Yes—many external DVD writers can burn both CDs and DVDs. Typical writeable media include CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW; some models also write dual-layer DVD-R DL/DVD+R DL or DVD-RAM. Support is model-specific, so check the manufacturer’s write-media specification for the exact drive and the exact blank disc you plan to use.
A product that can read or play a format does not automatically write it. The drive’s write list, your computer’s connection and power requirements, operating-system support, and disc-authoring software all affect whether a burn will work.
What an external DVD writer actually does
An external DVD writer is an optical drive in a separate enclosure. It usually connects to a computer by USB and uses a laser to record data onto compatible blank optical media. “Burning” means writing data to a recordable or rewritable disc; it is different from simply reading a pressed disc or playing a movie.
The label “DVD writer” indicates that the drive can write at least some DVD formats, but it does not define every format it supports. CD writing is common, yet it still needs to appear in the model’s specifications. Manufacturers normally separate read/playback capabilities from write-media capabilities, and the write section is the one to use when choosing blank discs.

Disc formats an external DVD writer may support
The following are the common formats you may see in a manufacturer’s write-media list. The plus and minus DVD families are separate standards, so verify each one individually.
| Format | Media behavior | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CD-R | Recordable once; existing data cannot normally be erased and replaced | That CD-R is listed for writing, not only for reading |
| CD-RW | Rewritable CD media for erasing and recording again | Explicit CD-RW write support |
| DVD-R | Recordable DVD in the minus family | DVD-R write support |
| DVD+R | Recordable DVD in the plus family | DVD+R write support |
| DVD-RW | Rewritable DVD in the minus family | DVD-RW write support |
| DVD+RW | Rewritable DVD in the plus family | DVD+RW write support |
| DVD-R DL | Recordable dual-layer DVD in the minus family | DVD-R DL specifically, if you need dual-layer capacity |
| DVD+R DL | Recordable dual-layer DVD in the plus family | DVD+R DL specifically |
| DVD-RAM | Rewritable optical format with separate compatibility requirements | Explicit DVD-RAM support; it is not universal |
| DVD-ROM, CD-ROM and audio/video/photo disc labels | Usually identify discs the drive can read or play | A corresponding write entry if you intend to create that type of disc |
CD-R versus CD-RW
CD-R is intended for a recording that remains on the disc. You can add sessions in some burning workflows, but you cannot treat a finalized CD-R as erasable storage. CD-RW can be erased and reused, provided the drive and software support the required erase and writing operation.
DVD-R versus DVD+R
DVD-R and DVD+R are both recordable DVD families, but they are not the same media type. A specification that lists DVD-R does not prove DVD+R support, and the reverse is also true. The same rule applies to DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

Dual-layer DVD media
Dual-layer discs hold more data than single-layer DVD media, but support depends on the drive and the exact family. Look for DVD-R DL and/or DVD+R DL in the write list. Do not infer dual-layer capability from ordinary DVD-R or DVD+R support.

DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM is a separate format with its own compatibility requirements. A Transcend TS8XDVDRW manual lists DVD-RAM among that model’s compatible media, illustrating why you must check the individual manual instead of assuming every external DVD writer handles it.
How to check whether a particular drive will burn your disc
- Identify the exact model number. Use the label on the enclosure or the computer’s device information. A seller’s generic title such as “external DVD writer” is not enough; different models in the same product family can have different media support.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification or manual. Search for headings such as “write,” “record,” “supported media (write),” or “recording formats.” Treat a separate “read,” “playback,” or “supported discs” list as evidence of reading only.
- Match the blank disc exactly. For a CD, check CD-R or CD-RW. For a DVD, check DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW as appropriate. If the disc says DL, match DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL; if it says DVD-RAM, look for DVD-RAM explicitly.
- Check the drive’s connection and power requirements. Confirm the required USB interface, cable arrangement and whether the drive needs one port, supplemental power or a particular operating-system environment. These requirements are product-specific; the Transcend manual, for example, states requirements for its own drive rather than for every external writer.
- Confirm the software workflow. Drive hardware may be able to write a format while the installed application cannot author every disc type. Check that your software can create the intended data disc, audio CD, video disc or photo disc.
- Verify the result after writing. Enable the burning application’s verification option when available, or test the finished disc in a separate compatible drive. A successful write operation is not the same as confirming that every target device can read the disc.
Examples from published manufacturer specifications
Manufacturer listings show why checking the model matters:
| Model | Write formats listed | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Verbatim External Slimline CD/DVD Writer (98938) | CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R/DVD+R double layer, DVD-RW and DVD+RW | The listing describes the unit as reading and writing CDs and DVDs; use its write-media section for blank-disc compatibility. |
| ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U | CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL | The product page gives different maximum write speeds by format, so speed is not one universal figure for the drive. |
| Transcend TS8XDVDRW | CD-R/RW, DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±R DL and DVD-RAM | The listed operating-system and hardware requirements apply to that model and should not be treated as a universal guarantee. |
These examples demonstrate the range of support available. They do not establish that every external DVD writer supports all of the formats in the table, nor do they rank one model above another.

