Usually, yes: you can move a physical SIM card from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy if the Galaxy’s tray accepts that SIM type and your carrier supports the phone and line. An eSIM cannot be moved as a plastic card; it must be transferred or activated through a supported carrier process.
Check these four things before switching
- Is the iPhone line on a physical SIM or an eSIM? A physical SIM is removable; an eSIM is a digital profile. Some iPhone models and regional variants are eSIM-only. In the United States, iPhone 14 models and later have eSIM-only variants, but availability varies by model and region. Apple’s cellular setup guidance explains how to identify and use the available SIM options.
- Does the exact Samsung model accept that SIM type? Check the specifications or support instructions for your Galaxy model and regional variant. For example, Samsung’s instructions for certain Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold models specify a nano-SIM; that does not establish the SIM requirements for every Galaxy. Samsung’s instructions for the cited Z models show the model-specific tray and card placement.
- Will the carrier support the phone and line? A card that fits is not necessarily compatible with the network. Samsung says you can use your current SIM when it is compatible with both the network and the new phone. Give your carrier the Samsung’s exact model or variant if calls, texts, or mobile data do not work. The cited guidance does not establish a universal unlock rule for every device and carrier combination.
- If it is an eSIM, is transfer or activation supported? Support depends on the carrier, device, software and region. Check the carrier’s process before switching; a physical SIM transfer and an eSIM transfer are different procedures.
How to move a physical SIM safely
- Turn to the instructions for your exact Samsung model and locate the SIM tray. Use the supplied eject tool or the method specified by the device instructions.
- Remove the tray and place the card in the position and orientation shown for that model. Samsung’s cited Galaxy Z instructions specify a nano-SIM and show the correct placement; tray design and orientation can vary between devices.
- Reinsert the tray fully and evenly. Do not force it: a misaligned card or tray can bend or break the tray.
- Restart the Samsung or follow its setup prompts, then check for carrier service. If the phone does not recognize the card, power down if appropriate, remove and carefully reseat it, and try again. Samsung’s Galaxy A16 5G setup guidance also advises reseating a SIM that is not recognized.
- If the phone still has no service, ask the carrier to check the SIM, line and exact Samsung model before changing or replacing anything.
Apple likewise advises aligning an iPhone SIM by its notched corner when returning it to the tray. Do not guess at a SIM PIN: an incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM. If you do not know the PIN, contact the carrier. See Apple’s iPhone cellular setup instructions.
What to do if the iPhone uses eSIM
An eSIM is a digital carrier profile, so there is no card to remove and place in the Samsung. Depending on the carrier and devices, you may be able to transfer the eSIM directly or activate the Samsung through the carrier, sometimes using a QR code.

Apple’s cross-platform eSIM transfer instructions describe supported device and software combinations and participating carriers. Apple notes that after a transfer is completed, the number no longer works on the source iPhone or iPad. Samsung’s Australian instructions describe adding a plan or scanning a carrier-provided QR code at Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan on compatible Galaxy devices; menu names and availability can vary by model and market. If you do not see an eSIM transfer prompt or an eSIM option, contact the carrier before deleting or disabling the existing line. An eSIM profile cannot simply be copied like a physical SIM.
