No. An LED TV is not automatically a Smart TV. “LED” describes display technology; “Smart TV” describes internet-connected software and app features. A television can be both, so check the exact model’s specifications rather than relying on the LED label.
What does “LED TV” mean?
In consumer product descriptions, “LED TV” commonly means an LED-backlit LCD television. The term identifies a display and backlighting category; it does not tell you whether the set connects to the internet or runs streaming apps.
What is a Smart TV?
A Smart TV has connected software that can provide internet access and apps. Samsung describes the idea as “TV + internet + apps = Smart TV,” while noting that a connection and content-service subscription may be required. Samsung’s Smart TV guide explains these features. LG likewise describes Smart TVs as providing internet access to streaming platforms and apps, while noting that connected features depend on a connection. LG’s Smart TV overview was published April 22, 2025.

Yes. The labels describe different characteristics, so they can apply to the same television. For example, LG’s historical LS5700 specification labels a product “LED LCD SMART TV” and lists both LED picture features and online entertainment features. That example demonstrates the overlap, not current model availability or a recommendation. LG LS5700 specification sheet.

How to check whether your LED TV is smart
- Find the exact model number. Check the label on the television or its settings, then search the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for that model.
- Look for a smart platform or operating system. Confirm that the specifications identify built-in smart features, not just LED or LCD display technology.
- Check network connectivity. Look for Wi-Fi or Ethernet support. A Smart TV’s connected features require an internet connection.
- Verify the apps you need. Check whether the specific apps are supported on that model and in your region. “Smart TV” does not guarantee every app; availability can vary by model, platform, region, and time.
- Check service requirements. Some apps or content require a separate subscription, even when the television supports them.
What if your LED TV is not smart?
An external HDMI streaming device may add app access to a TV without built-in smart features. First confirm that the television has a usable HDMI port and that the particular device is compatible with the TV. Also check whether it supports the apps you want in your region and whether those services require subscriptions. Compatibility should be verified for the exact TV and device; the term “LED” does not establish it.

If built-in streaming matters, compare platform support, network options, and compatibility with the apps you use—not simply whether a set is LED. If you are comparing picture quality, assess the exact models’ display specifications separately: “LED” alone does not establish overall picture quality or whether a television has smart features.
