage Rescue Services (ST4000VNZ06/006)
  • IronWolf internal hard drives are the ideal solution for up to 8-bay, multi-user NAS environments craving powerhouse performance
  • Store more and work faster with a NAS-optimized hard drive providing ultra-high capacity up to 16TB and cache of up to 256MB
  • Purpose built for NAS enclosures, IronWolf delivers less wear and tear, little to no noise/vibration, no lags or down time, increased file-sharing performance, and much more
  • Easily monitor the health of drives using the integrated IronWolf Health Management system and enjoy long-term reliability with 1M hours MTBF
  • Three-year limited warranty protection plan included and three year Rescue Data Recovery Services included

Check the actual machine against the documentation for the TrueNAS version you plan to install, then consider whether its components and available drive connections meet your capacity, workload, and reliability needs. A computer that boots the software may still be a poor fit for sustained use.

How should you compare the DIY build with a Synology?

Compare a specific PC running a stated software configuration with a specific Synology model and DSM version. Synology’s DSM 7.4 storage-management specifications describe managing drives, storage pools, volumes, and SSD caches. They also describe RAID technology for fault tolerance and improved performance. Those are platform capabilities, not proof that a Synology will outperform—or underperform—a particular DIY system.

Comparison area What to establish
Workload performance Which tasks were tested, how they were run, and the results for each system under comparable conditions.
Total cost Hardware and operating costs for the specific systems and period being compared; no matched cost figures are established here.
Power Idle and active consumption measured for both systems under stated conditions; no matched power measurements are established here.
Capacity and expansion Installed capacity, available drive connections, and the practical expansion options of the exact systems.
Data protection The chosen storage layout, fault-tolerance approach, and backup plan on each system. RAID is not a substitute for an independent backup.
Setup and maintenance Time and effort to configure, update, monitor, and troubleshoot each system, based on the user’s actual experience.

Keep measured results separate from judgments such as “easier to manage” or “more flexible.” Those may matter just as much to a buyer, but they are not interchangeable with throughput or other benchmark results.

What drives and boot device does a DIY NAS need?

Drive choice should follow the build’s workload and compatibility requirements. TrueNAS’s hardware guide discusses NAS drives and recording technologies, but does not establish a universally best model. Check the guide and the drive manufacturer’s specifications for the hardware and use case you actually have; do not assume that a particular drive is suitable without verifying it.

For TrueNAS 25.04, the cited guide lists a 16 GB SSD as the minimum boot device. That is a version-specific requirement, not a claim that a particular SSD has been tested or is the right choice for every build.

When is repurposing an old PC the better choice?

A DIY NAS is worth considering when the existing hardware meets the software’s requirements and the owner is willing to configure and maintain it. A dedicated appliance may suit someone who values its documented storage-management features and prefers that platform’s approach. Which is better depends on the exact systems, workload, ownership costs, and tolerance for setup and maintenance—not on age or brand alone.