Read support, playback support and write support are different
Manufacturers often publish several lists for one drive. A “supported media” or “playback mode” section may include CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, movie discs or other formats the laser can read. A “write media” section identifies blank media the drive can record. Only the latter answers whether you can burn a particular disc.

- Ultra slim portable DVD writer drive(14 millimeter height)
- USB 2.0 interface ( USB 3.0 Compatible, upto 480Mbits/s)
- Max 8x DVDR write speed / Max 24x CD write speed
- Video memory requirement : 64 MB or higher (128 MB recommended)
- With Cyberlink Software, support M Disc
For example, seeing DVD-ROM in a specification means the drive can read a DVD-ROM; it does not mean you can buy a blank DVD-ROM and record onto it. Likewise, a drive that plays an audio CD may or may not write CD-R or CD-RW. Always match the blank disc’s label to an explicit write entry.
Compatibility factors beyond the disc label
USB connection and cable setup
External writers depend on the host connection for data and, in many designs, power. A cable, adapter or hub that does not meet the model’s requirements can cause disconnects, failed burns or a drive that is not detected. Follow the exact port and cable guidance in the manual, especially when the enclosure uses a separate power lead.
Operating-system support
The drive may be physically capable of writing a disc yet require a supported operating system, driver or application. Check the model documentation for the operating systems and hardware environments it supports. Do not transfer the requirements from one model to another.
Burning and authoring software
Writing a data disc, an audio CD or a video DVD involves different software functions. The drive supplies the optical writing hardware; the application creates the file system or authoring structure. Confirm that your software supports the project you are trying to make and the media type inserted.

Write speeds
Maximum speed is format-specific. The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U specification lists different maximum write speeds for CD-R, CD-RW, DVD±R, DVD±RW and dual-layer media. When comparing drives, read the speed beside the exact format you use rather than relying on one headline speed.

Buying by the words “DVD writer” alone
Symptom: The drive accepts a disc but the software reports that the media is unsupported. Fix: Recheck the exact model’s write-media list and buy a format that appears there.
Confusing plus and minus media
Symptom: DVD-R works, but DVD+R or a rewritable variant does not. Fix: Treat DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW as separate checks; support for one does not prove support for the others.

Assuming dual-layer support
Symptom: A DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL disc is rejected even though ordinary DVD recording works. Fix: Verify the matching DL entry, including the plus or minus family.

Assuming DVD-RAM support
Symptom: DVD-RAM media is not recognized. Fix: Look for an explicit DVD-RAM entry in the manual. If it is absent, choose a format the manufacturer lists for writing.
Ignoring host requirements
Symptom: The drive disappears during a burn or never appears in the operating system. Fix: Use the specified USB port and cable, meet the model’s power requirements, and confirm operating-system compatibility before troubleshooting the blank disc.
Expecting hardware to author every disc type
Symptom: The drive supports the media, but the application cannot create the desired audio, video or photo disc. Fix: Use software with the required authoring capability, or choose a simpler data-disc workflow if that meets your goal.
A practical buying and setup checklist
- Write down the exact model number before purchasing blank media.
- Confirm CD-R and/or CD-RW support if you need to burn CDs.
- Confirm each DVD family you plan to use: DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW.
- Check DVD-R DL and/or DVD+R DL separately for dual-layer projects.
- Check DVD-RAM explicitly if that format is part of your workflow.
- Compare maximum write speeds by format when speed matters.
- Match USB, cable, power and operating-system requirements to your computer.
- Confirm that your burning software can create the intended data, audio, video or photo disc.
- Use the manufacturer’s write-media list rather than a retailer’s abbreviated description.
Bottom line for your specific disc
If the exact external DVD writer lists the blank format under its write or record specifications, it can generally burn that disc when the computer, power connection, operating system and software also meet the documented requirements. CD-R and CD-RW support is common on models that write CDs and DVDs, while DVD-R/DVD+R, DVD-RW/DVD+RW, dual-layer media and DVD-RAM must be checked individually. Reading or playback support alone is never enough evidence that a drive can burn the format.
